A huge thank you and congratulations to everyone who helped us raise over £1000, on the Nepalese fundraising day! On Thursday 22nd October, Coombe Dean held a charity fundraising day, in order to raise money for the Nepal Earthquake Fund. With many fundraising activities which took place throughout the day and the mufti day, the grand total raised was a massive £1090.09! A particular well done to Tia C, who took on the challenge of a sponsored silence and raised lots of money, Kushla M, who won the ‘Name the Teddy’ competition, Connor B, for his huge support and enthusiasm for ‘Sponge the Teachers’, all of the teachers who were sponged, all of the ‘Where’s Wally’ finders (too many winners to name) and the sixth form charity committee! Thank you to everyone who took part in the day and the money raised will be very much appreciated by the Thame School and the surrounding area, where many Post 16 students visited just days before the earthquake struck earlier this year. Jamie G & Ania S The Senior Challenge is aimed at all 16-19 year olds studying mathematics. The challenge involves answering 25 multiple choice questions in 90 minutes and is sat in school under exam conditions. 14 Coombe Dean students from across Years 12 and 13 took part in the challenge, trying to answer as many questions correctly as possible, gaining 4 points for a correct answer but losing 1 mark for any incorrect answers. (No allowance for lucky guesses!) The top 60% of students nationally receive a gold, silver or bronze certificate in the ratio 1:2:3 and each school receives a Best in School certificate. Top performing students are then invited to take part in follow-on rounds and the very best can represent their country in the International Mathematical Olympiad. Around 1000 top scorers in the Senior Challenge are invited to take part in the British Mathematical Olympiad Round 1 and around 2000 are invited to take part in the Senior Kangaroo. Here are a few examples of the challenges faced by participants: Q: The numbers 5,6,7,8,9,10 are to be placed, one in each of the circles in the diagram, so that the sum of the numbers in each pair of touching circles is a prime number. The number 5 is placed in the top circle. What number is placed in the shaded circle? A 6 Q: B 7 C 8 D 9 E 10 The diagram shows eight circles of different sizes. The circles are arranged in concentric pairs so that the centres form a square. Each larger circle touches one other larger circle and two smaller circles. The larger circles have radius of 1. What is the radius of each of the smaller circles? A B C D E Results should be in before the end of November, so watch this space! Best of luck to all participating students. B Kellham My vision for Coombe Dean School is, “Success built around positive relationships.” To help make that a reality I feel it is very important that staff, students and parents all have opportunity to speak to me, both about what is going well across the school, and also those areas in which we could do even better. I would like to invite parents/carers, who have something that they would like to discuss with me face to face, to make a 15 minute appointment at a ‘Meet the Headteacher’ afternoon on Wednesday 25 November, between 2.15pm and 5.30pm. Places will be allocated on a first come first served basis but, should there be more parents wishing to meet me than I can accommodate on this occasion, I will organise further dates in the future. If you would like to take up this offer then please contact Kelly Hill (khill@coombedean.co.uk) giving the name of your child, what it is you wish to discuss (so that I can do any necessary preparation to facilitate the conversation) and your preferred time.
