Petra is an ancient city carved into the mountains of Jordan.
It was an important stop on the spice trade route and had a
population of about 20,000 residents. Although most of the
city’s homes were destroyed in earthquakes over time, many
of its rock-carved buildings still survive, including theaters
and temples. Petra was even featured in the 1989 film
Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade.

For example, China’s capital city, Beijing, has an absolute location of 39 degrees
north latitude, 116 degrees east longitude (39°N latitude, 116°E longitude).

Asia’s Relative Location
Relative location is the position of a place in relation to another place. How would you
describe where Asia is located in the world using relative location?
Look at the world map on the other page. One way to describe Asia’s relative location is
to name the other continents that border it. For example, Asia is east of Europe and north
of Australia. And Central Asia is northeast of Africa.
Another way to describe the relative location of Asia is to name the oceans that surround
the continent. The frigid Arctic Ocean borders Asia to the north. To the south is the
warm Indian Ocean. The vast Pacific Ocean borders Asia to the east.
