Major changes to the roads, pedestrian and parking areas have been completed as part of the Kings Park Ceremonial Walk development. Future works will include a new children’s facility and the Rio Tinto Naturescape in Kings Park, to be completed in 2011. The “Attractor”- Perth-Bunbury Freeway interchange sculpture Artist: Gary Aitken The Kings Park Ceremonial Walk provides a paved pedestrian link between the State’s War Memorial precinct, the Western Australian Botanic Garden and the park’s premier tourism facilities. Vehicle traffic has been re-routed away from the State War Memorial behind the restaurant precinct along a new road named Wadjuk Way. The Attractor serves as a way finding device from the Perth Bunbury freeway to the City of Mandurah via the new Mandjoogoordap Rd exit. It is a multi layered conceptual artwork inspired by the complimentary hues of the water, sun and sky (orange and blue) The form of the artwork is homage to the iconic Mandurah Ferriswheel. As part of these changes ETC have designed new lighting in many of these areas including uplighting of the Giant Boab Tree “Gija Jumulul” and lighting of Forrest carpark, Wardong buspark and Wadjuk Way. The Attractor is a one-piece freestanding artwork 8050cm high with circular sculptural forms of 4382cm diameter x 1406cm diameter constructed of mild steel with a painted surface. ETC have illuminated the artwork internally using LED RGB colour changing lighting. A series of colour changing scenes has been programmed with input from the Artist. The new carpark and roadway lighting utilizes state of the art Hybrid Metal Halide lamps called “Cosmopolosis” designed in Europe by Philips Lighting specifically for street lighting applications. Not only does this new lamp technology have improved light output for less watts/energy consumed but it also has a longer life and reduced maintenance. So if its been a while since your last visit to the Kings Park and Botanic Garden we recommend you visit again soon even if its just to take in the magnificent night vistas of the City. The design is an abstract representation of a net, changing as it moves through water. The ‘Scoop” is comprised of five central posts or “ribs” , which are offset in an arch shape. It has been constructed of marine grade aluminum, is approximately 10.5 meters in height and occupies a 25 metre diameter space within the roundabout.
