Term 2 Week 7 1 June 2010 A message from our Principal . . . . . . Welcome to the first day of winter. While we all needed a little rain, we do hope the wet weather of the last couple of weeks is not here to stay. Thankfully, the weather for Life in Valley Day, could not be faulted and we all enjoyed the warm sunshine and blue skies. This event gets better and bigger every year and it is great to see the diversity and special character of this area. There are a number of people who put a lot of work into making this day a success and I thank each of you for your time and effort. Our book character parade during Book Week is another special HVS event and congratulations must go to the students and staff who made such a fantastic effort with their costumes. Our teachers are now busy writing progress reports for each student. This year we have made a number of changes to our reports to align with the National Standards. Our progress report will target the key areas of reading, writing and maths, while our end of year report will include all learning areas. We will be seeking feed back from parents/caregivers on the new format. In the meantime, please be extra kind to your child’s teacher as these new reports are a lot of work! Maree Stavert Principal LIFE IN THE VALLEY DAY Once again this was a roaring success, helped along by a brilliantly fine day. Crowds were steady throughout the day and everyone enjoyed the opportunity to find out more about what goes on in our valley. Huge thanks must go to our fantastic Tony who did so much work behind the scenes getting everything ready. Special thanks also to Trudy Calder and her Green Team ambassadors who did a wonderful job showcasing our environmental initiatives. Thanks also to: everyone who joined in our working bee planting our Home and School team for super soup and satisfying sausages all of you who donated beautiful baking for us to sell, the standard was superb! our terrific teachers for working on a Saturday the Henderson Valley Residents and Ratepayers Association for their great organisation all the community groups who helped make the day such a success Please visit our website for more photos. PROJECT TWIN STREAMS AND HENDERSON VALLEY SCHOOL Present ‘THE WALL’ A collaborative arts project sponsored by Project Twin Streams in recognition of the part Henderson Valley School plays in supporting the restoration of the Opanuku Stream banks. Based on the work of the visionary artist Frederick Hundertwasser, THE WALL will be constructed of adobe and recycled bricks and bottles. Many other ideas that germinated out of creative brainstorming exercise with PTS arts coordinator Kristin Kell and children from the school will also be incorporated. THE WALL will be constructed from June to October 2010 and will enclose our new Native Tree Identification Trail. The aim is to involve all the children of the school and community. HOW CAN YOU HELP? Non Monetary DONATIONS needed now If you have usable left-overs of Cement ☺ Re Rod ☺ Concrete Mixers (loan only) That you are willing to donate. Please contact Kristin Kell 027 4951019 kahupoint@actrix.co.nz SCHOOL BROADBAND CONNECTION Like many households in this area the speed of our broadband connection is a constant frustration to staff and students. Our school is 5.2km from the exchange in Henderson and this means our download speed runs at about 0.1MBPS, which is extremely slow. This has a huge impact on our ability to provide our students with quality e-learning opportunities. SCHOOL LUNCH SURVEY We are currently considering a proposal from the local Flax Café to supply school lunches for our students a couple of days a week. They have developed a healthy, affordable, tasty menu that includes hot and cold food. This would be a big step for our school and we are carefully thinking about all the implications. It would be great to get some feed-back from parents and whanau, so please take the time to complete the slip below and return it to school. ———————————————————————————— School Lunches at HVS Yes, we would make use of a school lunch service at the school. No, we would not be interested in buying school lunches. Any comments?........................................................................... ……………………………………………………………………....... To solve the problem, Telecom says they would need to install a new roadside cabinet closer to the school at a cost of around $150,000. They have no plans to do this. With all the government promises to provide ultra-fast broadband for schools, we have decided it is time to let others know of our particular issue. It is extremely unusual for a school of 400+ students and staff to have to contend with this sort of broadband speed. We are currently writing to our local MP and relevant Cabinet Ministers to share our frustrations. If anyone in the community has any ‘connections’ or ideas we would really appreciate your support.
