English 7 Mrs. Kriegler and Mrs. Turner The Outsiders Poetry Project In chapter 5 of The Outsiders you read a famous poem by Robert Frost. In class we discussed the surface meaning of the poem—the idea that nothing gold can stay—as well as the subtext of the poem, which contains a theme for the book. And that’s the cool thing about poetry: that it can communicate to us on different levels. We’d like you to write a poem about yourself in the style of the Robert Frost poem. Its theme, or subtext, must be one of the themes from The Outsiders (listed below). 1. Your poem can rhyme or not rhyme, it’s up to you. 2. The poem should be at least 10 lines and no longer than 25 lines. You should have around 10 words per line. 3. The poem must have a title. 4. Please type the poem. You may illustrate the typed page if you like, but if you use images from the internet, please cite them. You do not have to illustrate the poem: it’s just an option for those of you who are visual learners! 5. The poem must contain a theme from The Outsiders. Here are your choices: a. Innocence vs. experience b. Individuality vs. group identity c. Appearance vs. reality d. Responsibility vs. desire We’d like you to highlight (with a highlighter) the line in which your theme appears. 6. This poem is due Thursday, 10.1 (BLUE) and Friday, 10.2 (GOLD). Grading You will be graded on the following criteria: 1. Poem is appropriate length 2. Poem is titled 3. Poem is typed 4. Poem contains a theme 5. Theme is highlighted 6. Subject matter and theme are well-suited 3 pts 2 pts 3 pts 5 pts 2 pts 5 pts
