Discussion & Book Signing The recently published Demon Pirate of Carolina by local author Faith Pearson and illustrator Choci Gray tells the story of Black Beard the pirate and his rampage along the coast of the Carolinas. Freedom Coming, Freedom For All Panel Exhibit Freedom Coming, Freedom For All is a panel exhibit celebrating the 150th anniversary of the Emancipation Proclamation. The exhibit focuses on what North Carolina looked like before the Civil War. It will cover events leading up to President Abraham Lincoln’s issuance of the Preliminary Emancipation Proclamation, the final Emancipation Proclamation and the 13th Amendment. Black History Series: Reclaiming Our Black Youth As part of the Black History Series, Reclaiming Our Youth will explore current events including stigmas, image, police, and civil rights. This town hall forum will be held on Saturday, February 27 at 12 p.m. at the Kinston-Lenoir Count Public Library. We will also discuss the history behind the unrest in cities like Ferguson, New York City, and Charleston. Part I of this program will be a town hall style discussion to bring to light issues in our community. Part II of this program will be devoted to our youth. The men will mentor the middle and high school boys, and the women will mentor the middle and high school girls. At the end, we will reconvene to take a pledge to Reclaim Our Youth.
