Computer Security 2009 The Internet is a Very Bad Place Aare Kirna Webmaster of Look@World Foundation www.arvutikaitse.ee We have All Seen This Why do They do That? • Cyber-crime is business not hooliganism • First and foremost they are after bank details • Your personal data will also do • Your computer is a valuable resource: – For hiding the tracks of their mean tricks – For sending spam – For attacking other computers – For distributing child pornography or pirate files Cyber-crime • The turnover in cyber crimes in the year 2006 could be compared to that of trafficking in persons (9-12 billion $) and the profits of cyber crimes could be compared to that of drug trafficking (3000%) • In 2006 3.24 million computer crimes was registered, that is one every 10 seconds • Experts believe that 90% of the crimes remain unregistered Crimes Related to Computer The Penal Code of the Republic of Estonia: • Child pornography - up to 3 years of imprisonment • Violation of confidentiality of messages – pecuniary punishment • Interference in computer data – up to 3 years of imprisonment • Dissemination of spyware, malware or computer viruses – up to 3 years of imprisonment • Computer-related fraud – up to 5 years of imprisonment • Preparation of computer-related crime – up to 3 years of imprisonment • Unlawful use of computer system – up to 3 years of imprisonment • Computer terrorism – up to life imprisonment Malware • PandaLabs get 3000 samples of malicious codes per day • F-Secure counted 500,000 units of malware from 1986 to the end of 2007 • Malware constructors (MPack, Rock Phish) and poly and metamorphic malware are to blame • A constructor costs 50-1000$ Increasing Trend • Even 11-year-olds get caught • Mainly looking for pirated games • Viruses to be disseminated in social networks • Sharing attacking techniques and credit card numbers • 15-year-old Michael Calce, a.k.a. MafiaBoy • was charged with committing DDoSattacks against Yahoo!, Dell, eBay and CNN • he got 8 months of minimum security prison, a year of conditional sentence and limitations on his use of the Internet Experience • Filters do not work! • Prohibitions without explanations do not work! • No-one else is responsible for your child! • Personal role models are contagious! • Laws must be abided by (you yourself too)! • Be there when you are needed! • Learn yourself too! • Just ask and you will be helped!
