Overview
Compaq provides its Authorized Resellers with tested and recommended hardware and software server
configurations, including part numbers for the Compaq ProLiant E-Commerce Servers.
Compaq markets the ProLiant E-Commerce Servers to customers as a family of solutions, which enable customers
to confidently deploy an electronic commerce storefront. Compaq recommends that customers contact their Compaq
Authorized Reseller to determine the optimum configuration most appropriate for their environment.
Recommended configurations are being provided only to Compaq Authorized Resellers to simplify customers’
planning and deployment of electronic commerce storefronts.
Description
The Compaq ProLiant E-Commerce Servers enable merchants, Web developers and ISPs to confidently plan and
deploy an electronic commerce website.
The Compaq ProLiant E-Commerce Servers’ recommended hardware and software configurations can easily be
used to create a proven, reliable electronic commerce storefront for merchant sites. Compaq ProLiant E-Commerce
Servers utilize Microsoft’s Commerce Server as the platform for building a virtual storefront.
Two servers are recommended to meet the needs of merchants – the ProLiant 1850R and the ProLiant 6500.
• The ProLiant 1850R E-Commerce Server is ideally suited for use as a dedicated storefront server in high serverdensity merchant and ISP environments. The 3U form factor, state-of-the-art processor, memory, bus
architecture, and enhanced serviceability features provide a high-performance rack-server platform for virtual
storefronts.
• The ProLiant 6500 E-Commerce Server provides a high-capacity and highly available single server platform. The
ability to hot plug store, expand up to four processors, and expand up to 4 GB of memory enables a merchant to
deploy and expand a Web-based storefront within a single server.

electronic commerce website.
Compaq ProLiant E-Commerce Servers incorporate the learning of extensive testing in Compaq's engineering labs
and customer sites. As a result, merchants can quickly and confidently plan and deploy their Web-based storefronts.
Using industry-standard technology assures investment protection as electronic commerce sites grow in traffic and
complexity. Simplifying the storefront deployment results in a faster time to generate revenue with their storefronts,
as well as a faster Return on Investment (ROI) for merchants.
Microsoft Site Server 3.0, Commerce Edition
Microsoft Site Server 3.0, Commerce Edition is a comprehensive website environment for developing, deploying and
managing an electronic commerce site. Microsoft Commerce Server, part of Microsoft Site Server 3.0, Commerce
Edition, includes tools for storefront creation, catalog creation, usage analysis, and application development
including the ability to extend the storefront with third-party components. The Order Processing Pipeline in
Commerce Server allows for add-on applications supporting specific functionality, such as tax calculations, credit
card payment processing and shipping calculations.
SQL Server
SQL Server acts as a repository for the merchant’s product catalog, enabling dynamic creation of Web pages.

Built-in Management
All Compaq servers feature Compaq Insight Manager, a comprehensive management tool that facilitates greater
application availability by monitoring the operation of Compaq servers and proactively notifying administrators of
impending hardware failures. Compaq Insight Manager gives administrators real control through its intuitive visual
interface, comprehensive fault and configuration management, and industry-leading remote management. ProLiant
servers also include the Integrated Remote Console, which allows out-of-band management capabilities such as
remote console and remote reset, independent of the state of the operating system. Carbon Copy 32 enables
Windows NT based remote management for efficient operations management.

CompaqCare provides a wide range of service offerings, including a three-year limited warranty1 fully supported by a
worldwide network of resellers and service providers, lifetime toll-free 7 x 24 hardware technical phone support, PreFailure Warranty coverage of hard drives, memory and Intel Pentium Pro and Pentium II processors and Compaq
Service and Support Programs available on a worldwide basis. Software installation and support is not provided by
Compaq. Resellers should contact the software manufacturer for additional support.
