The DVDs coordinate with each of the six parts of the Milady’s Standard Cosmetology textbook, making classroom instruction come alive. A “map” of each DVD is included in this guide to help you use the DVD Series with the textbook. The guide also explains the many features and benefits of the DVDs and offers suggestions and advice for use in the classroom. Our hope is that you’ll find the DVDs enriching for your students and convenient for you, and we encourage you to share your suggestions for making them even better the next time around. This is a new technology that Milady is pleased to introduce, and we offer it to you in the spirit of support for you and your students. Sincerely, Dawn Gerrain President, Milady Delmar Learning, a Thomson company dawn.gerrain@delmar.com Milady’s Standard Cosmetology DVD Series Instructor’s Guide This set of three DVD disks (DVD5—4.7 GB disks) contains more than five hours of new video footage associated with each of the six parts of Milady’s Standard Cosmetology textbook. The DVDs are designed for use by the instructor in the classroom to illustrate and reinforce learning of the basic skills, procedures, and practices required for licensure and employment. The disks are packaged in an easily storable, attractive album. Developed for set-top DVD players, this product will also play on a variety of computerbased DVD software packages. A DVD-capable drive is necessary. Some functionality may be sacrificed, depending on the software used. Previewing the disks fully and becoming familiar with their capabilities before use in the classroom are recommended. Advantages of DVD Over Video DVD technology offers many advantages not found in videos. One is its quick and easy access to any section of content on a disk. Arranged more like a filing system than a start-to-finish video, the content can be selected from menus, eliminating the need for rewinding and fast forwarding. And the content is nonlinear, which means it’s much more quickly accessible than on VHS. Another advantage is the broadcast-quality visual content on DVD. This means a remarkably clearer picture and more vibrant, true-to-life color that video cannot offer. Audio quality is also sharper and clearer than video soundtracks, which can often distort sound. On DVD, the audio is equivalent to that of CDs. Videos do not provide true freeze-frame capability, while on DVD, you can pause the action anywhere and see a crystal-clear picture, benefiting you and your students in the classroom. Most DVD players also offer zoom functions, which allow you to isolate and enlarge a portion of the video content. Special Features Designed for use by instructors, all features are accessible through the standard DVD remote included with all DVD players. Further instructions appear on-screen to help guide you through the interactive sections. English and Spanish Capabilities The audio track for all three disks is available in either English or Spanish. In addition, subtitles can be shown in either language, independent of the audio track selected. It is possible to select English audio with Spanish subtitles at the same time, allowing you to customize the best presentation for your particular classroom profile. How to Access: To select a language and subtitles, click on “Settings” on the main menu that appears after inserting the disk. From this menu, select the “subtitle” menu item and choose the subtitle version you want. Then press “enter” on the remote. Repeat the above steps to select an audio language. Multi-angle Scenes Viewing any hairstyling procedure from a single angle limits what you can see. That is why most of the procedures in the Hair Care section have alternate angles available for view. This feature is indicated by a movie camera logo in the lower right corner of the screen. How to Access: To switch to an alternate angle, press the “angle” button found on the DVD remote during a procedure in which the alternate angle logo appears on the screen. The camera view will change within a moment or two. The audio track continues uninterrupted when the angle changes. Wrong Way/Right Way Available in “Your Professional Image” and “Preparing for the Job Interview” sections, these instructor-led video segments first show an interaction that is flawed, followed by the same situation that is handled correctly. During the flawed interaction, you may interrupt the video by pressing the “enter” button on the remote, and a series of multiplechoice questions will appear for class discussion. By allowing you to interrupt with discussion questions wherever you choose, the DVD provides an interactive teaching tool that you direct, putting you in control of the lesson. How to Access: To access the questions, press the “enter” button on the DVD remote and follow the on-screen instructions. Once the series of questions have been answered correctly, the video will resume playback. If the “enter” button is never pressed, you can view the video segment uninterrupted. Organization of Content on DVDs Following is the “table of contents” for each disk. The column on the left lists the DVD segment, and directly to the right in the other column is the corresponding section in the textbook. Refer to this and to the maps provided to locate a particular subject. Then insert the proper disk into the DVD player. Once you arrive at the main menu, go directly to the video you want to display. NOTE It is important that you only “pause” and NOT “stop” the disk from playing. Stopping the disk prevents it from loading its navigation cues into the DVD player, and changing language and subtitle preferences at random. Once you have started the disk and selected the language and subtitles you would like to view, only use the “pause,” “fast forward,” “rewind,” and “menu” buttons. This will ensure the proper viewing experience. How do I use the DVDs with the textbook? A1: First, determine what portion of the text goes with the content on the DVDs by using the correlation charts in this guide. Most instructors prefer to have students read the material from the textbook before viewing the disks. You might assign students to read the content as homework, then discuss in class or assign the WebTutor content that accompanies that chapter. Next, play the DVD content for the class, pausing it wherever you would like to discuss or point out features. Q2. How do I rewind or replay a segment on the DVD? A2. As the DVD is playing, simply press the “rewind” button on the remote until you reach the desired viewing location. To replay: Once the segment has played through, you are returned to the last used submenu. From there, just select the same segment and press “enter.” Q3. How do I play the DVDs on my computer? A3. Although this series was designed to be played on set-top DVD players, it will play on most software-based players. Your computer must have a DVD drive and software to play the videos. Insert the DVD into the DVD drive and open your playback software. Because of the wide variety of DVD drives and software, please refer to your software manual for operating instructions. Q4. Why aren’t there optional angles for all DVD content? A4. Only those technical procedures that would benefit students by showing alternate angles were videotaped with more than one camera. For instance, because the stylist’s arm or hand might block the action, most haircuts were taped from alternate angles. But in the case of a facial, for instance, an alternate angle would not show action different from what the original angle showed. Q5. Why can’t I get the background music to play when I select the Spanish soundtrack? A5. Because of programming requirements, no music will play with the Spanish soundtrack. You will hear the music only when you select the English soundtrack. Q6. How do I switch from English to Spanish audio? A6. Make all language and subtitle choices in the “Settings” menu found in the “Main Menu.” Q7. How do I get the alternate angle to play when subtitles are selected? The alternate angle logo disappears. A7. When viewing the series with the subtitles enabled, the alternate angle logo WILL NOT be seen in the lower right corner of the screen. The alternate angle is accessed through the “Angle” button on the remote control. This is a result of the DVD specification that only allows one overlay to be viewed at a time. Q8. The textbook shows four basic haircuts but there are only three basic haircuts on the DVD. Why isn’t the Long Layered Haircut shown? A8. Since the Long Layered Haircut is really a variation of the Layered Haircut, the DVD does not show it as an additional haircut procedure. Refer students to the textbook to see how to perform the Long Layered Haircut. Q9. Are there any sections on makeup? I don’t see makeup in the main menu for Skin Care. A9. Yes, there are many segments on makeup! When you are in the “Skin Care” menu, select “Facial” and you’ll see five segments on makeup. Q10. When I play the DVDs on my computer, the picture is too small. How can I enlarge it? A10. With most software-based players, if you double-click on the screen, it will enlarge to fill your computer screen. To go back to the smaller size, double-click on the screen again. Q11. How do I pause a DVD so I can continue where I left off? A11. The remote for your DVD player has a “pause” button that functions in a way similar to that of a VCR. Becoming familiar with your DVD player will help you learn how to navigate the Standard Cosmetology DVDs. Do you have a question that’s not addressed here? If so, we’d love to know!
