nightmare. Come listen as Connie Mattera reviews facial
anatomy and covers the clinical presentation and management
of LeFort, mandibular, nasal bone, “Blow-out” and tripod
fractures. In addition, she will address the challenge of
dental and soft tissue injuries and provide some tips to
manage these patients in the out-of-hospital environment.

Sizzle or Fizzle: A Recipe for Leadership,
Country Style
Many believe the road to success belongs to the individual
that can make the bottom line boom. This is simply not true.
Growing organizations realize that to get to the top floor of
success requires you to take the stairs. The future belongs to
the listeners, the communicators, and those passionate and
dedicated leaders who not only have an enormous amount
of energy, but who can energize those around them.

Mending A Broken Heart
This presentation addresses the mechanism of injury,
clinical presentation, and medical management of
pericardial tamponade, blunt cardiac injury, and valvular
injury. Each injury will be discussed using a case study
format. Current evidence-based guidelines for treating
each of these entities will be included in the presentation.

Geriatric Depression and Suicide
The elderly are more at risk for depression and suicide due to the
many losses they experience. There is much that can be done from
the standpoint of prevention and treatment. These efforts require a
partnership between the patient, physician, and yes, the prehospital
care provider. This class will help you identify those clinical
characteristics of depression and suicide for those elderly patients
who are at risk and how to get them the help and hope they need.

BLS SESSION 1:30 pm - 5:00 pm
1:30 pm – 3:00 pm
Neuro Assessment in 5 Easy Steps
Accurately assessing the wondrous network of the nervous
system in the field provides essential information about a patient’s
neurological status and establishes a benchmark against which later
responses are measured. If neuro exams have made you
"nervous", come explore a fast and easy way to obtain
a pertinent history, evaluate mental status, test cranial
nerves, and measure motor and sensory integrity. You'll
gain confidence and expertise using nothing more than
a penlight, cotton swabs, and critical thinking skills.
Connie Mattera, RN, MS, EMT-P

3:15 pm – 5:00 pm
Correlating Mechanism of Injury to
Physical Assessment of Trauma Patient
This presentation discusses the kinematics of trauma
and how specific mechanisms result in a predictable
constellation of injury. Transmission of energy in blunt
force trauma as well as penetrating trauma will be explored.
Case studies will be used to emphasize key points.

chest pain and discover when it is truly an emergency.

Lord, What Fools These Mortals Be
William Shakespeare must have been a third rider on a
horse driven ambulance at one time or another. How
else could he have come up with such a solemn yet
appropriately humorous opinion of his fellow man?
Every ER or patient’s house we enter offers a goldmine
of life in its extreme – most often tragic, sometimes
funny, but all there to be borrowed. Finding humor in
events others may find appalling is an art that must be
often learned and earned by those first entering the field
of emergency health care. But after the jokes and tricks
are played, how does one still find the grace in their
patient’s face? Join Steve as we explore this balance
of compassion and humor including the number one
rule: Laugh at yourself… before everyone else can.
