Local Scholarships…
Bishop’s Christian Service Award
The Bishop’s Christian Service Award provides four $1000 scholarship to graduating seniors who, due to
geographical location, do not have the opportunity to attend one of their four Catholic high schools. The purpose of
the award is to recognize those students who, by their lifestyle as young Catholics, have given example that they
believe in and are making Catholic values a part of their lives. To be considered for the award, students must be
registered in a Catholic parish and participate in the weekly Sunday Eucharist. Applications are available in the
guidance office. Deadline: April 20, 2009.
Community Financial
This scholarship is available to students who have their own account at Community Financial. Students must have
good grades and be active in their community. Directions for applying are available in the guidance office. Deadline:
March 6, 2009.
Community Foundation for Northeast Michigan
There are several scholarships through this organization for students who reside in Montmorency County. Each
scholarship has different criteria. Please pick up a list of scholarships and an application from the guidance office.
Deadline: April 1, 2009.
Eastern Star Scholarship
The Order of Eastern Star, Atlanta Chapter, awards two scholarships each year, one for an Atlanta High School
senior and one for a Johannesburg-Lewiston High School senior. Applicants must be attending an accredited college
or vocational program in Michigan in the fall of 2009. There is no minimum GPA to apply. Judging is based on the
desire a student has to attend college and succeed. Final determination will be made based on the 500-word essay
that the applicant must write. Applications are available in the guidance office. Deadline: April 1, 2009.
Edelweiss Garden Club Scholarship
This scholarship is for $750, given by the Edelweiss Garden Club. They are looking for a student with a 2.5 to 4.0
grade point average who is planning to attend college in the fall of 2009. Applicants must be planning to major in one
of the following fields of study: Agriculture Education, Horticulture, Floriculture, Landscape Design, Golf Course
Management, Botany, Biology, Plant Pathology/Science, Forestry, Agronomy, Environmental Concerns,
Environmental Conservation, City (Rural and Urban) Planning, Wildlife Science, Habitat or Forest/Systems Ecology,
or Land Management. Applications are available in the guidance office. Deadline: May 1, 2009.
Garland Charity Classic Scholarship
This scholarship program was established by Garland through the “Garland Charity Classic” as a long termcommitment to the communities and hospitality industry to support the development of skilled professionals. There
will be a minimum of 10 scholarships of $1000 each given to students from the Johannesburg-Lewiston, Atlanta,
Fairview, Hillman and Mio areas (with special consideration given to graduates of JLHS.) Applicants must be a high
school graduate and member of the respective community as well as provide evidence of enrollment in a university,
college or community college for the 2009-10 school year. Course of study is not restricted, however, special
consideration may be given to those enrolled in a hospitality, culinary management or golf/ski management program.
Applications will be evaluated based on industry-related work experience, academic record/educational qualifications,
community and extracurricular activities, and personal attributes, including career goals. Applications may be picked
up from the guidance office. Deadline: April 1, 2009.
Johannesburg-Lewiston Education Association Scholarship
The teaching staff of Johannesburg-Lewiston Area Schools gives this scholarship to one senior per year. To be
eligible for this award, students must have a GPA of 2.5 or higher and be pursuing higher education in a certified
college, business, trade or technical school. Applications are available in the guidance office. Deadline: March 30,
2009.

Kiwanis Club of Gaylord Foundation
The Kiwanis Club in Gaylord offers these scholarships to students who have demonstrated leadership and have
community service experience. Other criterion includes grade point average, ACT scores, work experience and
extracurricular activities. Applications are available in the guidance office. Deadline: March 20, 2009.
Lewiston Garden Club
The Lewiston Garden Club offers this scholarship of $500 to any JLHS senior pursuing a post-secondary education.
Applications are available in the guidance office. Deadline: May 1, 2009.
Masonic Foundation of Michigan Scholarship
The Michigan Masonic Charitable Foundation offers this scholarship. Applicants must write a 250 to 300-word essay
describing their vocational or professional goals and relate how past, present and future activities make the
accomplishment of these goals probable. Students must obtain 2 letters of recommendation from school personnel
as well as 2 letter of endorsement from non-school personnel. After completing the application, the local Masonic
Lodge must endorse the application. Deadline: March 15, 2009.
Michigan Association of Retired School Personnel
MARSP will offer a scholarship for pursuing a higher education in the amount of $200 in each public school in Otsego
County. To qualify, applicants must be a student at a school in Otsego County. Deadline: May 1, 2009.
National Wild Turkey Federation’s Academic Scholarship
This scholarship is available to graduating seniors who are pursuing a degree at an accredited institution of higher
learning and support the preservation of the hunting tradition and actively participate in hunting sports. The selection
committee is looking for students who are involved in school activities and demonstrate both, leadership and
community involvement. Applicants must complete the application, get three letters of reference, and write a brief
autobiography and essay. Applications are available from the guidance office. Deadline: March 1, 2009.
Northland Sportsmen’s Club Ladies Auxiliary
This scholarship is intended to provide financial assistance to a graduating female attending high school in Otsego
County. Applicants must be accepted by an accredited post-secondary institution and provide evidence of having met
the goals of the Northland Sportsmen’s Club (preservation of the environment, upholding the game laws of the state,
safe and proper use of firearms, outstanding citizenship and true sportsmanship). Applicants must also have a GPA
of 2.5 or higher. Priority will be given to applicants who pursue a career in conservation, law enforcement, or culinary
arts. Applications are available in the guidance office. Deadline: March 31, 2009.
Otsego County Community Foundation
There are several scholarships through this organization for students who attend school in Otsego County. Each
scholarship has different criteria. Please pick up a list of scholarships and an application from the guidance office.
Deadline: March 20, 2009.
Otsego County Farm Bureau Scholarship
Special preference for this scholarship is given to Farm Bureau members. Students must have a 2.0 GPA and must
maintain a 2.0 GPA in college. One half of the grant is given during the first semester with the second half given after
the Otsego County Farm Bureau Scholarship Selection Committee receives a transcript of your grades. Applications
are available in the guidance office or online at www.michiganfarmbureau/counties/index/69. Deadline: April 15,
2009.
Otsego Memorial Hospital Auxiliary Scholarship
OMH Auxiliary is offering a $500 scholarship to a graduating senior from a high school in Otsego County. To be
eligible, students must be pursuing an education in a health care field and a resident of the primary area serviced by
OMH. Deadline: April 30, 2009.
AVBAF Sandra Miles Memorial College Scholarship
Applicants for this scholarship must be a graduating senior or existing college student accepted to or enrolled in a
college or university offering studies in music, art, or the performing arts and must have declared one of those three
fields of study as their major or minor. Preference may be given to those who have attended previous Nor-east’r
Music & Art Festivals and other AVNAF evens and who have applied for or received Carrick Awards in the past. For

State Scholarships…
Alpena Community College
Alpena Community College offers a variety of scholarships for students who are planning to attend there in the fall of
2009. Students must have applied for college admission before applying for these scholarships. Scholarships range
in criteria. Students must fill out the FAFSA in order to qualify for some of these awards. Fortunately, there is one
application to complete and you can apply for as many scholarships as you qualify all on the same form. Applications
are available in the guidance office. Deadline: April 6, 2009.
American Legion/Michigan Auxiliary
American Legion offers many different scholarships for graduating dependents of veterans. See a description of the
individual scholarships below. With the exception of the Oratorical Contest, all of these scholarships require that
students are a Michigan resident and a son, daughter or grandchild of a veteran. Proof of parent or grandparent’s
military service record is required. Students must be attending a Michigan college or university. Other criterion may
be listed under the specific scholarships. Applications are available online at www.michiganlegion.org.
Medical Career Scholarship
This scholarship is for students pursuing a medical career. Applicants should be in the top quarter of their class.
Applications are available online at www.michalaux.org. Deadline: March 15, 2009.
Memorial Scholarship
This scholarship is for daughters, granddaughters or great-granddaughters or step of the afore-mentioned, of any
honorably discharged or deceased veterans. Students must be age 16-21. Applications are online at
www.michalaux.org. Deadline: March 15, 2009.
National President’s Scholarship
This scholarship is available to graduating seniors whose parent, step-parent, or grandparent is a veteran. Applicants
must complete fifty hours of volunteer service and complete an application. Applications are online at
www.michalaux.org. Deadline: March 1, 2009.
COPAS Scholarship
The Council of Petroleum Accountants Societies is offering 2 $500 scholarships to seniors who are going to college to
major in accounting or petroleum technology. Candidates must have a GPA or 3.0 or higher. For more information,
please visit www.copas.org. Applications are available in the guidance office. Deadline: March 31, 2009.
Current Surfaces
This scholarship is available to students who have participated in track for three or more years. Students must have a
2.0 GPA or higher and demonstrate qualities such as initiative, honesty, integrity and community service as well as a
strong work ethic. Applications are available online at www.currentsurfaces.com. Deadline: April 24, 2009.
Ferris State University
FIRST Robotics Competition or FIRST Vex Challenge Scholarship
This is a merit-based scholarship to recognize the achievements of the FIRST Robotics Competition and FIRST Vex
Challenge participants. This scholarship will provide up to three $1000 scholarships that can be utilized in any
program of study. Applicants must apply to FSU by April and provide documentation confirming participation in the
FIRST Robotics Competition or the FIRST Vex Challenge. Deadline: May 1, 2009.
FSU Alumni and Friends Scholarship
This scholarship is available to incoming freshmen with a 3.0 or higher GPA. Students must be enrolled as full time
students at FSU for the fall of 2009. Deadline: May 1, 2009.
O’Brien-QUY Endowment Scholarship
This scholarship is for incoming freshmen, enrolled full-time at FSU in one of the following programs: College of Arts &
Science – Biotechnology or Political Science, College of Business – Accountancy, or College of Education –
Elementary & Secondary Teacher Education. Students must have earned a 3.0 GPA or above in high school.
Financial need is also considered, based on the FAFSA. Deadline: May 1, 2009.
Kelso Battle Scholarship
Applicants for this scholarship must have a minimum GPA of 3.5 and an ACT composite score of 26 or above.
Applicants must be enrolled in an eligible program, which are listed on the application. Deadline: May 1, 2009.
Academic Opportunity Scholarship
Applicants for this scholarship must have a minimum high school GPA of 3.0. Preference is given to minority
students. Deadline: May 1, 2009.

Kirtland Community College
Kirtland Community College offers two scholarships for graduating seniors; the GI Stewart Scholarship, for students
with a GPA of 3.5 or higher and the President’s Scholarship, for students with a GPA of 3.0-3.49. Applications are
available in the guidance office or online at www.kirtland.edu/finaid/scholarships.htm. Deadline: April 24, 2009.
Michigan Oil and Gas Producers Education Foundation
Applicants must be high school seniors and have a GPA of 3.0 or higher. They must also be accepted for enrollment
at a Michigan university or community college and pursuing a degree in an energy-related field of study with the
ambition of seeking to obtain full-time employment in the oil and gas business. Applications are available in the
guidance office or online at www.mogpef.org. Deadline: April 1, 2009.
Michigan Retailers Association
The MRA is providing at least 25 scholarships of $1000 each. These awards are not based on financial need. To be
eligible, the student or his/her parent must be employed at a business that is a member of MRA. To find out if a
particular business is a MRA member, students or parents should check with their employer. Applications are
available by calling 800-366-3699 or by requesting on online through the website www.retailers.com (the access code
is MIRA). Applications must be requested by March 14, 2009. Deadline: April 1, 2009.
Michigan State Troopers Assistance Fund
The Michigan State Troopers Assistance Fund offers an annual scholarship program to all graduating seniors in
Michigan who will attend college or trade school. Applicants must have at least a 3.25 GPA, and demonstrate
leadership skills through service to their community. Applications are available in the guidance office. Deadline:
April 1, 2009.
Michigan Tree Farm Scholarship
This scholarship is designed to encourage educational use and proper management of school forests and to increase
student awareness and understanding of natural resources and forest management. Awards are based on interest in
natural resources and participation in School Forest activities. Students must develop and complete a project relating
to the school forest. Projects can be on paper such as planning, mapping, etc. or physical field work such as pruning,
harvesting, etc. Project work from previous years is eligible. Deadline: April 1, 2009.
National Scholarships...
Rosa Parks Scholarship Foundation
The Rosa Parks Scholarship Foundation offers a $2000 one-year, non-renewable scholarship to graduating high
school seniors. Winners are selected on the basis of scholarship, leadership and dedication to the civil rights
principles of Rosa L. Parks, whose historic stand against racial prejudice in 1955 has brought her national recognition.
The foundation was established in 1980 to provide equal-opportunity scholarships to Michigan high school seniors.
Seniors who wish to apply must have a GPA or 2.5 or higher and be able to document active participation in
community activities. Applications are available in the guidance office or online at
www.rosaparksscholarshipfoundation.org. Deadline: March 1, 2009.
Ron Fountain Memorial Scholarship (7-Eleven/Garb-Ko)
This scholarship program provides college scholarships in the amount of $4000 to high school seniors. Applicants are
selected based on leadership, citizenship and personal essay. Applications are available in the guidance office.
Deadline: April 30, 2009.
Scholar Athlete Milk Mustache of the Year Award (SAMMY)
The purpose of this award is to recognize outstanding scholar athletes in grade 12 from high schools throughout the
contiguous United States. Winners receive a $7500 scholarship from Milk, an invitation to attend a SAMMY 2009
weekend at the Disney World Complex in Orlando, FL, scheduled for June 2009, and an opportunity to be pictured in
a special congratulatory Milk Moustache ad in a June 2009 edition of USA TODAY and other national magazines.
Judging will be based on 5 criteria: academic performance (35%), athletic excellence (35%), leadership (15%),
community service (10%), and milk experience (5%). Application will only be accepted online at
www.bodybymilk.com. Deadline: March 6, 2009.
