Amber Harris
Director, Digital Communications & Social Media
As director of digital communications & social media at Discovery Communications, Amber
Harris drives PR strategy and execution for Discovery’s Digital Media division and oversees
corporate social media strategy for the company. She also launched and championed the
company’s industry-leading live, on-air social media integrations – putting viewers at the center
of their favorite programs in real time and overseeing 150 hours of socially fueled programming.
Prior to assuming her current role in 2012, Harris led social media efforts for Discovery and
Science Channel, deepening relationships with fans and supporting cross-functional goals in a
rapidly evolving digital space. Additionally, Harris has supported the nonprofit Discovery
Learning Alliance and its innovative education initiatives, including the African and U.S. debuts
of the award-winning film, Inside Story.
Previously manager of digital communications until, Harris also served as manager of internal
communications prior to that – leading efforts to engage and inform the global Discovery
workforce and encouraging employees to act as brand ambassadors in professional and personal
settings. In this role, she oversaw day-to-day employee communications through the One
Discovery Portal (intranet), Executive NewsBlast, employee events and other vehicles.
Additionally, she was the internal communications lead for Discovery’s wide-ranging brands and
businesses, providing communications planning, executive support and coordinated execution
and measurement. An eleven-year Discovery veteran, Harris has also provided internal and
external communications support for the company’s production and technology groups,
coordinating employee-focused and business-facing campaigns for the launch of the state-of-theart Discovery Television and Technology Center and other key initiatives.
Harris graduated from Georgetown University with degrees in International Business and
Marketing and is a member of the Association of Cable Communicators, NCTA’s Digital
Communications Group and the Georgetown Entertainment & Media Alliance. In addition, her
communications and social media work with the Discovery team has been honored with a
PRWeek Award, a Beacon Award, multiple PR News Digital PR Awards, a Social Media
Influencer Award and a Shorty Award. She is based in Discovery’s World Headquarters in Silver
Spring, Maryland.
