REGENCY PLACE SPECIALIST EDITION October 2015 Edition 1 Pump It Up With Mr. Guelbert In This Issue Physical Education 1st Quarter Essential Question: How do I show respect for myself and others during physical activity? Students learned some easy ways to play a few of the many recess activities, along with some simple solutions to help solve issues that occur on the playground. We focused on using the problem solving wheel when working with partners during PE, and ways to carry that over at recess, as well as outside of school. Students learned the importance of teamwork with ALL of their classmates and not just some of them. Chief Business Editor, Prentice Hall, 1957 Computer lab has been busy. Right off the bat the Computer Lab got a much needed makeover—new paint and projector! Kindergarten students have been learning basic parts of the computer and are practicing with the mice. For some students, this is the first time they’ve been on a computer. We have lots of fun games and activities that help us to learn how to use the mouse correctly. First and second grade students have been practicing their logins and have been working in Word. We’ve also reviewed the parts of the computer. Third, fourth and fifth grade students started out the year by creating their own unique passwords. These passwords will expire every ninety days and will need to be changed. We are also creating files to help keep us organized and working in Word. As always, we are practicing our typing skills and working on correct finger placement and typing without looking at our hands. Please encourage your third, fourth and fifth grader to type correctly at home. Typing is a life-long skill that will definitely benefit your student in their academic career. Thank you for your continued support. Counselor’s Corner with Ms. Mullen Grades K – 2nd We are learning how to work as a team and recognizing that everyone has their own thoughts that affect their feelings. We are reading the books, Thinking Thoughts and Feeling Feelings and then making our own think bubbles to go with the story. We are also learning that sometimes we have to follow a group plan when more than one person is involved. We are reading the book, The Group Plan and then playing fun activities that help practice how to develop a group plan through communication, understanding and compromise. We will also read the story, Thinking With Your Eyes. The concept of thinking with your eyes helps children understand there is a purpose for observing others and the environment. Our eyes are like arrows – they point to what we are looking at, which suggests what we (or others) are thinking about. We will practice thinking with our eyes by playing the structured activity “Think With Your Eyes” candy game and the “What am I looking at?” game. Grades 3rd – 5th We will be working on our anti-bully week project for the second week of October, an RP Kindness Canvas. Based on our RP book theme for the 2015-2016 school year, The Invisible Boy by Trudy Ludwig. This story is about Brian, the invisible boy. Nobody ever seems to notice him or think to include him in their group, game, or birthday party until a new kid comes to class. When Justin, the new boy, arrives, Brian is the first to make him feel welcome. And when Brian and Justin team up to work on a class project together, Brian finds a way to shine. Each class will work in teams to create an 11X14 canvas to illustrate what they learn from the story. After finishing their rough draft during guidance class, students will take their canvas back to their classroom to finalize. Each individual canvas will then be attached to create one large kindness canvas to be displayed for all to enjoy! Check it out! It’s proudly displayed outside Counselor Mullen’s office! Painting Anti-bulling Posters “Think with your eyes, feel with you heart and let others know you want to be their friend” Read about it with Mrs. Shaw The library has been a super busy place this year! Kids are now coming to the library for a full hour a week!! Yeah! We are so happy to have these kiddos in the library for additional time—to learn more about library skills and have extra time for book selection. So far this year we have covered: Kindergarten – We introduced the library to our newest students. We read some of Mrs. Shaw’s favorite books (Minerva Louise series) and most importantly we began checking out books. We spent many library times on book care and have now moved on to learning about the different parts in our books. We have had a great time! Full day kindergarten comes to see me twice a week and can return both times to select new books! Thank you to all the parents who have to exchange books more frequently!! st 1 Grade – 1st grade came in with a bang! We were super excited to go from one book checkout in Kindergarten to 2 books in first grade! We started out reading some really fun stories (Don’t Let the Pigeon Drive the Bus & Press Here) and of course reviewing book care. We have also been focusing on the two kinds of books we find in the library, fiction & nonfiction. We have practiced sequencing our stories and putting our stories in order. We also did a quick author study of Mem Fox. 2 nd Grade – We had such a smooth transition from 1st to 2nd grade in the library. With our extra time we have incorporated stations. The 2nd half of our time is divided between checkout, iPad, and literacy scrapbooks where we have been reflecting on our stories we are reading. rd 3 Grade – We have had lots of fun starting our year in 3rd grade. We have done a scavenger hunt to learn the library, discussed how to choose just right books, and started learning about the Dewey Decimal System. During our read-aloud time, we’re trying to figure out if Marvin Redpost is REALLY the lost prince! th 4 Grade – We have been working hard in library. We have introduced Battle of the Books and practiced finding books on the shelves and have now moved on to practicing some good reading strategies. We used visualization & questioning to understand what we are reading. We have also started a read aloud that has us wondering what is going to happen next. 5th Grade – What a year, we introduced BOB again, and practiced locating books. We also are working on a library promotion project where they are sharing one book they have read in this library and want to tell others about. We have had to take a quick break to work on Native American research.
