Tone and Mood:
Tone: > the author's feelings toward his/her subject
> think of "tone of voice"
> examples: sarcastic, humorous, pleasant, angry
Mood:
> the way the writing makes YOU (the reader) feel
> mood can be created through the author's tone as well as the use of imagery
> examples: frightened, sad, excited, anxious, suspenseful

Chapter 5:
• Read chapter 5 with a partner.
• Make sure to mark your text and look for examples of mood and tone as you read.
• Answer the following questions when you finish reading:
1. How has the pearl changed as a symbol?
2. In chapter three the narrator said a town was like a colonial animal, with all parts very closely tied to each other. What three major events in chapter five break Kino's ties with the town and make him an outsider? Do you think he could become part of the town again in the future?
3. Did the violent conflict between Kino and Juana in this chapter surprise you? Or did passages in earlier chapters suggest that it might occur? Explain your answer.
4. Kino says the "pearl has become my soul." Do you think some people have similar feelings today? What objects today might play a similar role to the role of Kino's pearl?

Eleven volunteers will be assigned two tone words and one quote from The Pearl. You need to choose one of the tone words to use when reciting your quote.
DO NOT SHOW ANYONE YOUR SLIP OF PAPER!!
Each student will come to the front and recite their quote using the given tone.
The class will then guess what tone you are using.
