Huge
Success
A sell-out crowd of 300 attended the 4th Annual
Gifts from the Earth gala, sponsored by the South
Seattle Community College Foundation. The evening,
which included live and silent auctions, raised
$160,000 to support scholarships, faculty development
grants, program enhancements, and student success
investments. Many thanks to Title sponsor Food
Services of America; Estate sponsors Boeing and
Union Bank of California; and Harvest sponsors Bob
Rebar & Associates, Interbay Foods, and Tony’s
Coffee and Teas. And an equally big “thank you” to all
the dedicated event volunteers!
All-Washington
Achievers
(Tammy) N. Tan Tram, Running Start student (L)
and Abeba Vandenburgh, College Transfer student (R)
have been selected as South’s representatives to the AllWashington Academic Team, which honors Washington
state community and technical college students for academic
achievement and community service. Members of the AllWashington Academic Team will be honored at an awards
ceremony on March 20, at South Puget Sound Community
College in Olympia. Each student scholar will receive a
medallion, a $750 scholarship, and be recognized by Gov.
Christine Gregoire. To learn more about the All-Washington
Academic Team, go to http://www.spscc.ctc.edu/allwa.
Heroic
Instructor
Diesel mechanic instructor Doug Clapper was
instrumental in rescuing a 20-year old driver following a
traffic accident. Clapper, a Lynnwood resident, was the first
to spot the car in a ditch and worked frantically with another
man and several Lynnwood High School students to rescue
the young woman trapped inside. He hoped to remain
anonymous, but when his name was provided to the local
newspaper he responded, “I would sure hope if it was me
or one of my children, someone would do the same thing.”
We’re thrilled to be able to recognize his good deed.
NISOD
Winners
Congratulations to Jessie McDonald, Worker
Retraining instructor (L) and Marjie Vittum-Jones,
Math instructor (R) on their selection as South’s
2007-2008 National Institute for Staff and Organizational
Development (NISOD) Award winners. Selection was
based on their commitment to students, professional
development, and the college, as well as their activities
in support of the college mission and goals.
