A WORD FROM
O UR ARTISTI C D I REC TO R
Dear Friends of Musical Arts Indiana,
As I write this I am in the thick of preparations for our exciting new season. We
strive to make each season, well, new. That sometimes means trying things we have
not tried before – ideas we hope will excite our audience and take us ever farther
down the path set by our vision statements and strategic plan: we truly want to
“transform audiences through music” while “promoting multiculturalism throughout the organization through our repertoire and educational programs and building an organization that supports growth and expansion.”
WNIT applauds the outstanding performances
A couple of years ago board member Carla Peterson headed up a survey of our
base, asking what they really wanted from us. Additionally, we have enough experience that we now can tell from our ticket sales which sorts of projects you want
us to continue. All of this—our Mission and Vision Statements, our audience feedback, and our desire for innovation—drives the planning of each new season.
of the many talented individuals representing the
Vesper Chorale and the Children’s
Choir and thanks the staff and board
at Musical Arts Indiana for providing the
community with such inspirational music.
We open our season, returning to St. Adalbert’s Parish for a Diverse Journeys
concert, Discovering the Americas, featuring repertoire from South America and
Mexico. Following that, we offer a Festival of Carols in two locations: First United
Methodist Church—the home of Children’s Choir of Michiana—and a new venue,
Harris Prairie Christian Church. Our season culminates with Haydn’s setting of the
ancient poem, Stabat Mater. We welcome you to our musical offerings.
You might be interested to know that WNIT’s
documentary, Kicking the Notes the Toradze Way,
has won two EMMY Awards and was a finalist

A WORD FROM
OUR EXE C U TI V E D I REC TO R
Dear Musical Arts Indiana Family,
Thank you for joining us this season—you are the heartbeat of our organization.
With a legacy of 22 years and counting, Musical Arts Indiana continues to utilize
resources in the most fiscally responsible manner possible. Programming and
operating decisions are closely connected and in response to patron support. In
good times, we increase marketing efforts and award more scholarships to young
singers. In down times, we decrease instrumentalist budgets and cut performance
opportunities. You, too, have the ability to significantly impact our direction.
Please help strengthen and sustain our efforts by inviting your family and
friends to our concerts, volunteering your time and talents, and donating via
MusicalArtsIndiana.org. Your ongoing support ensures the future of Musical Arts
Indiana as we strive to transform audiences through music.
Sincerely,
Jenna J. Grisham
Executive Director
A WORD FROM
O U R B OA R D
Dear Friends and Supporters of Musical Arts Indiana,
It is with great pleasure that I welcome you to another year of education, artistry and
inspiration with Musical Arts Indiana! The members of our Board feel honored to serve
this worthwhile and life-giving arts organization. We are thrilled that you are joining
with us to be transformed through the music we share with the Michiana community.
On behalf of the Board of Directors, I want to express our sincere gratitude for your
patronage and support of our organization. While your attendance at our events and
your generous contributions enable us to continue to provide the quality musical programming you’ve come to expect from MAI, it is your enthusiasm that inspires and
motivates our ensembles to artistically create performances that allow all to experience
the joy of a Musical Arts Indiana event.
Warm regards,

Helping Musical Arts Indiana
‘Keep the Beat’ Since 2002
F
ounded in 1993, Vesper Chorale took
its name from the early evening prayer
service of the traditional church liturgy,
and originally performed exclusively sacred
music. Led by its educational mission,
the choir has partnered with church, high
school, and college music departments,
providing participants with a professional-level
performance experience.
In November of 2008, Vesper Chorale launched a new initiative, its Diverse
Journeys Concert Series, aspiring to collaborate with ethnic communities in
celebrating the music and history of their respective cultures. Vesper Chorale
performed Donald McCullough’s Holocaust Cantata—Songs from the Camps at
Temple Beth-El of South Bend and Temple Jeremiah in Northfield, Illinois.
Public Broadcasting Station WNIT recorded and broadcast their performance in
April of 2010 in a production nominated for an Indiana Broadcasters Association
Spectrum Award. A series of programs with Mount Carmel Missionary Baptist
Church began in May of 2011, exploring the musical traditions of the AfricanAmerican heritage. This series will continue with its third program being
developed for the 2015-2016 season. Connections with the Latino community—
developed through the congregation of St. Adalbert’s Parish—began with a
concert in 2012 and continues this season.
Vesper Chorale has been recognized with awards from the Kurt and Tessye
Simon Fund for Holocaust Remembrance, Memorial Hospital Foundation,
Elnora Stickley Foundation, Indiana Arts Commission, Indiana Council for the
Humanities, the Community Foundation of St. Joseph County, Progress Club of
South Bend, and the Josephson Music Trust. In 2008, in commemoration of its
15th Anniversary, Vesper Chorale received a citation from the Mayor of South
Bend for its contribution to the community through the arts.

Mozart’s C

Performances have taken

Premiere of Machu Picchu Concert for Quena (Andean Flute) performed by quena

In “The 39 Steps,” a man with a boring life meets a

in a nationwide manhunt that climaxes in a death-defying

The Sophoclean classic: When King Agamemnon returns
from the Trojan War with his new concubine, Cassandra, his
wife, Clytemnestra (who has taken Agamemnon’s cousin
Aegisthus as a lover), kills them. Clytemnestra believes the
murder was justified, since Agamemnon had sacrificed their
daughter, Iphigenia, before the war, as commanded by the
gods. Electra, daughter of Agamemnon and Clytemnestra,
rescued her young twin brother, Orestes, from her mother
by sending him to Strophius of Phocis. The play begins
years later when Orestes has returned as a grown man with
a plot for revenge, as well as to claim the throne.

The Cat in the Hat tells the story of Horton, an elephant
who discovers a speck of dust containing Whos. Horton
faces a double challenge — not only must he protect the
Whos from a world of naysayers and dangers, but he
must guard an abandoned egg. Ultimately, the powers of
friendship, loyalty, family and community are challenged
and emerge triumphant.
Galloping in and out of the four doors of an English
vicarage are an American actor and actress, a cockney
maid who has seen too many American movies, an old
maid who “touches alcohol for the first time in her life,”
four men in clergyman suits presenting the problem of
which is which, and a sedate Bishop aghast at all these
goings on and the trumped-up stories they tell him. This
farce, creatively titled from the nursery rhyme “Three Blind
Mice,” is an evening of nonstop laughs and witty humor.
