Our Mission Above. Beyond. It’s our promise to you. It’s more than academics. And campus life. What brings students to Baylor University is a unique approach to higher education. Here, we balance faith and learning. That means we place as much importance on a rigorous curriculum and renowned professors as we do on personal growth, discovery and life outside of the classroom. We sum up this approach with two simple words: Above. Beyond. It’s our mission and our promise to you: professors who go above and beyond the syllabus. A student body that goes above and beyond to make you feel welcome. An education that goes above and beyond what you’ll find at other universities. This is a college experience that will thoroughly prepare you for the real world and get you on the path to excellence, enlightenment and achievement. That’s above and beyond. That’s Baylor. 2 3 Student Body One more reason to choose Baylor: Thousands of friendly faces. Something unusual happens when you first set foot on our campus. You become part of something bigger. As a Baylor student, you’ll spend plenty of time on campus and as a part of our community. But our classrooms don’t end there. They span around the globe. Through our study abroad and exchange programs, students are encouraged to explore and experience the world firsthand. Baylor’s International Student and Scholar Services provides our students with opportunities for a summer or a semester in one of more than 60 programs. Last year alone, more than 900 students traveled abroad for their studies. Argentina Austria Belize Brazil China Costa Rica Dominica East Africa England France Germany Great Britain Hong Kong Italy Mexico Netherlands Spain Why study abroad? “Study abroad changed my life and I constantly discover new ways in which it has impacted me. It is a tremendous opportunity that teaches life skills and makes you immediately self-reliant. In addition, I feel I can now adapt to any situation placed in front of me and am thankful for the comforts of home.” Sara Garrett University Scholar Class of ‘09 After choosing which college she would attend, Sara chose to become a University Scholar because she was interested in a number of areas of study; however, a grea t deal of her time was spent studying the Russian language. She participated in study abroad opportunities as a Critical Language Scholarship recipient. Students as dynamic as they are diverse. With students and faculty representing all different ethnicities, faiths and backgrounds, Baylor’s campus is rich in culture and character. We believe that our differences give us a chance to learn and grow. And that they give us a broader perspective. Each year, Baylor enrolls more than 400 students from 80 countries around the globe, enriching our campus with other cultures. Festivals and exhibits celebrating numerous heritages fill the University calendar. Guest lecturers from various countries also share their viewpoints with our faculty and students. 6 7 World-class Professors Meet our faculty. At Baylor, our world-class professors are as accessible as they are knowledgeable. Of course some classes are larger, but our average class size is 28. We believe the more students communicate with their professors, the more passionate they become. Their understanding of the curriculum is deeper. And their experiences are richer. You’ll find active mentoring and topnotch scholars across campus with a strong core curriculum connecting each piece of your University experience. Our faculty come from right here in Texas as well as from across the country and around the world to give that personal attention to our students. They are leaders in their respective fields and were all drawn to Baylor for its strong spiritual and intellectual community. A community that strives to make a difference in the lives of students. 8 *Based on “The Student Satisfaction Inventory” (SSI), a national survey that has been administered to more than two million college students in the past ten years. In fact, you’re just as likely to find them debating with students in the classroom as chatting over a cup of coffee. It’s this personal attention and approachable nature that sets us apart. And it’s one of the reasons the Student Satisfaction Inventory, a national survey, found that Baylor students are more satisfied with their undergraduate experience than students at many other private institutions.* What brought you here? public universities, I “Aft er teaching for 32 years in igued with the vision came to Baylor because I was intr academic excellence, of being a Christian university of n to be synergistic where faith and learning are see rather than antithetical. t values student/ I was also drawn by a culture tha litated, not only faculty relationships that are faci many other special by small class sizes, but also by rning Groups and faculty programs such as Engaged Lea that wer e designed who live in residential communities to cultivat e this culture. keen to use the gifts, Maybe most importantly, I was l experience that talents, training and professiona scientist to develop God has given me as a mat erials on improving the a resear ch program that focuses ple in underdeveloped quality of life for the poorest peo countries. As a Big 12 university, we want to achieve top-ranked status. And we have. A school-record 14 of Baylor’s 18 teams played in the postseason during the 2008-2009 academic year. We also are home to a pair of NCAA individual champions, 20-plus All-Americans and five Big 12 championship teams. But that’s not our only goal—our athletes are also classroom champions. Since the beginning of the Big 12 Conference in 1996, Baylor has led the conference in graduation rates five times and finished second three times. More than 4,000 of our student-athletes have made the Big 12 Commissioner’s Honor Roll over the last 13 years, including a school-record 462 honorees during the 2008-2009 academic year. They serve the Waco community through campus-wide activities like Steppin’ Out, a biannual event where students, staff and faculty help those in need. Our students are also involved in Habitat for Humanity, mission work and more. In fact, Baylor established the nation’s first Habitat for Humanity campus chapter in 1987 and has since helped build 61 homes. Putting our faith into action is an important component of life at Baylor. You’ll find our students all over the world engineering bridges, helping to grow tourism in countries such as Armenia, building power generators to bring electricity to Honduran villages, and bringing fresh water to rural villages. They apply their faith and knowledge toward serving others. And learn lessons that will remain with them for a lifetime. Why did you join Engineers with a Mission? I looked into several different organizations that already did engineering work in developing countries at other universities, but none were faith-based. One even had a clause saying you couldn’t go in their name with a religious purpose. I know engineering is my calling from God — it’s what I’m supposed to do and I wanted to find a way to start using it for ministry and mission work. 18 Leah Richter, Class of ’08 19 An insider’s guide. Located between Austin and Dallas/Fort Worth, the Waco area has a population of 230,000, with 5 million visitors making their way here annually. With a small-town feel and friendly people, there’s plenty to do and see in this college town. But where are the popular hangouts? What’s out there to do? For fun and de-stressing, the McLane Student Life Center (SLC) is the place to begin: racquetball to rock climbing, weight training to Bearobics, basketball to swimming, you can find something to do. From there, discover our intramural fields, Bear Trail, tennis courts, and Student Life activities designed for you and your new friends. For those who enjoy the great outdoors, Cameron Park offers disc golf and plenty of trails along the Brazos River for hiking, biking or dog walking. Go canoeing on the Brazos River or get out on Lake Waco and spend some time on the water, or relax on the greens at one of several area golf courses. But wait, there’s more! For restaurants, boutiques, and night life, students head to our revitalized warehouse district which continues to flourish. You’ll find Broadway-style shows at the Hippodrome Theater, free concerts in Indian Spring Park, and numerous museums on- and off-campus. When you arrive at Baylor, we want you to get out and explore your community. You’ll be delighted by what you find. It might be a quiet coffee shop perfect for reading or a barbecue restaurant that will become a regular stop. We know you’ll find your personal local favorites. 20 21 History Lesson A rich past. Baylor University was chartered in 1845 by the Republic of Texas. Today, Baylor is the state’s oldest institution of higher learning in continuous operation and the largest Baptist university in the world. To say our history is rich is a bit of an understatement. Since receiving our charter in 1845, we’ve achieved plenty of “firsts” and established more than a few traditions. Traditions that we continue to embrace and celebrate today. A richer future. In addition to honoring our past, Baylor is committed to future growth and development. We’ve established Baylor 2012, a 10-year plan to ensure that Baylor remains on the cutting edge of research, technology and innovation. Since the program’s launch, we’ve completed the Baylor Sciences Building, built residential communities and opened The Highers Athletics Complex and the Simpson Athletics and Academic Center. Our faculty and staff are key to Baylor 2012 and are discovering new knowledge through research every day. In fact, the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching classification system has designated Baylor as a campus with “high research activity.” Our students are remarkable in their own right as well; 12 of them have been awarded the prestigious Fulbright Scholarship over the past three years. 22 Baylor 2012. It means positive changes in our future. At Baylor, we embrace where we’ve been and look forward to • Establishing an environment where learning can flourish • Creating a truly residential campus • Developing a world-class faculty • Attracting and supporting a top-tier student body • Initiating outstanding new academic programs • Guiding all students through academic and student life programs • Providing outstanding academic facilities • Constructing useful and aesthetically pleasing physical spaces • Enhancing involvement of the entire Baylor family • Building with integrity a winning athletic tradition in all sports • Emphasizing global education • Achieving a $2 billion endowment 23 Our tr aditions We have many traditions. And just as many reasons to celebrate. It’s no secret. The Baylor community is an active one. Whether we’re celebrating Homecoming with a bonfire or parade, a day free from classes at Diadeloso (the Day of the Bear), or taking part in All University Sing, you’ll find students, staff and faculty all joining in the festivities. As an incoming freshman, you’ll be instantly immersed in Baylor’s culture during Welcome Week. You’ll meet other students and be introduced to the campus. Many freshmen also join the Baylor Line, a group of students who show their spirit on the sidelines of all football games held at Baylor’s Floyd Casey Stadium. The point is, there’s always something to get involved with at Baylor. From Big 12 athletics to intramural sports to outreach activities to Slime Night, we’re steeped in tradition. And we invite you to take part in all of them. Another way Baylor embraces its students is through its traditions. Here are just a few: • All University Sing: a giant campus-wide talent competition •Steppin’ Out: community service on a grand scale twice a year • Diadeloso: the Day of the Bear (our mascot) helps students de-stress before spring finals • Serenade: men’s residence halls sing at the women’s halls, with the women returning the compliment later that week • Native American Pow Wow: our Native American Student Organization welcomes 4,000 people annually to this event • Homecoming: the alums return and current students showcase their care for the university in the parade, Pigskin Revue and Freshman Mass Meeting • Christmas on Fifth Street: music, lights and fellowship to begin the season • Dr Pepper Hour: free ice cream floats on Tuesday afternoons in the Bill Daniel Student Center 24 25 Baylor facts Major Decisions Colleges and degree programs Our offerings are as diverse as our student body.
