MESSAGE F RO M T H E C H A I R M A N
Living the good life! What a wonderful way to describe Athens. Whether you
are a first time visitor, a returning visitor
or make Athens your home, there is an
overwhelming desire to take in all the
good things Athens has to offer. In times
where hustle and bustle is the normal way
of living, the beauty and simple pleasures
of our community are a welcome retreat.
As you peruse our 2011 Athens Chamber of Commerce Magazine you’ll find
information about the many activities and
amenities available for an individual, family and group outings. A day at the Texas
Freshwater Fisheries Center provides both
an educational and entertaining experience. A stroll along the paths and trails
at the East Texas Arboretum brings the
beauty of nature to you. Our Henderson
County Performing Arts Center produces
outstanding entertainment with plays,
musicals and special performances by
extraordinarily talented local actors and
special guest actors.
The Cain Center has facilities to accommodate large or small group meetings
and sporting events along with a state of
6
the art fitness center and swimming pool.
The Henderson County Fair Park Complex hosts approximately 90,000 visitors
each year with events such as livestock
shows, rodeos and horse shows. These
venues make Athens a perfect location for
your next event.
Another vital area for the Athens area
is our agricultural community. Henderson County encompasses some 544,000
acres, the majority of which are used for
agriculture. Annual income derived from
agricultural related enterprises in 2009
was approximately $118,882,000. The City of Athens Tourism Department will provide visitors with information about lodging, events, restaurants,
shopping and all Athens has to offer.
Located in the downtown area at the
Visitors Center they are “at your service”
to provide details to make your visit to
Athens the best it can be. To simplify
your planning, visit their website at www.
athenstx.org.
Athens has been designated by the
Texas Department of Agriculture as a Certified Retirement Community. Activities
and events,
outstanding
healthcare, a
safe environment, educational opportunities,
community
involvement,
caring people
and the simple pleasures of life have
earned us this recognition. As you learn
about “living the good life” in Athens
you’ll understand why it’s a great choice
for retirement! For more information
about retiring in Athens please visit www.
athenstxretirement.com.
Along with the simple pleasures you’ll
find in Athens, you’ll also find a growing community attracting not only new
residents, but new businesses as well. The
strength of our business community has a
direct effect on the overall success of our
community as a whole. Your Chamber of
Commerce Board of Directors has many
goals for the upcoming year and doing
our job to support local business is at the
top of that list. Programs and events to
promote and encourage doing business
locally are well underway with more to
come in 2011. We appreciate our members and all they do for Athens. Working
together with other city organizations on
downtown revitalization is another key
area of focus for the Chamber in 2011.
I must take time to recognize two of
the hardest working groups within the
Chamber; our Chamber staff and our
Ambassadors. Sarah and Beth manage
the overall workings of our Chamber and
do an outstanding job. Ambassadors, 30
strong, are a group of Chamber members
who volunteer their time and represent
the Chamber proudly. These dedicated
individuals work long hours and take time
from their business and personal lives to
support the membership and “get things
done”. We thank you!
We are “living the good life” here in
Athens. The people and commitment of
working together is what makes us strong.
A quote from Michael Nolan sums it up
well. “There is somebody smarter than
any of us…and that is all of us”.

MESSAGE F RO M
THE MAYO R
What a great and dynamic city we live
in! I think most mayors would say that
about their city, but in Athens it’s different— because it’s true. If you’ve been here
fifty years or five days, you have already
figured that out, I’m sure.
We are fortunate to have many dedicated volunteers at the Chamber of Commerce and service clubs within our city
who work to see that our town provides
a quality of life not experienced anywhere
else. Our School District and Community
College helps provide a well-trained work
force spread out across town to provide the
best services available and we, as citizens,
benefit from that experience. Our City
Staff is always at the forefront of providing help and information to citizens and
visitors. We want you to be a part of this
wonderful dynamic life in our town.
Give us a try. You won’t be disappointed, I’m sure of that.

By Darlene Forshage
If you’re reading this,
chances are SOMETHING
has already sold you on the
idea of coming to Athens.
Be it retirement, a sporting
event, a weekend retreat,
or just plain curiosity…
you’ve either made the trip
or are planning to; and,
if we’re doing our job as
residents, you’ll be made
to feel welcome. Still, during your stay you will have
certain needs to be met in
order to feel as though your
time in town was worth the
effort. True?
To better plan for your trip, find us online at www.athenstx.org. Our new website is very user-friendly, engaging, and
informative. You may find an upcoming
event at the Henderson County Fair Park
appealing. Perhaps details in our online
itineraries sparked you to gather information about the East Texas Arboretum
or the Texas Freshwater Fisheries Center
and create your own interactive excursion? Maybe the site pointed you in the
direction of a series of GPS clues that will
lead you to hidden geocache “treasures”
throughout town? Or, did you submit an
online request to our travel professionals
for their help in planning a guided tour
for your group? Whatever activities you
decide upon, we’re going
to make sure that you enjoy yourself! While on the
website, remember to “like”
us on Facebook. Our Facebook Friends receive weekly
updates on events, and frequent access to promotions
available only through our
Facebook connection!
Get the most out of
your Athens visit. Make
your first stop the Athens Welcome Center, just
one block southwest of
the downtown courthouse
square at 201 W. Corsicana

of Athens Department of
Tourism, the Welcome Center can offer you a variety
of informational pieces on
local and area hotels, attractions, dining, events,
shopping, arts, parks, health
care, interesting facts and
much more. Our detailed
street maps pinpoint the
location and contact details
of our major attractions,
shopping areas, government offices, and
ATM machines, and even provide the
latitudes and longitudes if you’d rather rely
on your GPS unit to get you there. Oh,
and don’t forget to ask
for one of our famous
Discount Pages, containing special offers
available ONLY to our
out-of-town visitors!
As you look
around town, you’ll
quickly see the charm
of days gone by. But
don’t let our quaint
appearance fool you!
Today’s Athens is very
technologically savvy. Many local businesses are wireless hot-spots. More than
two dozen towers represent all major cell
phone providers and ensure uninterrupted
reception while you’re in the area; and
the majority of our restaurants and shops
are Foursquare-friendly, offering specials
when you check-in with your wireless device. We want you to relax and enjoy your

We’re going to do our very best to
ensure that your experiences in Athens are

Athens, T exas - Great R easons to be H ere !
If your looking for a great place to
visit, call home, or do business in then
you really should consider Athens, Texas.
We are blessed with beautiful country that
provides our residents opportunities for
the outdoor recreation. Boating, fishing,
water sports, camping and unlimited outdoor recreation is just out our backdoor
and our front door for that matter! Athens also has great education system. The
Athens Independent School District has
created the Pinnacle Early College High
School Program to allow our students to
obtain an Associates degree from Trinity
Valley Community College.
Athens is strategically located in east
Texas and is only one hour southeast of
the Dallas/Fort Worth Metroplex. Lakes,
parks and trails surround the community
providing beautiful natural landscapes for
local residents and visitors to explore and
enjoy! Athens continues to attract residential, commercial and industrial development supporting the professional and
healthcare service sectors, government,
consumer goods, advanced manufacturing
and distribution.
Athens continues to grow even in these
tough economic times. During this past
year many businesses have invested in
Athens. These new projects will change
the way Athens is viewed for many years.
Athens continues as a great place for business to invest and grow.
East Texas Medical Center is in the
midst of a $32.4 million expansion project
that will double the current hospital size
and bring new and improved services to
Athens and Henderson County. The twoyear project will take place in a series of
phases as the hospital is expanded with a
55,600-square-foot addition and some
12,000 square feet of existing space will be
remodeled. ETMC will expand its emergency services, surgery, labor and delivery
rooms, and radiology. Along with the
expansion comes the need for additional
employees. ETMC will hire an estimated
100 full- and part-time employees as
12
targeted departments expand. East Texas
Medical Center’s commitment to Athens
and Henderson County will help meet the
growing population here.
Trinity Valley Community College
(TVCC) has seen its Athens campus
continue to grow during the last several
years. TVCC is now in the process of
constructing a new $6 million residence
hall on campus. The new dormitory will
house up to 150 students and will be a
co-ed facility. The construction of the new
hall is the first step in the colleges master
plan, which they developed in 2009. They
identified the residential hall as one of the
colleges two most critical building needs.
TVCC’s enrollment continues to grow as
more students realize that they can have a
quality education here in Athens.
Prosperity Bank has broken ground on
a new bank that will be on the Square in
Downtown Athens. They will build the
new bank building to have the architectural and historical appearance that will
compliment the courthouse square. Prosperity officials hope the 8,000 foot facility
will help promote revitalization efforts in
downtown Athens. The new facility will
cost an estimated $3 million.
Besides these projects’ Athens continues to see growth in other areas. Best
Western Hotels opened a new facility in
Athens this year. Their new hotel has 61
rooms and meeting facilities. Lone Star
Western Wear will be constructing a
11,000 square foot building to increase
its existing sales area and add warehouse
space.
Howard Measurement moved its
headquarters to Athens and has built a
new office in the Athens Industrial Park.
Howard gathers and processes data from
gas well meters. Howard’s new facility will
also have a laboratory to test the quality
of the gas. Steritec, Inc. has added 10,000
square feet of warehouse, laboratory and
office space. The additional space will
allow Steritec to expand its sterilization
capability by adding 2 EO sterilization
units to service current and projected
new business. The expansion also entails
more lab space for new testing regimes.
Athens Jet Center is constructing a new
hangar at the Athens Municipal Airport.
The new hangar will allow Athens Jet to
house more aircraft in Athens.
The Athens Economic Development
Corporation (AEDC) is the organization
charged with promoting the economic
development of the city of Athens. It accomplishes its mission by marketing Athens as a desirable place for new businesses
to operate, and helping existing businesses
by addressing their needs.
The AEDC can provide funding for
use as incentives to businesses to begin
operations in Athens and to construct
any needed infrastructure such as roads,
utilities, and drainage projects. Athens is a
proactive & business friendly community
in the center of Henderson County that
has a population of more than 78,000
and is the County seat. Athens is home
to manufacturing and distribution companies such as Argon Medical Devices,
FutureMatrix Interventions, Red Dot
Building Systems, Seismic Energy Products, Athens Steel Buildings, Maximus,
and Schneider Electric.
Athens can offer training opportunities
through the Trinity Valley Community
College system and the State of Texas
Skills Development Fund. With existing facilities, a strategic location, and a
healthy infrastructure, Athens is a profitable decision for business growth and
development. With lakes, parks and trails
surrounding the community it provides
for beautiful natural landscapes to explore
and enjoy!
If your looking to relocate please let
us know how we can help! You can contact AEDC’s president Brian J. Malone
through its website at www. AthensEDC.
com, by telephone at (903) 675-4617, or
by Email at info@AthensEDC.com.
10 Reasons to Choose Athens
1. Location, Location, Location. We are close
to Dallas, but far enough away to enjoy an unsurpassed quality of life. Just an hours drive from
Dallas and 30 minutes from two interstates. Within
100 miles of Athens an estimated 7.6 million people
live and work.
2. Clean Air & Clean Water. Athens and
Henderson Count are in complete compliance
with all air quality standards. Athens also has some
of the best water in Texas supplied by the Athens
Municipal Water Authority and Lake Athens.
3. Pro Business Environment. Athens wants
to see our existing and new business grow and
succeed. We are continually looking for ways to
help business grow. The Citizens of Athens have
adopted a special sales tax to fund an economic
development program and provide incentives for
expanding business.
4. Growth. Henderson County is one of the
fastest growing Micropolitan County’s in Texas.
Athens is also a Certified Retirement Community.
5. Unlimited Recreation. Lakes, Fishing, Scuba
Diving, Hunting, Golf, Camping, Zip Lines, Nature Trails, Riding and Roping Events, Festivals,
Kayaking, Boating, Water Skiing, the Texas
Freshwater Fishery, The East Texas Arboretum
Community Theater, High School and College
Athletic Events - Just to name a few.
6. Outstanding Educational Opportunities.
From our local high schools to Trinity Valley
Community College (TVCC) we have got you
covered. Athens ISD and TVCC have developed
the Pinnacle Early College High School program
where our students can graduate from high school
with an Associate of Arts degree from Trinity Valley
Community College.
7. Growing Medical Facilities. East Texas
Medical Center provides state of the art care along
with nearly 60 physicians. Add in a wide range of
other medical clinics and your health needs will be
well-taken care of.
8. A Growing Retail Trade Area. Athens is the
center of retail trade area that has 99,000 people
with an Average Household Income of $54,636.
Athens continues to attract new retailers and development.
9. Bio-Tech Manufacturing Center of Texas
(BMC). Athens is home to a state of the art facilities that provides business incubation, clean room
manufacturing environment, mold making, extrusion and workforce training. Couple the BMC with
a growing medical manufacturing cluster a skilled
workforce and you can see why we are a great place
to do business!
10. Low Cost of Living. East Texas and Athens
cost of living is well below the national norm. ACCRA conducts a nationwide survey and calculates
the cost of living index each quarter for 314 areas
in the United States. Athens cost of living is a 91.
This means that Athens cost of living is 9% lower
than the U.S. average of 100. Housing costs in
Athens/Henderson County are nearly 21% below
the U.S. average.

CAIN C E N T E R
The Cain Center has been called the
“Crown Jewel” of Athens. Communities
of this size (around 10,000) typically do
not have a fitness and civic center of this
size and caliber.
The Cain Center boasts a Civic/Convention Center that many larger cities
would envy. Able to accommodate groups
for business meetings, private parties, reunions, dances, aerobics classes and much
more, the Cain Center rooms are reasonably priced and give event attendees the
added pleasure of beautiful surroundings.
The eighty-five acre Cain Park, surrounding the Cain Center, displays the
rolling hills, beautiful trees and ponds for
which East Texas is famous. The park also
provides walking and biking trails, tennis
courts, softball and soccer fields and playgrounds. It even has a full eighteen ‘hole’
disc golf course.
The various sized rooms make groups
as small as a dozen or as large as several
hundred feel comfortable in their sur-
14
roundings. Room
rentals always include free access
to the large, wellappointed kitchen
as well as table and
chair setups designed
to meet the needs
of each individual
group. Renters may
provide their guests
with the down home feel of covered dish
dinners or call on the services of any
number of local caterers to make their
event truly special.
Proudly joining the twenty-first century, the Cain Center has made wi-fi
available throughout the facility. Guests
may set up their computers in the upstairs
foyer to work in a relaxing, picturesque
atmosphere.
The Civic/Convention Center Area
is just the beginning, however. One level
down is the 25,000 square foot Fitness
Center, providing weight resistance equipment, cardio machines, a full free-weight
room, racquetball court, and the piece
de resistance, a twenty-five meter junior
Olympic indoor, heated pool. The area
also provides a hot tub, wet and dry saunas and complete locker room facilities.
Whether for recreation or serious minded
workouts, the Cain Center Fitness Area
has options for everyone.
Open to the public seven days a week,
athletic patrons may pay for a day, month,
three months, six months or twelve
months of usage. The Cain Center is open
Monday thru Friday 5:00 a.m. to 9:00
p.m., Saturday 9:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. and
Sunday 1:00 p.m. – 6:00 p.m. year round.
The Cain Center (CCI) is a nonprofit
organization dedicated to enhancing the
quality of life for the citizens of Athens
and Henderson County but the lives it
touches reach far beyond any county
border.
The Cain Center is home to great fitness classes. In partnership with ETMC,
CCI brings Fitness Plus to Seniors. A lowimpact aerobics class, Fitness Plus keeps
folks strong, flexible and moving! Silver
Sneakers, a program offered through several health insurance companies, targets
seniors, as well. Other classes offered include Yoga, Jazzercise, Karate, Kickboxing
and water aerobics.
The Cain Center also has partnered
with The Cancer Foundation for Life, a
Tyler organization that offers free CCI
Athletic Passes to cancer patients and
survivors along with exercise regimens
that have been proven to extend the lives
of cancer victims.
Another addition to the Cain Center is
the United Way Kid’s PACE Express. Designed with kids in mind, this area offers
fun and function. Interactive video games
such as Wii and Dance Dance Revolution,
team up with a traverse climbing wall and
kid-sized circuit training equipment to
help kids get and stay fit. Use of the area
is available on a daily basis.
Annual athletic events at the Cain
Center include the Athens Triathlon and
the Turkey Trot. The Athens Triathlon in
March is a great race for beginners and
for triathletes wanting to get the season
started right. A less demanding athletic
endeavor begins Thanksgiving morning
with a 5k and 1-mile Fun Run at the Annual Turkey Trot.
The Cain Center is the place to be
for activities year round. In the Summer,
kids can swim in the pool all day without
worry of sunburn and take lessons to learn
the basics or hone their swimming skills.
The Summer Day Camp offers tons of
fun activities including: daily swimming,
sessions in the Kid’s Gym, arts, crafts and
great games. Having fun in a safe environment is the number one priority but the
kids learn great lessons at the same time.
During the school year, the Cain Center offers a great variety of activities. Youth
flag and contact football in the Fall get
everyone in the spirit of the season. Swim
Team is a year-round activity for competitive swimmers of all ages and skill levels.
Other youth programs include Tennis,
T-ball, Bitty Basketball and Bitty Soccer.
Homework, mixed with fun and games
makes the time between school and going
home with parents go by fast for the kids
in the Wow-After School Program. Designed for children in grades Kindergarten
through Fifth grades, this program offers
tutorials and learning experiences along
with structured games.
The Cain Center is also the
home of several very special
events. The Home Improvement Show, All Things Bridal
Show and Christmas in July
are all annual events bringing
local vendors and their wares
to potential customers in the
climate controlled comfort of
the Multi-Purpose Hall.
Every Memorial Day Weekend, the Cain Center puts on
the Texas Swing Festival, starting the Summer off with authentic Texas
Swing Music, food, artisans and dancing.
Some of the finest Texas Swing Bands are
featured in a day-long event, culminating
with a different headliner band each year.
The Cain Center is a non-profit
501c3, located at 915 S. Palestine St.,
Athens, TX. For more information call
903.677.2001 or visit us online at www.

KEEP AT H E N S B E AU T I F U L
Keep Athens Beautiful started twenty three years ago as a beautification
committee of the Athens Chamber
of Commerce. Under the guidance of
Margaret Meyers and a dedicated group
of volunteers, it became a stand alone
non-profit group. Keep Athens Beautiful (KAB) is an affiliate of Keep Texas
Beautiful and Keep America Beautiful.
Keep Athens Beautiful’s mission is
to preserve the natural beauty and environment of Athens. This mission is
accomplished by forming partnerships
with individual volunteers, organizations,
schools and businesses and remaining very
active and visible within the community.
Through the dedication of the KAB
Board and Volunteers, KAB has won
seven Governor‘s Community Achievement Awards (GCAA). These awards have
enabled KAB to work with Texas Department of Transportation on beautification
projects along state maintained highways.
These projects include areas by Wal Mart
and a green belt area on South Highway
19 by the Save a Lot grocery and Ken’s
Pizza. We also painted the railroad under
pass on Highway 31 by Mazzio’s and on
Highway 175 heading towards Kaufman.
We planted over 35 trees along all of the
entries to Athens around the loop and
KAB is now working on a project that
will significantly enhance the entrance to
the Arboretum.
As a separate, non-GCAA related
project, Keep Athens Beautiful spent
two years working on the Historical Park
on Highway 19 and completely revitalized the park. That included new plants,
a retaining wall, and we now have a
maintenance program to maintain its
beauty. We also utilized grant money
to clean up the Dilsey creek, which runs
through the Trinity Valley Community College campus. To achieve these
awards and projects, KAB must have a
great program in place. Through our
committees, we are able to reach out to
the community and educate them about
recycling, litter prevention, illegal dumping and beautification.
Keep Athens Beautiful’s education
programs include activities at each campus throughout Athens. KAB’s “You Can
Make A Difference” signs are at each
campus entrance reminding the students
about litter every day. Some of our programs include the Graffiti Hurts program,
which is taught each spring to the 6th
grade. We also celebrate Arbor Day each
April by participating in a poster contest
for 5th graders and utilizing the Texas
Forestry program “Trees are Terrific…..

program that can be used at all levels to
teach about litter, recycling, landfills, and
other waste issues. It has been designed to
help with the testing (TAKS) that children
have to take each year. We hold an ECO
Camp each year for K – 4th graders and
it is hosted at the Arboretum. It is a week
long camp that teaches the children about
litter prevention, recycling, water prevention, and earth friendly discussions. A

create and perform a skit around the
litter theme and keeping Athens clean.
The KAB Education committee works

November 15th and our annual fall clean
up is held near that date on a Saturday.
KAB’s electronic recycling program has
grown each year and we are now doing
it at each clean up, both spring and fall.
KAB has many programs that we work
on year round to keep beautification, recycling and litter prevention in the minds
of Athens residents. We honor Beautiful

along with recognition in the newspaper,
on our website www.kabtx.org, and on
our Facebook page. There are many
Adopt-A-Highway and Adopt-A-Spot
programs in Athens that keep many areas
clean. Each fall, Keep Athens Beautiful
and the Central Business Association,
along with many volunteers, decorate the
Courthouse grounds on the square with
a harvest theme at each corner. KAB is
also the lead in the committee called
Light Up Athens, whose members are
KAB, CBA, and committee volunteers.
This committee works throughout the
year to make sure the square is decorated
for the Holiday season along with a great
celebration on the square the night of the
annual Christmas parade sponsored by the
Chamber of Commerce.
Keep Athens Beautiful manages the
Railroad Park, an initial Friends of the
Park project. It is a beautiful pocket park
at the corner of Tyler and Pinkerton.
KAB’s annual Home and Garden Show
is held in February each year at the Cain
Center.
“How do we keep Athens beautiful?”
you may ask. The key is in the “we”. “We”
are the many volunteers who work hard
throughout the year to make Athens the
great and beautiful place it is.

TE X A S F R E S H WATER FISHERIES CENTER
Catch Some Memories at the
Texas Freshwater Fisheries Center
By Larry D. Hodge
Of all the things we acquire during
a lifetime, only memories can’t be taken
away—and they become more precious
as time goes by.
“Catch some memories—go fish
Texas” is the Texas Freshwater Fisheries
Center’s slogan. Those six words define
what the Texas Freshwater Fisheries
Center (TFFC) is all about. It’s not just
about fishing, though that is an important
part of the visitor experience there. It’s
about families and friends enjoying time
together and forging memories that will
last a lifetime.
About half of TFFC’s 60,000 annual
visitors fish in the center’s stocked ponds,
and some 500 or so catch their first fish
ever there. For some this is the first time
they realize the truth in Henry David
Thoreau’s comment: “Many go fishing all
their lives without realizing it is not fish
they are after.”
18
Fishing at TFFC
Spending time with family is perhaps
the main motivation for fishing at TFFC.
TFFC makes it easy to take a child fishing.
No license is required for adults or children, and all bait and tackle are furnished.
Plentiful numbers of sunfish and catfish
are available for catching year-around, and
rainbow trout are stocked from December
through March.
TFFC ponds and streams are designed
with easy bank access. Piers provide access
for the mobility impaired. And the fish
bite every day, so even the first-time angler
has a good chance of catching a fish.
Staff at the Anglers Pavilion provide
a brief orientation to fishing and your
choice of whole-kernel corn or stinkbait.
They will also untangle line, replace lost
hooks or bobbers and fix any other equipment problems, leaving you free to concentrate on fishing. You may bring your
own fishing gear, but only single hooks
with barbs mashed down are allowed.
Most people choose catch-and-release
fishing, but harvest of channel catfish and
rainbow trout is allowed for a fee.
Fishing Events at TFFC
Fishing is available every day TFFC
is open, and fishing is a part of special
events. These events include:
• Fly Fish Texas, early March. Members of fly-fishing clubs from around Texas
teach fly-tying and casting. All equipment
is provided, or you may bring your own.
• Outdoor Fools Day, early April.
Learn about outdoor recreation opportunities in East Texas and acquire outdoor
skills such as archery, camping and outdoor cooking.
• Cinco de Mayo,
early May. Celebrate the
joint history of Texas and
Mexico with food, dance
and, of course, fishing.
• National Fishing
Day, first Saturday in
June. In addition to free
fishing, this event offers
free food and soft drinks
courtesy of the Athens
Wal-Mart Supercenter.
• Fireworks at the
Fishery, July 4. Admission is free after regular
hours, and fishing is allowed until an hour before the fireworks
show. Many people dress in red, white and
blue and bring a picnic.
Bobber Magic
Fishing at TFFC meets all the requirements experts say
help get kids interested
in fishing. Kathy Magers of Waxahachie is a
grandmother who fished
women’s professional
bass fishing tours for 18
years, but she remembers
exactly why, when and
where she got hooked
on fishing.
“My grandfather
taught me to fish in
Galveston Bay when I
was about four years
old,” Magers recalls. “He
had long popping corks,
green with a pink top.
He would rig one and throw it out for
me, and I knew that when that cork went
under, I had a fish on. I carry one of those
corks with me when giving talks on fishing, and when people ask what got me
interested in fishing, I show it to them.
The bobber is the icon of fishing. When
it goes under, it’s the signal that the fun
has begun.”
TFFC rigs all fishing rods with redand-white bobbers, and squeals and
shouts around the casting pond when
bobbers go under prove that they still
work.
Magers follows a one-hour-for-yearof-age rule when deciding how long to
fish with a child. TFFC
makes it easy to observe
this rule by providing a
variety of activities and
things to see if interest
in fishing wanes. There
are 300,000 gallons of
aquaria with native Texas
fish, a daily dive show,
an alligator exhibit and a
wetlands trail where kids
can go turtle-spotting,
see bees at work and walk
off steam. There’s a gift
shop with snacks, picnic
areas and grassy areas for
romping—plenty to keep active youngsters busy for several hours.
Despite having been a leading female professional angler and inductee
into the Texas Freshwater Fishing Hall
of Fame, Magers ranks
memories of fishing with
her grandchildren as the
most precious. “When
you fish with a child, you
bond with that child,
and no one can take
that away from you,”
Magers says. “I can’t
talk to my grandkids
on the phone, but put
them in a boat with me,
and we communicate.
The thing I like best is
when they call and say,
‘Grammie, when are
we going fishing again?’
That means either they
want to be with me, or they just want a
fishing guide, but I know for that one day
I rank above dolls and video games and
all those things—and I love it.”

H ENDERSON CO . PE R F O R M I N G A RTS
With the moniker, “THE” Community Theatre in East Texas, The Henderson
County Performing Arts Center, a 501C-3
organization, was founded in 1964 as a
Community Theatre under the name, Athens Little Theatre. The theatre presented
up to 4 productions a year until 1989. In
1989, a full-time Executive Director was
hired to carry out the mission statement of
the theatre.
With the Executive Director in place, the
theatre began producing 7 shows per season,
including two musicals each year.
Also, in 1989, the theatre developed a
Youth Program to bring new volunteers and
members into our programs. Since that time
the program has been expanded to include
fall, spring and summer programs for children and two main stage shows presented
by the group. The YES! Company(Youth
Excellence on Stage) continues to send its
traveling troupe to state theatre activities
and is identified as one of the top programs
in the state. The Youth Program was the
driving force in developing summer camps
and day care programs.
In 1996, a touring company was organized to meet the needs of community
groups and local community theatres that
were looking for entertainment. The Touring Company travels around the state and
region presenting new shows every year.
The theatre is very active in the community through its participation in the
Chamber of Commerce and the various
tourism programs.
The mission statement of the theatre
simply stated is: We Entertain. We Educate. We Change Lives. In that endeavor,
the theatre opened its Education Building
and Black Box Theatre on the property to
provide more outreach programs for the
community and to continue the efforts to
present quality entertainment by utilizing a
new, additional playing space. We are a full
service Community Theatre that provides
more than just entertainment for the area.
We are committed to bringing the theatre
arts to all ages. We have a strong working
relationship with the college and the Independent School Districts in the region.
22
In 2007, the Board of Directors secured
funds for a new 10,000 square foot theatre
space. The new space has seating capacity
for 130 with a multi-purpose stage which
allows the theatre to present 10 shows per
season with 6 on the main stage and 4 in
the Black Box space.
Since the construction of the new facility, the theatre has expanded its outreach in
programs by extending the productions to
those works of new playwrights. The theatre
is committed to do at least one new work
each year and that number is expanded to
two new works every other year.
Each year the theatre plays host to a
group of travelers as it sets up a New York
Trip to see the sights, shop, eat and enjoy
Broadway theatre. The group trips started
in 2004 and continues today. Trips are in
October or March depending on the group
traveling. Theatre trips are also available
for local regional theatres in Dallas and
Houston.
The Henderson County Performing Arts
Center has committed to a capital campaign
to invest in the future of the theatre. The
Legacy program will enlist the support of the
communities, civic organizations, schools,
families, patrons and ARTS supporters who
understand the part arts organization play
in a community’s overall quality of living.
The theatre is committed to building a
community that lasts. People from diverse
cultural, economic and social backgrounds
come together to create engaging theatre
productions, learn life skills and celebrate
what is best within themselves. HCPAC
plays a vital role in creating future arts
supporters and audiences by making theatre available and accessible to the entire
community. We attract a wide and diverse
range of participants and audiences through
our youth programs, education activities,
community awareness programs and professional entertainment that touches all who
participate.
Over the 46 years of operation, thousands of people have participated in our
programs. Involvement, particularly at a
young age, in an activity that challenges,
teaches and enlivens has a lasting impact on
the people we become. Whether our actors
go on to pursue careers in the arts or other
fields, involvement in the theatre brings out
the best they can offer to the world.
For our young actors the impact is transformational. They have found a safe haven
in HCPAC to explore themselves in their
own creative medium. Young people and
Seniors alike who are struggling with their
lives can discover their innate strengths and
talents through participation in a creative,
collaborative way.
We are, by all accounts, the grassroots
catalyst for the arts, providing these additional services to the community:
· Year-round opportunities for participation
through summer camps, special events and
a myriad of onstage experiences
· Production and rehearsal space for other
theatre groups when HCPAC is not in
production
· Technical assistance to other civic and
performing groups, including school district
theatres
· Incubator space for developing playwrights
· Mentoring opportunities in acting, dance,
music and technical theatre

EA S T T E X A S M E DICAL CENTER ATHENS
Hospital expansion boasts ‘WOW’ factor
Construction project complements ETMC Athens’ commitment to superior service
ETMC Athens kicked off its two-year
expansion project last winter with the
massive stationary crane serving as a major
symbol of progress in action.
The hook of the crane stands 89 feet
off the ground. At a maximum reach of
246 feet, the crane is able to lift a load of
up to 6,170 pounds. With the load next to
the base of the crane, it has a lift capacity
of up to 25,000 pounds.
“The reach of the boom is important
because, at some point, it must be able
to reach across the existing building,”
said ETMC Athens Administrator Pat
Wallace.
The goal for completion has been
set for the fourth quarter of 2011, and,
according to Steve Lowe, director of engineering and safety at ETMC Athens,
things got off to a good start.
“We’re very excited that after so many
years, this expansion is finally coming to
fruition,” said Wallace. “This hospital
wowed people when it opened in 1986,
26
and we believe what we’re adding here will
wow them all over again.
The $32.4 million project is taking
place in a series of phases as the southwest
corner of the hospital is expanded with a
55,600-square-foot wraparound. Twelve
thousand square feet of existing space will
be remodeled.
Upon completion, the expanded portion of the hospital will have required
100 tons of rebar, 6,745 cubic yards of
concrete and 14,777 square feet of exterior glazed glass. In addition, the project
requires 108,500 feet of conduit, 91 miles
of wire and 32 tons of copper.
The first order of business in the
project is to complete the new emergency department, which is scheduled to
open during the summer of 2011. The
brand new ER will boast 20 spacious
exam rooms, two state-of-the-art trauma
rooms, and a spacious, private waiting
area. Outside the new emergency room,
a multi-lane canopy will provide shelter
for two ambulances and from six to eight
cars at a time.
Occupying the very corner of the new
space will be the intensive care unit, which
will have two more patient beds than its
current eight.
The third department to occupy the
new space will be surgery, where there will
be a new prep-and-hold area, five operating rooms (up from the current three), a
recovery area and day surgery space.
Once the ICU is relocated into the new
space, the OB department will expand
its footprint to include the area currently
being occupied by the ICU. Among the
gains for the OB department will be eight
additional “labor, delivery, recovery and
postpartum” rooms. The department
currently has one LDRP room, which
provides a spacious environment where
expectant moms can, in most cases,
stay throughout their hospital stay. All
the existing postpartum rooms will be
refurbished.
The radiology department will also
expand, thanks to space made available
by the adjustment of departments.
In the meantime, ETMC Athens
continues to offer the most-up-to-date,
cutting-edge technology available. That
includes two 64-slice computed tomography scanners, which produce detailed
images of the body’s anatomy with blazing
speed; a full-field digital mammography
unit; two state-of-the-art Philips BrightView nuclear medicine cameras; and a
short-bore MRI unit, which is about half
the length and twice the diameter of a
standard MRI, so patients feel less anxious
about being in an enclosed space.
In addition, ETMC Cedar Creek Lake
has a Phillips High Field Open MRI
scanner, which, in addition to being stateof-the-art, has no enclosures at all. That’s
good news for larger-sized patients or
those who may deal with claustrophobia.
The commitment to offering the best
diagnostic tools possible is one of many
ways ETMC Athens has served the Henderson County community for over two
decades. More than 8,000 people are
Mark L. Eldore,

for a rural hospital.
Over 900 expecting mothers chose
ETMC Athens to deliver their babies in
2009 – and no wonder. In addition to the
caring staff, a variety of delivery options
are available, from natural childbirth to
cesarean section. Expectant parents also
have the opportunity to participate in a
variety of childbirth preparation classes
and receive special amenities during their
hospital stay. Classes are also provided for
grandparents and siblings, in addition to
general parenting training.
Over 4,800 surgeries were performed
in 2009 at ETMC Athens, maintaining the hospital’s reputation for surgical
expertise. The combination of highly
skilled personnel and modern technology
produces good results day in and day out.
Hundreds of inpatient and day surgery
procedures take place each month. Staff
surgeons represent specialties including
orthopedics, urology, podiatry, gynecology, ophthalmology, otolaryngology (ear,
nose and throat) and general surgery.

admitted each year to the hospital, and
each of those individuals, as well as those
treated on an outpatient basis, has full
access to the hospital’s highly skilled staff
of healthcare professionals and physicians
offering head-to-toe medical care.
ETMC Athens offers extensive laboratory services, and diagnostically, in addition to those services already mentioned,
the hospital offers bone density screening,
ultrasound and general X-ray.
The hospital also provides diagnostic cardiology services such as a cardiac
catheterization lab, cardiac stress testing, virtual cardiac angiography, cardiac
ultrasound, including echocardiography,
with an outpatient cardiac and pulmonary
rehab program.
The emergency department at ETMC
Athens has been repeatedly designated as
a Level III Trauma Center by the Texas
Department of State Health Services,
which means area residents in immediate
need of medical attention always have a
place to go for quality care.
The trauma services at ETMC Athens

radiology, laser surgery, laparoscopic

in kidney stone lithotripsy, pain management and endoscopy are other important
services provided.
Athens is far from the only place
ETMC operates in Henderson County.
There are three outpatient rehabilitation
centers across the county and several First
Physicians clinics.
In December 2009, ETMC Regional
Healthcare System purchased the Athens Cancer Center – now the ETMC
Cancer Institute in Athens – and, as of
this writing, is in the process of updating
the facility. The ETMC Cancer Institute
in Athens was scheduled to re-open in
November 2010, featuring a dual energy
linear accelerator. The new accelerator
will allow patients to receive even more
precise radiation treatments with even
fewer side effects.
The ETMC Cedar Creek Lake facility
offers a 24-hour emergency department
supported by diagnostic radiology and
laboratory services, physicians’ clinics and
an ETMC Olympic Center. The Olympic
Center offers physical, occupational and
aquatic therapy and cardiac and pulmonary rehab and fitness facilities.
In addition, ETMC Home Health,
with offices in Athens and Gun Barrel
City, is the largest hospital-based home
health care service in the region.
ETMC also works hard to provide its
neighbors in Henderson County with
preventative healthcare. A variety of health
seminars and educational programs are
provided free-of-charge throughout the
year.

district goal is for all campuses to reach the
TEA rating of ‘Exemplary’ while meeting
the needs of all children. Throughout the
district the effort to achieve this is through
the power of one; one teacher, one grade,
one campus, one team! The ‘Power of
One’ can be very potent!
To achieve the district mission, student
achievement is job one for AISD. Each
and every child is important as an individual. To help us open the door to the
future for our students, we consistently
upgrade technology resources.
Advancements in technology
allow teachers to keep up with
the ever-changing world and
to pass that knowledge on to
their students. Technology is
provided to students in the
form of laptops at the high
school. It is important to increase the technology access to
students which can enhance their critical
thinking, problem solving and decision
making skills. We have reached a crucial
time in our history where workers at all
levels will be required to have more than
a basic working knowledge of technology. Our students will be well equipped
to meet those needs. This creates future
learners who are informed, responsible
and caring citizens in a global community.
AISD maintains five campuses including some built as early as 1956. Upgrades
and additions have enhanced the structural foundation at each campus. Secure
and safe entrances, fencing and new wings
have allowed the district to address the
steady growth of the student population.
Knowing the importance of consistency in young children’s lives, and valu30
ing the community’s desire
to keep single attendance
campuses, the district has
developed a unique system
to keep students together
from age 4 through 3 rd
grade. Using a ‘spiraling’
concept, the two elementary campuses, Bel Air Elementary and South Athens Elementary
house students from Pre-K/Head Start
through third grade. In its fourth year,
students, parents and staff agree that everyone knows each other much better and
that students transition less, giving them
continuity in their young lives. Both campuses hold the TEA ‘Recognized’ rating
for the third year in a row. Both campuses
have dedicated and caring staff and take
seriously the charge they have been given.
Parent Teacher Organizations (PTO) exist on both campuses and they depend
upon dedicated and supportive parents
to be involved. Volunteer and mentoring
programs can also be found which brings
community involvement into the schools.
Athens Intermediate School, a TEA
‘Recognized’ campus for the second consecutive year, is home to district 4th and
5th graders. The focus is on student data
and achievement, and constantly improving instruction. This campus’ theme ‘On
the VERGE of Exemplary’ speaks to their
commitment to strive constantly for improvement. AIS has been a recipient of
the District Awards for Teacher Excellence
(D.A.T.E.) Grant for three years. The
grant has allowed the campus to develop
a true professional learning community
through the implementation of TAP (The
System for Teacher and Student Advance-
ment). This model provides an avenue for
teachers to advance into leadership roles
while still remaining in the classroom.
Student achievement and improved
instruction are the primary focus of the
grant and the model.
Campus Principal, Dr. Janie Sims
comments, “AIS is home to an extremely
caring and knowledgeable faculty and
staff ”. “We have a strong professional
development plan on this campus, and
a positive culture that extends from the
genuine care for each other to the nurturing of the students entrusted to them”.
Athens Middle School,
a TEA ‘Recognized’ campus,
houses the district’s students in
grades 6 through 8. Whether in
the classroom or outside, AMS
strives to help their students
achieve a balance between the
social, emotional and academic
growth of adolescence. A highly
qualified staff focuses on research-based instructional best practices
and works to provide a curriculum that is
designed to ensure innovative, customized
learning opportunities for all students.
Beginning with a solid core academic
program, students can then add subjects
such as band, choir, art, theater, speech,
Spanish, athletics, and journalism. Pre
Advanced Placement (Pre-AP) classes also
allow students to participate in rigorous
and academically challenging courses in
preparation for high school and beyond.
The campus also offers AP Spanish, which
can provide students not only with high
school Spanish credit, but college credit,
also. The AMS band holds University
Interscholastic League (UIL) sweepstakes
honors in concert and sight reading for the
past six years and the one act play holds
numerous district awards for achievement
in annual productions including students
as Best Actress/Actor and All Star Cast.
Athens High School, grades 9 through
12, rounds out the districts goal that “Every student will graduate on time, college
and work ready”. Numerous possibilities
allow all students to achieve and prepare
for their future.
Advanced Placement (AP) and dual
credit classes allow students to receive
college credit before they graduate from
high school.
A partnership program with Trinity
Valley Community College (TVCC) has
created a school within a school concept,
an Early College High School (ECHS).
Here, students begin taking college credit
hours as freshmen and can achieve their
Associates Degree or 60 college hours the
same month that they graduate from High
School. In their third year, the program is
grant funded through the local Murchison
Foundation with 142 students in grades
9 – 11. The unique program is one of less
than 50 in the state and is noted as a TEA
model program.
The Career and Technology Education
(CATE) Pathways allow students to focus
on trade and technical programs to begin
their higher education or launch their
careers. Culinary Arts, Certified Nursing
Assistant (CNA), pharmacy technician,
welding, and broadcast journalism are just
a few of the new programs AHS has initiated, some in conjunction with TVCC.
Credit recovery classes and an Alternative Education Program (AEP) allow
students an opportunity to complete their
education via non-traditional routes.
AHS can also boast to accomplishments outside of the classroom. Student
success can be seen in the form of UIL
District, Regional and State Championships in One Act Play, Debate, CX, Lincoln-Douglas, Band, Solo and Ensemble,
Choir Concert and Sight Reading, Future
Business Leaders Association (FBLA), Future Farmers Association (FFA), Athletics,
Felllowship of Christian Athletes (FCA),
to just name a few.

TR I N I T Y VA L L EY COMMUNIT Y COLLEGE
Trinity Valley Community College has
come a long way since classes first began
in borrowed space during the fall of 1946.
The college has seen tremendous
growth the past two years and is now
serving more than 8,000 students at
campuses in Athens, Palestine, Terrell,
and Kaufman.
Today, students don’t even need to be
in the classroom to complete coursework.
Many are opting to enroll in Internetbased classes, and TVCC has become a
leading provider of classes through the
Virtual College of Texas.
In addition, classrooms equipped
for videoconferencing allow professors
to teach classes simultaneously on two
different campuses or even at area high
schools and universities that are part of
the Northeast Texas Network.
In addition, TVCC instructors have
developed numerous hybrid courses—
classes where a student completes part
of the workload online and attends lass
for the other part of the course. Hybrid
Classes combine the advantages of faceto-face interaction with the convenience
of the Internet.
However, the technology age hasn’t
eliminated the need for desks and chairs.
32
More students than ever are attending
classes at TVCC’s four campuses.
Over the past 15 years, the institution
has constructed a new academic building,
residence hall, cafeteria, bookstore and
learning resource center at the Athens
campus and a learning resource center
at the Terrell Campus. Recently, the Palestine campus was remodeled and now
boasts new science labs and a redesigned
floor plan.
The newest facility at TVCC-Athens
is expected to open by fall 2011. A threestory, 48,000 square-foot residential hall
is currently being constructed on the
northwest side of the campus. The 150bed facility will offer students a greater
chance to be a part of on-campus life.
TVCC is dedicated to improving the
quality of education and the richness of
campus life for all its students.
By offering additional programs such as the electronic media courses now
offered in Athens - and new activities
such as the new Lady Cardinal volleyball
program, TVCC is working to meet all of
the needs of its students.
TVCC serves a large cross-section of
the community’s population. The “traditional” 18-year-old recent high school
graduate accounts for about 10 percent
of enrollment. More than half of the students are at least 22 years of age, making
for a large adult population at the TVCC
campuses.
About 85 Percent of students come
from the college’s service area, which includes all or part of Anderson, Henderson,
Kaufman, Van Zandt and Rains counties.
TVCC offers a range of academic
and occupational programs for students
who want to complete two years of college before transferring to a university or
who need one or two years of training
before beginning a career in a trade such
as cosmetology, horticulture or ranch
management.
In addition to regular courses, TVCC
also offers non-credit continuing education classes that range from “fun” courses
such as ceramics and cake decorating to
career-oriented classes designed to help
students become proficient in areas such
as computer literacy, real estate and forklift operation.
The college’s Adult Education Department offers adult students special, and
sometimes free, services to help them gain
job skills or knowledge needed to help
them get a college education.
The Health Science Center in Kaufman houses many
of the institution’s health occupations programs, which
include Associate Degree
Nursing, Vocational Nursing,
Surgical Technology, Emergency Medical Technician,
and Patient Care Technology.
The campus is also a distance
education site for the University of Texas at Arlington’s
Bachelor of Science in Nursing program.
TVCC officials are also
planning to begin construction of a new Health Science Center in
the coming months. The facility will be
located adjacent to the current HSC and
will provide the needed space for the
college’s expanding medical profession
programs.
Ther’s also plenty of time for fun at
TVCC. The Student Activities Department calendar is filled with special events,
tournaments and student trips. Students
involved in the various student organiza-
tions are active in community events and
serve as tutors and mentors to younger
students in area public schools.
TVCC is also the home of champion
athletic teams. Teams from the college
have brought home 15 national titles in
football, basketball and cheerleading since
the late 1980s. The institution participates
in the Southwest Junior College Football
Conference in football and in the Region
XIV Athletic conference in men’s and
women’s basketball.
Performance groups are also
an important part of the TVCC
culture, including award-winning marching and jazz bands
and a choral group which offers
students performance opportunities in various musical styles.
This year, the Cardette
dance team is celebrating its
50th anniversary with a variety
of special events. The team
has served as ambassadors for
TVCC at events across the nation and around the globe.
The TVCC faculty, administration and staff are deeply
involved in the community. College
employees are members of area civic organizations and economic development
boards. The college also provides many
events for the community, including concerts, plays, forums and job fairs.
For more information about TVCC,
Contact the college at 903-675-6200
or 1-866-TVCC-YES or log onto www.

“ If it’s going on … it’s going on here!”
The Henderson Fair Park Complex
is located just three miles east from
downtown Athens TX.HWY. 31 where
it boasts the best location, amenities and
rates available in East Texas.
If you’re looking for an entertainment
like rodeos, livestock shows, horse shows,
dog shows, trade shows and concerts,
you’ve found the spot. Fair Park annually hosts the area’s premiere rodeos: the
PRCA Stampede Rodeo sponsored by the
Athens Chamber of Commerce in April
and the MDA Rodeo sponsored by Stace
Smith in August. Henderson County’s
Livestock Show in March is a five day
event which pulls together the county’s
youth as they show the animals they’ve
raised during the year, the projects they’ve
built and compete for honors in various
categories.
All of this takes place at the Park’s
68 acre facility which has two covered
arenas. The larger one is 120’ X 250’,
and is cooled by six fans and has a seating
capacity of 4,500. The J.D. Lewis Arena
is the smaller of the two, 125’ X 275’,
with bleacher seating for 300 guests and
a climate controlled announcer’s booth. A
large outdoor arena, 140’ X 300’, is ideal
for activities not requiring cover.
As you drive past the Fair Park’s entrance, take time to read the scrolling
sign which posts the Park’s current and
up-coming events as well as some of the
community’s happenings.
So you see, “If it’s going on … it’s going
on here!” Come be a part.
