May 12, 2015
Dear Parents/Caregivers, Staff, Students and Friends of
OLA
Have you had the opportunity to read the recently released 2015 Intergenerational Report, “The Challenge of Change” or watch the explanatory presentation by Dr
Karl Kruszelnicki?
Every five years, the Australian Government produces this report that assesses the long ‐ term sustainability of current government policies and how changes to
Australia’s population size and age profile may impact on economic growth, the workforce and public finances over the next forty years.
The Government is required to publish the
Intergenerational Report at this time period. The first three reports were produced in 2002, 2007 and 2010.
One of the key drivers of opportunity and prosperous change and, conversely, one of the most significant areas that will be impacted if government policy and the ability to finance it is not managed effectively, is education. Given this, whilst I recognise that elements of the Report are politically motivated, I thought it was still worthwhile sharing some of the snapshots of the projections and the section from the Summary on education, for your interest and reflection. More detailed information can be found at http://www.challengeofchange.gov.au
Australia’s education system is crucial to improving our productivity and harnessing the opportunities of the future.
Our people, their aspirations and their capacity to innovate, will drive our prosperity into the future.
Over the coming decades, younger people will make up a smaller proportion of our population as life expectancy increases and the population ages. This means there will be a smaller proportion of the population likely to be engaged directly with education, especially in the primary and secondary sectors.
Nevertheless, Commonwealth Government spending and lending is projected to rise from $1,500 per person today to $1,900 in 2054
‐
55.
If we are to improve the standard of education services we receive, we must build a more globally competitive system and spend our dollars in a smarter way.

The International Day of Families
The International Day of Families is observed on the
15 th
of May every year. The day was proclaimed by the
UN General Assembly in 1993 and reflects the importance the international community attaches to families. The International Day provides an opportunity to promote awareness of issues relating to families and to increase knowledge of the social, economic and demographic processes affecting http://www.un.org/en/events/familyday/ families.
A Prayer for Family
Heavenly Father,
Please shine your light upon my family.
Give us strength to overcome all difficulties and protect us against any and all problems we may encounter in the future.
O Lord, please bring us together as we are meant to be.
May the love that binds us only grow stronger.
May we forgive one another Lord, as it is sometimes difficult to do.
Bless us Lord, in your name I pray,
Amen
There is no greater happiness in the world than to be in
Union. Nano Nagle

I hope that all mothers, grandmothers and those who care for others in mothering ways had a wonderful
Mother’s Day on Sunday and were spoilt with the special presents purchased from our Mother’s Day stall last week. A very BIG thank you to Alison Cowan and
Pam Michalski who co-ordinated the stall and to all the helpers who assisted on the day. Without these dedicated volunteers our children would not have an opportunity to purchase these gifts for their parents or carers. A profit of $152.20 was made and will be transferred to the P&F at a later date.
Welcome
A warm welcome to Michele Jia who is replacing Anne-
Marie Flynn in 1F while she is on sick leave; Pip
Sturgeon who is in PN while Alana is on Long Service
Leave and then next week in 5/6F while Rachel
McGufficke is on Long Service Leave. During this time we are also hosting a number of Practicum students from ACU: Kate Adams (5/6F), Nina Kumari Alahakoon
(1F), Amy Gampe (4O), Sissy Campbell (2N) and Kristy
McIntosh, commencing from 29 th
May (3N). We hope you enjoy your teaching experiences at OLA.

Don’t forget that our Term 2 FINS information evening on “Building
Children’s Emotional Resilience” will be held this WEDNESDAY, 13 th
MAY from

Curriculum News
NAPLAN
"The National Assessment Program – Literacy and
Numerac y” (NAPLAN) is an annual assessment for students in Years 3, 5, 7 and 9. It has been a yearly event for schools since
2008.
This week on Tuesday 11 th
(Language
Conventions
Wednesday 12 th and Writing),
(Reading) and
Thursday 13th May (Numeracy), students in Years 3 and 5 will participate in the 2015 NAPLAN tests. Friday,
14 th
May will be a catch-up day for those students who missed a test on any of the previous days.
The purpose of these tests is to asses s each student’s skills in literacy and numeracy at specific phases of learning (ie, Years 3, 5, 7 and 9); that are developed
over time; and through the school curriculum. NAPLAN is not a pass or fail type test, but rather shows how students are progressing in numeracy and literacy skills against National Standards for all Australian children. It also provides valuable information that allows schools and governments to better target effort and support to help all students achieve. An individual student NAPLAN report will be issued later in the year (generally towards the end of Term 3). If you would like to access more information about NAPLAN, please click on this link: http://www.nap.edu.au/
OLA Disco
Last Friday we danced the night away at our Term 2
Disco. The success of these events cannot happen without the support of many people. Thank you to Geni
Verity, Paul Aspin and Tony
McCartney who helped with the set up; to Clare Nugent and all the volunteers who sold refreshments and snacks and supervised the children at both discos or cleaned up at the end of the night; to the OLA staff who were able to attend or who helped with the organisation of the disco; and to Tony McCartney, our resident DJ who always makes the night such an enjoyable evening for all…THANK YOU!!! We raised $1425.40 which will go towards the whole school end of year excursion to
Sandgate Pool.
Best wishes for the week ahead

Not all of our significant sporting achievements occur at school; many of our OLA children are involved in teams, activities or sport outside of school. We always like hearing about what our OLA children achieve beyond our gates. Please send us a note, an email or photos if you have an outstanding achievement that you think our
OLA community would like to recognise.

Qkr
With the OLA Carnival fast approaching, if you haven’t done so already, now is the time to download our latest method of payment - Qkr (pronounced ‘quicker’) to your mobile device.
Using safe and secure Mastercard technology, Qkr is a mobile payments platform that enables parent/caregivers to order and pay for tuckshop, uniform and very soon, Carnival orders directly from their smart device.
Qkr is available 24/7, convenient for parents, removes paper orders and cash, is free to join and only takes a few minutes. After downloading the app and registering, simply tap the magnifying glass in the top right of the home screen and type OURLADYSWH. The app will then continue to recognise you as part of OLA to make payments even easier. Qkr accepts all major credit and debit cards accepted by the school and you can register more than one card within the app. The Qkr app is available from the Apple App Store and Google
Play. If using an iPad, download the iPhone version.
So, download and register for Qkr now and start making payments right away!
Choir Notes
Gumnuts choir (Year 3) will be performing at assembly on Monday 18 th

11.30am. Please try to plan your day around this, as all choir members are expected to attend.
