Symmetry Animals can be classified based on symmetry. There main types of symmetry are: 1. Asymmetry 2. Radial Symmetry 3. Bilateral Symmetry Asymmetry Asymmetry: No Symmetry. The simplest forms of animals have no symmetry. Asymmetrical animals have no general body plan or axis of symmetry. (ex: sponges) Axis of Symmetry Axis of Symmetry: Line that can be drawn through the center of an organism and divide it into half. Draw the Axis of Symmetry in Each Picture This Picture Has 2 Axes of Symmetry Radial Symmetry Radial Symmetry: Symmetry in a circle. Animals that have body parts organized about a central axis like the spokes in a bicycle wheel have Radial Symmetry. This allows animals to reach out in all directions from one central point. (ex: jellyfish and starfish) Bilateral Symmetry Bilateral Symmetry: One Plane of Symmetry This produces mirror halves. Most complex animals (ones we think of) show bilateral symmetry.
