Cosmetology Instructor Room 901 Class Meeting Times: Year 3 and 4 Dianne Martin diannemartin@newportrischools.org 401-847-6532 x2901 www.npsri.net 8:47am-9:55am Year 1 and 2 11:36am or 12:52pm Program Description: The primary purpose of this cosmetology course is to train and prepare the student in the basic manipulative skills, safety judgments, work-readiness habits, communication skills and desirable attitudes necessary to obtain licensure and for competency in entry-level positions in cosmetology or related fields. Objectives: Upon completion of the course requirements, the determined graduate will be able to: 1. Project a positive attitude and a sense of personal integrity and self-confidence 2. Practice effective communication skills 3. Respect the need to deliver worthy service for value received in an employer/employee relationship 4. Perform basic manipulative skills in the areas of hairstyling and shaping, hair coloring, texture services, scalp and hair conditioning, skin and make-up, and manicure/pedicure procedures 5. Apply learned theory, SAFETY, technical information and related matter to assure sound judgments, decisions, and procedures To ensure continued career success, the students will continue to learn new and current information related to skills, trends and methods for career development in cosmetology and related fields. References: Milady’s Standard Textbook of Cosmetology and Workbook plus a comprehensive library of references, periodicals, books, and audio/video/DVD are available to support the course of study and supplement student training. Format: The practical education is provided through a sequential set of learning steps that address specific tasks essential for preparation for state board examination, graduation and entry level job skills. Clinic equipment, implements and products are comparable to those used in the industry. Every student is instructed as to the usefulness of the creative and productive career activities. The course is presented through lessons that reflect educational methods presented by lectures, demonstration s, student practice, guest speakers, math related problem solving and research/writing projects. Grading Scale: Students are assigned theory and practical experiences required to complete course. Theory is assessed after each unit of study along with continued evaluation of the practical assignments that mirror standards established by the national and state licensing boards and Cosmetology Skills Competency Evaluation Criteria. Students must maintain grade average of 70% in order to sit for board exam. Students must make up any missed written or test assignments. Put all book bags, cell phones, IPods and coats in your class closet 3. *WEAR your lab coat and closed shoes everyday and at all times This Is a state LAW! 4. Absolutely NO GUM CHEWING, food or drinks! 5. Raise your hand when you would like to speak 6. Clean up after yourself 7. Be a team player 8. All books, workbooks, notebooks and other learning tools must be in class everyday! * ALL clothing should reflect professional attire (NO pajamas, slippers, flip-flops. Student are given ample time to complete workbook and all other assignments in class. Students are expected to be responsible for test preparation.
