Under the direction of an eleven member Board of Directors representing the five Chamber chapters, CCLACC sponsors and/or participates in numerous activities and events throughout the year. Monthly luncheon meetings and at least one monthly Business After Hours are sponsored by the Chamber, along with ribbon cuttings and grand opening support for members. The various chapters also hold regular meetings and host or participate in their communities on projects throughout the year.
The Chamber is a private 501(c) 6 membership organization, receiving no public operating funds. With the opening of new hotels, the staff and volunteers have become more aggressive in planning and helping with events that are focused on attracting visitors to Cedar Creek Lake.
The chamber-sponsored Leadership
Cedar Creek Lake is in its sixth year. The nine-month program features classes in various government agencies, medical and education. The Mission Statement of Leadership Cedar Creek Lake is, “To teach, develop and enhance leadership skills and community knowledge to prepare individuals for elected and appointed positions in the community” and all area citizens are welcome and encouraged to apply. Contact Jo Ann Hanstrom at

Each Legislative year, the staff organizes and leads a visit to the State Capitol to meet with our Senators, State Representative and agencies that are pertinent to our rural concerns. The trip is open to all citizens who have an interest and ample notice is given so that anyone wishing to participate can make reservations. It’s a valuable and informative mission for the
Cedar Creek Lake community every two years.
The staff and Board of Directors of the chamber take a great deal of pride in being a first class organization that not only offers support to the business community, but also stands ready to help improve quality of life for citizens in the area.

Caney City, with its miles and miles of shoreline and woodlands sits on the tip of a peninsula jutting westward into
Cedar Creek Lake. Situated between the first two bridges on Highway 198 headed north out of Malakoff, Caney City has an abundance of natural beauty and offers residents and visitors alike services and conveniences on or near the water.
Being one of the first towns to be incorporated on Cedar Creek Lake, Caney
City possesses a long history that has been written up in many articles concerning the development of the Lake community.
Because of the pioneering efforts of those individuals who were responsible for the beginnings of the town, visitors and residents today will find easy access to food, fuel, beverage and entertainment.
Those who come to Caney City will enjoy easy access to dining and entertainment, fuel, grocery and beverage, bait and tackle, car repair, self-storage units, cabins, shelters and grounds for camping and picnicking. All of these amenities can be enjoyed surrounded by scenic beauty with deep wooded areas, wildlife and great fishing.
This all adds up to fun, convenience and opportunity right on Cedar Creek
Lake and they invite you to stop in for a visit or call them at 903.489.1844 or email at CaneyCity@aol.com
for more information on Caney City and the area.
Nine miles of shoreline timbered with tall oaks makes Enchanted Oaks a residential retreat of unsurpassed rustic beauty, covering more than 220 acres. The incorporated town is located between Gun
Barrel City and Malakoff, just off Hwy.
198 South.
In 1967, Community Engineering chose a beautifully wooded area on the shores of Cedar Creek Lake to develop what is now Enchanted Oaks. A property owners’ association was established in
1973, and the Town of Enchanted Oaks became incorporated on December 14,
1974.
Seven miles of streets encompass the small community, where friendly neighbors and many volunteers pride themselves on maintaining a clean and safe environment. Enchanted Oaks boasts many amenities such as a town hall, volunteer fire department, park, swimming pool, library and two boat ramps. Residents spend many volunteer hours dedicated to crime prevention and road improvements to maintain and improve the quality of life to which they have become accustomed.
The Enchanted Oaks City Council is comprised of the mayor and five council members who are elected at large for a two year term. The elected officials and residents of Enchanted Oaks are committed to making the community one of the best places to live on Cedar Creek Lake.

The City of Eustace, conveniently located between Mabank and Athens on U.S. Highway 175, takes pride in its historic Town Square, which features a beautifully landscaped courtyard.
This historical and quaint community is home to Purtis Creek State Park, located
7
8 only three miles north of the town, which provides visitors with camping facilities, as well as the opportunity to experience the great outdoors in a naturally preserved setting.
Purtis Creek State Park draws visitors from all over the country to fish for champion-size black bass. While the lake has a catch-and-release policy for black bass, other varieties of fish can be caught, kept and eaten.
Besides fishing, the park offers nature at its best, with walking trails for opportunities of viewing all kinds of wild animals and birds.
There are walking and bike paths, as well as a swimming area newly refinished in 2007. Boats can be brought and used, as long as they adhere to the park’s nowake speed limit, so fishermen will be undisturbed as they try to catch that really big bass.
Cedar Creek Lake, the centerpiece of the area, offers a larger surface area, with opportunities for high-speed boating and jet-skiing. Eustace may be one of the best spots for fishermen and boaters to live.
The Eustace Independent School
District has continually maintained high standards for all grade levels. It manages to maintain the status of a very highly rated school district dispensing a top-flight education to its students.
Eustace residents enjoy the slower pace of small town and ranch living.
Named after W.T. Eustace, a captain of the Confederate States Army under
Gen. Robert E. Lee, the community has continued to expand since its formation at the turn of the century. Though Capt.
Eustace lived in Athens, the local citizens felt the town should be named after him.
Eustace, located in Henderson
County, was established in 1900, when the T & NO Railroad pushed eastward from Kemp to
Athens. This closed a gap that had existed for 27 years, and made it possible for travelers to ride the train from Dallas to Beaumont.
With lots being sold for $20 per acre, half of the lots were snapped up the first day. Merchants were eager to take advantage of the new railroad and began to move to the Eustace townsite.
A saloon, cotton gin and a lumber yard were started in 1900.
The first newspaper, the Eustace
Herald , was established in 1914 by Will Justice.
Thirty plus years ago, a closeknit group of friends (affectionately known as the ‘Dirty Dozen’) began the process of making their unincorporated community a ‘real’ town. Soon after their vision, and 200 signatures later, an election was held to decide the fate of the group’s dream. As the votes were tallied, their dream became reality by a mere four votes and Gun Barrel City was born. In 1996, with the population being over 5,000, the citizens voted to become a Home Rule City.
Gun Barrel City lies on the eastern shore of Cedar Creek Reservoir fifty-five miles southeast of Dallas. The community d e v e l o p e d after construction of the reservoir in 1969 and grew rapidly from sixty r e s i d e n t s in 1970 to
6,000 plus i n 2 0 1 0 .
T h e t ow n name is derived from its motto, “We Shoot Straight with You,’ and its symbol, a rifle. Long before the lake was built, Gun Barrel Lane (now
State Highway 198) traversed the area.
This mud road was a shortcut across
Cedar Creek from Mabank to Trinidad and Seven Points. The City has received several State Honored Awards including achieving a Go Texan Certification and becoming the only Certified Retirement
Community on Cedar Creek Lake in
2009. What began as a small rural community has grown into a thriving retail business district (the largest in western
Henderson County). Gun Barrel City is the retail hub for a trade area of more than 75,000 people and features NO city property tax.
It’s an increasingly upscale water sport playground with prominent retailers such as Super Walmart, Lowes Home Improvement, Radio Shack, Chili’s, CVS Pharmacy, CiCi’s Pizza, Golden Belle Bingo,
MovieStar Cinema with eight screens and
Denny’s. The La Quinta, the City’s fourth hotel, opened in 2010. Gun Barrel City plans to continue to reach new horizons by pursuing new medical facilities including an ETMC doctor’s facility. With plenty of retail space and land available,
the planning of new roads and expansions to the City Park includes a 9,600 square foot pavilion.
Efforts at the City level have paved the way for remarkable growth in Gun
Barrel City for years to come. The City has worked to establish a comprehensive future land use plan, a thoroughfare plan and a parks plan, all of which will be indispensable in drawing new development.
While always looking to the future, the
City has kept a keen focus on promoting the high quality of life and sense of community for which Gun Barrel City is known. Residents, visitors, businesses and retirees can be sure that the things that make the City a beloved community will remain strong well into the future.
The City is looking forward to an explosive future. Gun Barrel City holds two festivals each year. The July 4th
Festival features a Concert in the Park with well known performers followed by an extravagant display of fireworks.
The Christmas Festival boasts a lighted parade at night where the lights from the entries shine as bright as the Texas sky.
The evening culminates with a fireworks display choreographed to music. You can visit the festival website at www.gunbarrelcityfestivals.net
for more information regarding these events.
In comparison to other cities, Gun
Barrel City is young and forward-looking.
This is why Gun Barrel City is the ‘Heart of Cedar Creek Lake’ and would like to extend some of their East Texas hospitality to you. Visit the City’s website at www.gunbarrelcity.net
or the Economic
Development Corporation’s website at www.gbcedc.com

The City of Kemp, population 1,334, located on the north end of Cedar Creek
Lake in southeast Kaufman County, has improved many of its community services, positioning itself for significant economic development. It is 46 miles from the center of town to Main Street in Dallas.
Its newest addition, a retail center with the First National Bank of Kemp as its anchor, opened for business in 2010 on
State Highway 274 in Kemp. Its location is in close proximity to Kemp’s new
$23 million high school, next to Yellowjacket Stadium.
The Kemp Independent School
District has developed a reputation of providing quality academics and has a growing band program garnering many top awards. A new Primary school building, just west and north of town, is a center for community involvement.
Kemp was named after Sarah Kemp
Noble, mother of city pioneer Levi Noble.
Levi was appointed as the city’s first postmaster May 27, 1851.
Kemp has seen the arrival and departure of the railroad. When the lake was being built in the early 1960s, the tracks and trains still came through town. The trains continued for about 10 years after the lake was filled, and then the tracks were taken up. The railroad assured prosperity for cotton farmers, as cotton was by far the leading money-maker for lower Kaufman County.
Kemp was touched by history when the infamous Bonnie and Clyde came into the town, followed by the subsequent capture of Bonnie Parker. The old city jail, where she was temporarily held, is still located near the police department and city hall. There is a historical marker at the site.
The town has several quaint older homes representing period architecture, adding to the town’s quiet, small-town atmosphere. The roadside medians and pastures surrounding the city come alive with bluebonnets and other wildflowers in the spring.
Several retail stores, plus fast-food and traditional restaurants throughout the town offer residents convenience and variety. The Pennsylvania Dutch Bakery is rapidly making Kemp a must-stop for people from all over Texas, who have heard about it through the grapevine and some radio commentaries.
Just down SH 274, The HamLins apartment complex offers convenient quarters outside the metroplex with all the amenities of upscale living at affordable prices.
Beacon Hill, a luxury housing development located in Kemp on US Hwy. 175, offers the utmost in lakeside living with a planned marina on Cedar Creek Lake, in addition to its own spacious swimming lake and bird-watching trails, clubhouse and spacious lots.
With easily accessible golf courses, including the Cedar Creek Country Club and King’s Country Club, plus various community activities and organizations to offer residents and visitors, Kemp has truly captured the essence of lakeside country living.

In 1969, a company called Areaco Inc. began developing the company’s second resort community. Its first resort was built
9
in Missouri and in seeking a location for their second, found the perfect spot near
Malakoff, Texas and called it Log Cabin
Estates.
The original concept was to build a recreational resort, where people could get away from the city and take their families for vacations and weekend getaways. In the process of development, some lots were offered for sale and others became contractual memberships.
Areaco and various POA associations in Log Cabin Estates vied for control of the community for many years. Log Cabin
Estates incorporated Jan. 17, 1987, and became the City of Log Cabin.
Log Cabin boasts an RV park with 18 sites, each with water, sewer and electricity. It has brick homes on the waterfront and site-built homes on lake-view lots.
The jewel of Log Cabin is its spacious marina with two boat ramps, a circular dock and public swimming beach, flanked by a wooded park, ideal for camping and
RVing. The city park hosts a number of major bass fishing tournaments, along with chili cookoff contests and various seasonal festivals.
Log Cabin is convenient to Malakoff and Athens. It would be a great place to retire or build that weekend home. About
800 residents call Log Cabin home.
The City of Mabank is one of those special places to live, work, play and grow your family. It’s pretty hard to find these places in our rapidly moving modern day society. Established in 1900, resulting from the arrival of the Texas and New
Orleans Railroad, Mabank is rich in history. With the wisdom and grace that only comes with time, Mabank maintains seasoned characteristics and values that are blended with progressive attitudes that encourage area wide growth, economic prosperity and an enhanced quality of life. Mabank enjoys it’s well deserved notoriety as the Friendliest Town on Cedar
Creek Lake and reputation for its “Can
Do” attitude.
Today, the North Central Texas Council of Governments (NCTCOG) estimates Mabank to have a population of approximately 3,250 people and a growth rate of nearly five (5%) a year. Located adjacent to the northern portion of Cedar
Creek Lake, the City is a full partner in the economic vibrancy of the lake area market and economic region comprised of over 60,000 people. The continued growth of Mabank is due in part to its great location and convenience to everything afforded by major highways such as U.S. 175 and Texas State Highway
198 that come to and through the City.
These roads position Mabank as a primary entrance into the Cedar Creek Lake area, as well as, allowing easy one hour access to the major airports, employment centers and services of the Dallas and Tyler metropolitan areas. Significant hospital/ health care facilities are nearby, only 30 minutes away, in Athens and Kaufman,
Texas. Immediately accessible emergency clinic facilities are located right next door to Mabank in its neighbor city. But when you arrive in Mabank, you’re likely to want to stay or come back and visit.
The City of Mabank, with its progressive City Council, offers an excellent
10
business climate and a full range of public services including central water and sewer plus exceptionally equipped/qualified police and fire departments. You’ll find nationally and regionally based light manufacturing companies, commercial retail stores, restaurants, historic Market
Street and its’ shops and the beautiful new
Comfort Suites Hotel with corporate/ community meeting facilities. Residents of Mabank and the surrounding area enjoy Tri-County Library on Market Street and the exceptional schools, all achieving
“Exemplary Status”, provided through the Mabank Independent School District (MISD). Local youth organizations provide opportunities for children to participate in little league baseball, soccer, football and other activities at Mabank’s interconnected park system including
George Watts Park, the 24,000 square foot under roof Mabank Pavilion and the
Andrew Gibbs Memorial Rodeo Arena.
There is always room for fun and events.
Speaking of fun, Mabank presently hosts four major events per year. These events are enjoyed by all area wide residents and draw thousands of visitors to
Mabank and the lake area. Beginning with the first Saturday in May, the Cedar Creek
Lake Car Show and Kiwanis Krawfish Boil happens at the Mabank Pavilion, followed three weeks later by the Cedar Creek Lake
Festival of the Arts held on historic Market Street in downtown Mabank. Towards the end of June, you won’t want to miss the annual Mabank Western Week and
Rodeo at the Andrew Gibbs Memorial
Rodeo Arena and Mabank Pavilion. October is the month for the Mabank “Fall
Affair” where local businesses, the school system and community organizations get creative as they paint and decorate round and square hay bales in the spirit of Autumn, the Halloween and Thanksgiving season. This event, unique to Mabank, is highlighted at the end of October by the judged cash prize awards for hay bale art held in conjunction with the “Trick or
Treat in Mabank” children’s program at the Mabank Pavilion. December brings the Christmas season. Holiday banners wish you a Merry Christmas along the major roads, hay bales become Mr. &
Mrs. Claus, polar bears, snowmen and manger scenes. Market
Street is dressed in sparkling lights and the Mabank
Christmas Parade of Homes happens the first weekend in December. Then on
11
the second weekend of the month, the
Mabank Old Fashioned Christmas is held on Market Street. Everyone enjoys the electric train display in city hall, Christmas story telling, carolers, ornament decorating, hay rides and of course, the arrival of Santa.
Discover Mabank. You will see that over 100 years of tradition and progress founded on faith, family friendship and future creates a quality life style that is hard to beat. Enjoy all of Mabank and everything it has to offer. Become a part of our All American Town.
only eight high schools statewide to be cited for its career and college preparatory programs.
Proud of its history, members of the historical society published a historical view of the town in 2009 and plans are moving forward with the construction of a museum.
An active chamber of commerce hosts the popular and much anticipated Cornbread Festival every spring, putting small town camaraderie on display.
The town started when Widow Irvine built a gristmill near here while this land prehistoric carved heads, known as the
“Malakoff Men,” found in the excavation of a gravel pit in 1929. The find is expected to form the center piece of the new museum.
Lured by the quiet country life, strong feeling of community and low property costs, many people in recent years have chosen to build their small businesses here.
Due to the remote location, people are finding their nice little cottage in the country or luxurious lake-front home in a gated community in the small town of
Malakoff. Some of the nicest and most exclusive lakeside properties on Cedar
Creek Reservoir are located in or close to Malakoff.
Gaining recognition as one of the best antique communities in East Texas,
Malakoff ’s growing number of antique malls and markets are bringing visitors from all over.
Malakoff is attracting new businesses every day, and it has some really great eating places. It is a town where old and new blend together to make a charming town with a place in the 21st century.
Whether you’re raising a family, looking for the perfect retirement spot, opening a business, or enjoying the incredible recreational opportunities such as golf, boating or fishing, Malakoff may be the place for you.
(From The Monitor Discover Magazine)
At the junction of State Highways 31 and 198, Malakoff is located in western
Henderson County. Sixty miles south of
Dallas and eight miles west of Athens, on the peaceful, southern side of Cedar Creek
Lake, lies a little town boasting the spirit of true small-town life.
With a population of 2,356, Malakoff has done some growing over the years. It has several restaurants, the Red Waller
Library, convenient shopping and a progressive school district.
Students at Malakoff ISD’s two elementary schools have repeatedly had a high percentage of students performing at commendable levels on the state’s knowledge and skills tests (TAKS), and most recently, the high school was one of still belonged to Mexico. Folks settled around the mill. The town was called
Caney Creek or Mitchum at various times. The community took on its Russian name after a town with the same name that was in the news at that time (during the Crimean War), at the suggestion of the postmaster. Malakoff is one of only a few towns in Texas that have a Russian name.
Mining became a huge industry in this town when, in 1912, lignite coal was discovered. In 1920, the Malakoff Fuel
Company was the largest industry for miles around, with more than 600 men employed.
In response to the availability of coal, the Texas Power & Light Company built a power generating plant in nearby
Trinidad.
During the 1930s, Malakoff was recognized for the discovery of three large

Whether it is lakefront, off water or acreage, the City of Payne Springs has it.
Located on the east side of Cedar
Creek Lake, Payne Springs is the ideal location to enjoy great sunsets. With a diverse population consisting of full-time and weekend residents, Payne Springs is the ideal lake area location. A large majority of our residents live in lakefront communities that provide excellent access to the many water activities on Cedar
Creek Lake.
Off water activities such as golf and tennis are nearby, with a wide variety of restaurants in the area. Serviced by the highly rated Payne Springs Volunteer Fire
Department and an excellent municipal
Police Department, Payne Springs is an ideal place to live and raise a family.
Links from Hwy. 198 to major highways in all directions make commercial strengths and accessibility added pluses for continued economic growth. With easy access to the metroplex, residents can commute to Dallas for work, or just take an easy ride to shopping and restaurants.

The unique convergence of State
Highways 334 and 274, Farm-to-Market
85 and Pritchett, Kelly and Veterans Lanes in Henderson County gives this growing city its appealing geographic name. A widened SH 334 and reworked intersection at SH 334 and SH 274 gives the town an open, uncluttered atmosphere for easy access to the lake.
Seven Points is the first lake-front city coming from Dallas/Fort Worth, giving it the gateway status.
The U.S. Census Bureau estimates a 2008 population of 1,323 for Seven
Points. The city is served by both the
Kemp Independent School District in some areas and Mabank ISD in others.
Both districts offer good educational opportunities for the family and their children.
Boasting a wide variety of quality restaurants, it is rapidly becoming known as the “food bowl,” as well as recreation and activity center. Seven Points is home to Mexican food, burgers, steaks, catfish, chicken wings, drive-ins and barbecue.
Whatz Up, a family entertainment center, on SH 334 is fast growing a reputation for the place to hold paintball tournaments and fun, family gatherings.
Besides paintball, extensive video arcade and batting cages, the center features a fast and exciting go-cart track. Plans for its expansion are being carried out.
Other family-oriented activities in
Seven Points include The Library at Cedar Creek Lake for ongoing educational activities for adults and students alike, art exhibits, small trade shows, job fairs, plus an excellent selection of books, videos and reference material.
The Library at Cedar Creek Lake is the most-used library in the vicinity, with a conference room that stays busy year round, hosting book clubs, community organizations such as the Daughters of the American Revolution, and many other groups.
The beautiful building has computer access and is a very modern facility, with lots of peaceful nooks and crannies to peruse your favorite author or to study.
One of the new bonus features at The
Library is a Wi-Fi hotspot. Now those with notebook computers with Wi-Fi connectability can surf the web.
For shopping, there is a growing list of retail stores and an eclectic gathering of secondhand shops grouped in two flea markets for uncovering affordable treasures.
A Brookshire’s grocery, located near the downtown intersection, serves as a frequent gathering place for residents and visitors. The town also offers several
13
banks, a David’s Grocery Store and several convenience stores.
A big plus is the Kemp Sub-Post Office. The city recently renegotiated a contract with the U.S. Postal Service which assures the area will be served for years to come. It remains one of the busiest post offices in the area.
Seven Points is poised for increased growth. It has many beautiful upscale subdivisions located on the western shore of the lake.
The city and western side of the lake are served by the only water company that is rated “superior” in the entire area, the West Cedar Creek Municipal Utility
District and annually receives awards for good-tasting water.
With a fine community of churches and a welcoming populace, it is the ideal place for retiring or raising a family.
Tucked away on the wooded side of
Cedar Creek Lake near Malakoff lies the quiet little town of Star Harbor. Surrounded by an abundance of towering trees and occasional wildlife, the over
400 residents of Star Harbor enjoy their serene setting.
Citizens of this small municipality take great pride in its appearance. This well kept community became incorporated in
April of 1970.
Operating as a ‘Type B’ General Law city, they have a mayor and five council members serving as their governing officials. A portion of responsibility lies as overseers of community projects such as maintenance of the 8 miles of streets that serve residents. To help maintain their high standards and quality of life, they have built a new city owned water system for their populace. Having a police officer offers reassurance to citizens.
Other amenities include a city hall, and beautiful 9-hole golf course complete with a club house and golf pro who offers lessons to beginners and golf enthusiasts.
One of the most picturesque views of
Cedar Creek Lake can be found standing on the shores of Star Harbor…if peace, quiet and solitude are what you’re searching for.
The town of Tool, originally known by some as “Hogs Fork”, was settled in 1850 and officially incorporated the city limits of the City of Tool in March of 1969.
Today, the City is a Type A General Law municipality, consisting of a Mayor and five City Council members. Regular City
Council meetings are held on the third
Thursday of each month at 6:00 p.m..
The meetings are held at Oran White
Civic Center, located adjacent to Tool
City Hall. The Oran White Civic Center is named after Oran White, the first mayor elected by the citizens of the city. The
Civic Center is available for rental twelve months of the year.
The City of Tool boasts more than 14 miles of shoreline on Cedar Creek Lake, one of the most beautiful in East Texas.

Surrounding the intersection of State
Highways 31 and 274 and extending to just past the Cedar Creek Lake spillway,
Trinidad is a small community about
65 miles from Dallas, 18 miles from
Athens, 23 miles from Kaufman and 26 miles from Corsicana. Its population is estimated at 1,109.
Its history dates back to the ice age, and sits right on the massive Trinity River.
Fossil stones have been discovered in and around the community, proving to be some of the oldest artifacts ever found in
North America.
In modern times, the discovery of lignite coal made it the place for a power generation plant. You can still see the stacks from the coal-burning works that once served the area. Later, it was converted to a steam-operated plant.
Known for several of its lake area developments, such as Key Ranch Estates,
Trinidad continues to improve its services for residents, and recently upgraded its water system to meet the town’s growing needs.
Trinidad’s school system captures the flavor of yesteryear’s community school and is within a short drive of nearby Trinity Valley Community College in Athens,
Tyler Junior College in Tyler and Navarro
College in Corsicana.
Residents of Trinidad enjoy easy access to larger communities such as Athens,
Tyler, Dallas, Corsicana, Hillsboro and
Waco, as well as Cedar Creek Lake, and have the security of services from local police and fire department.
It is a place one can sit on a porch in safety and enjoy the natural beauty the area offers because of its location by the beautiful bluffs of the Trinity River and close proximity to the lake.
A Shangri-La of the lake area with a yesteryear feel, Trinidad still offers the peace and quiet that a lovely small town can offer to the weary soul.

Located on State Highway 334 between Gun Barrel City and Seven Points,
Tom Finley Park is a lovely day use waterfront park that features upgraded picnic facilities, grills, a public boat ramp and a large, covered pavilion that’s perfect for parties, reunions and outdoor meetings on pretty days.
Originally known as Chamber Isle, the park was created in the early 1980’s through a long-term lease agreement with

CEDAR CREEK LAKE
East Texas Medical Center
Regional Healthcare System
If you want to see Laurie Miller get excited, ask her about how ETMC Cedar
Creek Lake serves the community.
“This facility is hugely important to people in the lake area,” said Miller, the regional director responsible for the emergency department and outpatient services at ETMC CCL. “People depend on us to meet their medical needs in so many ways – and not just through the ER and our radiology and lab departments, but with our doctors and the Olympic
Center as well.”
Housed in a gleaming, 30,000-squarefoot glass building, ETMC Cedar Creek
Lake offers 24-hour, physician-directed emergency services, backed by diagnostic radiology and lab services.
“We average over 2,000 patients a month in our emergency department,” said Miller. “In radiology, they average about 2,200 procedures a month, and the lab averages a whopping 6,000 tests a month.”
Miller explained that the radiology and laboratory departments serve not only patients who are seen in the ER and clinic, but a very large outlying area as well.
“People we see for lab or radiology work are coming not only from Henderson County but places likes Van Zandt and Kaufman counties as well,” she said.
Sharon Dunn, RN, BSN, is the emergency department director for ETMC
CCL, and Dr. David Hoang is the medical director.
“We see plenty of coughs, cuts and broken bones,” said Dunn. “But we also see much more serious injuries, as well as people who have suffered from a stroke, cardiac arrest or other life-threatening incidents. EMS brings critical patients in the area to us first, and we stabilize and then transfer them to the appropriate facility.”
Excellent personnel are also backed up by excellent technology, such as an open
MRI scanner and a 64-slice CT scanner.
The open MRI has no enclosures, and the 64-slice CT produces amazingly detailed images of the body’s anatomy with unmatched speed. It takes a mere 10 seconds to perform an entire body scan.

Creek Lake is made up of three parts: the
24-hour emergency department, a clinic for doctors to see patients during the week, and an Olympic Center for rehabilitation.
The clinic at ETMC
CCL currently houses a member of the ETMC First Physicians practice, Dr. Susan McMullen. McMullen, a family practitioner, sees patients in the clinic along with other community doctors who office there. Dr. William
Giles and Dr. You Choi, both internal medicine specialists with ETMC First
Physicians, also see patients nearby. A physicians’ office building is currently under construction on the ETMC CCL campus
The Olympic Center inside the complex also offers state-of-the-art rehabilitation services. A 20-by-40-foot pool is used for aquatherapy and aerobic exercise.
There is cardiopulmonary rehab space for patients who recently underwent some type of cardiac procedure. Occupational and physical therapy is provided as well.
The Olympic Center offers use of the facilities through membership to the general public.

Trinity Valley Community College has come a long way since classes first began in borrowed space during the fall of 1946.
The college has seen tremendous growth the past two years and is now serving more than 8,000 students at campuses in Athens, Palestine, Terrell, and Kaufman.
Today, students don’t even need to be in the classroom to complete coursework.
Many are opting to enroll in Internet-
34 based classes, and TVCC has become a leading provider of classes through the
Virtual College of Texas.
In addition, classrooms equipped for videoconferencing allow professors to teach classes simultaneously on two different campuses or even at area high schools and universities that are part of the Northeast Texas Network.
In addition, TVCC instructors have developed numerous hybrid courses — classes where a student completes part of the workload online and attends lass for the other part of the course. Hybrid
Classes combine the advantages of faceto-face interaction with the convenience of the Internet.
However, the technology age hasn’t eliminated the need for desks and chairs.
More students than ever are attending classes at TVCC’s four campuses.
Over the past 15 years, the institution
has constructed a new academic building, residence hall, cafeteria, bookstore and learning resource center at the Athens campus and a learning resource center at the Terrell Campus. Recently, the Palestine campus was remodeled and now boasts new science labs and a redesigned floor plan.
The newest facility at TVCC-Athens is expected to open by fall 2011. A threestory, 48,000 square-foot residential hall is currently being constructed on the northwest side of the campus.
The 150-bed facility will offer students a greater chance to be a part of on-campus life.
TVCC is dedicated to improving the quality of education and the richness of campus life for all its students.
By offering additional programs - such as the electronic media courses now offered in
Athens - and new activities such as the new Lady Cardinal volleyball program, TVCC is working to meet all of the needs of its students.
TVCC serves a large cross-section of the community’s population. The “traditional” 18-year-old recent high school graduate accounts for about 10 percent of enrollment. More than half of the students are at least 22 years of age, making for a large adult population at the TVCC campuses.
About 85 Percent of students come from the college’s service area, which includes all or part of Anderson, Henderson,
Kaufman, Van Zandt and Rains counties.
TVCC offers a range of academic and occupational programs for students who want to complete two years of college before transferring to a university or who need one or two years of training before beginning a career in a trade such as cosmetology, horticulture or ranch management.
In addition to regular courses, TVCC also offers non-credit continuing education classes that range from “fun” courses such as ceramics and cake decorating to career-oriented classes designed to help students become proficient in areas such as computer literacy, real estate and forklift operation.
The college’s Adult Education Department offers adult students special, and sometimes free, services to help them gain job skills or knowledge needed to help them get a college education.
The Health Science Center in Kaufman houses many of the institution’s health occupations programs, which include
35
Associate Degree Nursing,
Vocational Nursing, Surgical Technology, Emergency
Medical Technician, and
Patient Care Technology.
The campus is also a distance education site for the University of Texas at
Arlington’s Bachelor of Science in Nursing program.
TVCC officials are also planning to begin construction of a new Health
Science Center in the coming months. The facility will be located adjacent to the current HSC and will provide the needed space for the college’s expanding medical profession programs.
Ther’s also plenty of time for fun at
TVCC. The Student Activities Department calendar is filled with special events, tournaments and student trips. Students involved in the various student organizations are active in community events and serve as tutors and mentors to younger students in area public schools.
TVCC is also the home of champion athletic teams. Teams from the college have brought home 15 national titles in football, basketball and cheerleading since the late 1980s. The institution participates in the Southwest Junior College Football
Conference in football and in the Region
XIV Athletic conference in men’s and women’s basketball.
Performance groups are also an important part of the TVCC culture, including award-winning marching and jazz bands and a choral group which offers students performance opportunities in various musical styles.
This year, the Cardette dance team is celebrating its
50th anniversary with a variety of special events. The team has served as ambassadors for
TVCC at events across the nation and around the globe.
The TVCC faculty, administration and staff are deeply involved in the community. College employees are members of area civic organizations and economic development boards. The college also provides many events for the community, including concerts, plays, forums and job fairs.
For more information about TVCC,
