Unit 2 focuses on addition facts, addition strategies such as doubles, doubles plus one, and using the number line to find sums. Unit 3 looks at subtraction and fact families. Unit 4 deals with graphs. Unit 5 focuses on place value. Unit 6 will be focusing on patterns and ordinal numbers. Unit 7 and 8 will explore plane and solid shapes. Unit 9 will touch on fractions. Unit 10 and 11 focus on regrouping with addition and adding three numbers. Unit 12 and 13 deals with regrouping with subtraction and estimating differences. Unit 14,15, 16 discusses counting and using money, time, and the calender. Unit 17 and 18 will look at measurement and temperature. Unit 19 will focus on multiplication and division. Unit 20, 21, and 22 will look at numbers through 1,000 adding and subtracting three digit numbers. Reading with Spelling (Student book-Reading Book and Practice Book/ Publisher: Houghton Mifflin) We will be incorporating a reading series including spelling words that go along with the stories. We will focus on reading strategies with emphasis on comprehension. Our themes will include the following: Nature Walk, Around Town, Amazing Animals, Family Time, and Talent Show. A corresponding practice book will reinforce vocabulary, spelling, comprehension, writing, and grammar skills. Each theme will be followed up with a reading test that will include phonics, reading comprehension, spelling, grammar, and following directions. Phonics (Student book- Phonics/ Publisher: Modern Curriculum Press) The concepts that will be taught in Phonics include the following: beginning, middle, and ending consonant sounds, blends, short and long vowel sounds, rcontrolled vowel sounds (ar, er, ir, or, ur) and y as a vowel, vowel digraphs, and dipthongs. We will also learn more about syllables, compound words, contractions, plurals, prefixes, suffixes, synonyms, antonyms, and homonyms. Along with identifying these concepts, the students will also be able to read and write the skills taught, Social Studies We will be focusing our Social Studies themes around the holidays. Important people in the world/American history will be covered in Weekly Readers. Our main themes will be Native Americans, Immigration, Geography, and American Government Science (Student book- Science/Publisher: Harcourt) Unit A-Living Things Grow and Change Unit B-Home for Living Things Unit C-Exploring Earth’s Surface Unit D-Space and Weather Unit E-Exploring Matter Unit F-Energy in Motion Handwriting (Zaner Bloser) The review of manuscript (printing) and the introduction of cursive will be taught this year. A corresponding workbook will reinforce the formation of writing.
