Introduction to Marketing
Richard E. Montague
Course Outline / Class Expectations - Fall 2015
The Introduction to Marketing course is a Career and Technical Education (CTE) class. The goal of this
class is to introduce you to the art and practice of marketing in its many forms. Additionally, this class will
provide a foundation for further, advanced studies in the marketing profession and inform a potential career
path for the student.
This is a Project Based Learning (PBL) class. Once class lectures are accomplished and daily learning
goals displayed and understood, students will be required to research, assemble and produce both written
and oral reports on a variety of commercial and industrial marketing topics. Often, members of our Vashon
business community call upon this marketing class to support promotional campaigns that, in turn, help
support, inform and entertain our community. Similarly, on-campus organizations request our assistance
during the development of events and special activities.
You will learn how marketing permeates our daily lives, and how we, as consumers, are influenced by
marketing techniques and their execution in the variety of current media delivery systems. An important
goal in this class will be to become critical thinkers when confronted with the steady stream of marketing
messages presented to us each day
The Introduction to Marketing course will continue your Habits of Mind learning and will integrate each of
the 16 Habits of Mind within the course curriculum.
Together, we will explore:
๏ Fundamentals of Marketing.
๏ Seven Core Marketing Functions.
๏ Marketing and the Marketing Concept.
๏ The Promotional Mix.
๏ Target Marketing.
๏ Influencer Marketing.
๏ Branding and Promotion
๏ The Art of the Ad Agency Pitch.
๏ Marketing Skills:
Communication Skills Oral Presentation
Interpersonal Skills
Technology for Marketing
Management Skills Collaborative Skills.
Field Trip
There will be one field trip off island during this semester. It has been confirmed and will occur on
November 18, 2015 and will help to break new ground in marketing strategies for both our class and our
very well known and gracious host organization. Permission forms will be sent home with each student and
must be returned by each student, signed by each student’s parent(s) in order for the student to participate

in this field trip. Before the trip, student teams will take on the task of creating a comparative analysis report
based on extensive research of four (4) organizations. These four organizations, including our host
organization for our field trip, all provide similar products and services. Our class team members will be
assigned specific research tasks and roles within each team. The project reports will be assembled in
Google Slides, shared with Mr. Montague and presented in class by each team over two days. These
project reports will then be submitted to our host organization for review one week before we undertake the
actual field trip.
Five chaperones are needed for this field trip, incidentally. If you’d care to join the class for what will be a
very cool field trip, please contact Mr. Montague: rmontague@vashonsd.org.
Grading
20% Homework Assignment
30% Project Work
20% Class / Team Participation
10% Quizzes and Tests
20% Teacher Evaluation (daily participation, attendance and demonstrating H.O.M.)
Class participation is integral to meeting course goals, and your participation is vital. To receive a score of
100% for participation, you must be present and actively engaged in class every day. The exception to this
is two (2) excused sick days. If you actively participate in individual, partner or team project work during
the entire period of each class, you will not lose any points. This means you actively participate and
contribute to your team toward the execution of a project. Each unexcused missed class day will count for
5 percentage points off of the participation grade.
Unexcused tardiness counts for 1 percentage point loss.
Percentage points lost for unexcused absences and tardiness cannot be made up. Most other lost
points may be made up before or after school, or with pre-approval, at home. Each 24 minute period of
extra time will be worth 1 percentage point toward your participation grade. Time can only be made up in
minimum increments of 24 minutes. No student will receive credit for this class if they have more than 12
absences. This can be appealed by writing a letter to Mr. Montague, but will only be considered for valid
excused absences that the student has made a good effort to make up in a timely manner.
TO SUMMARIZE: Your participation grade is worth 20% of your overall grade. You lose 5 (five)
participation points for each class day missed AFTER the first 2 (two) excused absences and 1
(one) point for unexcused tardiness. If you miss more that 12 (twelve) days, you will not receive
credit NO MATTER what grade you get unless you appeal to me.
I reserve the right to adjust participation scores up to plus or minus 25 percentage points based on
my perception of your contribution to projects, daily use of class time and exhibiting appropriate
Habits of Mind: Attending, Thinking Flexibly, Collaboration, Risking & Precision.
