Sun Herald reported an unnamed person close to Favre’s family said he hadn’t made a decision whether to play a second season with the Vikings. Childress, caught in the middle, referred to the situation as “fluid” and said he was “not aware” of any retirement message sent by Favre. Said Shiancoe after the Vikings’ second practice of the hot, humid day: “(Favre) hasn’t told me yet — I’m going to check my phone right now — but it hasn’t been said publicly yet, so I don’t know what to believe.” Favre began informing select Vikings officials on Monday night, according to multiple NFL sources, that his left ankle wasn’t responding to the surgery he underwent in late May and that he was going to announce his retirement in a press release on Tuesday. This sent the Vikings scrambling to try to persuade Favre that he Never-ending saga has ‘Watergate’ feel BY JUDD ZULGAD McClatchy-Tribune New Service M A N K AT O, M i n n. — Brad Childress couldn’t help himself. Thirteen questions into a rapidfire post-practice news conference Tuesday morning, the Vikings’ coach slowed the pace. “I feel like this is Watergate,” he said. “Have I done something wrong? Lord have mercy!” Childress was paying the price for employing Brett Favre as his quarterback. Favre, who has officially retired twice and once had an advertising campaign built around his indecision, was at it again Tuesday. After texting teammates and team officials that he was ready to call it quits, the star player issued no official statements from his compound in Hattiesburg, Miss., leaving the media scurrying, as usual, for clues to his next step. didn’t need to make such a hurried decision. The Vikings’ ownership group was in town and the morning practice featured a scene in which principal owners Zygi and Mark Wilf huddled with team vice presidents Rick Spielman, Rob Brzezinski and Kevin Warren on the sideline on more than one occasion. Childress reiterated that he isn’t pressing Favre for a decision and did not dismiss the potential that Favre could return during the regular season. According to NFL sources, the Vikings’ pitch to bring back Favre now includes an offer that would pay him more than the $13 million he is due for the 2010 season. It’s unclear how much the Vikings are offering, but it’s believed the increase would be at least $3 million and possibly more. Holmes (above) shot a 60 and Stuart Appleby (right) carded a 59 in last week’s PGA Greenbrier Classic. Is that a sign that the courses have become too easy? Low-score blitz talk of golf BY DOUG FERGUSON for a 59, rallying from a seven-shot deficit to win. What exactly is golf’s magic number these days? Ryo Ishikawa might argue that it’s 58, for that’s what he shot in the final round to win on the Japan Golf Tour in May. If you allow Bobby Wyatt to join the conversation, the teenager could lobby for his 57 last week at the Alabama Boys State Junior Championship. All of which leads to another question. Has golf become too easy? “You still have to make the score,” David Duval said. “You still have to hit the shots.” Duval shot his 59 in the final round of the Bob Hope Classic in 1999, becoming only the third player in PGA Tour history to shoot 59. That was 11 years ago. Two players matched that in a span of four weeks. “I guess it’s the law of averages. We were due to have a couple of good ones,” Goydos said Monday. “Maybe the bigger story is not why there was an 11-year drought, but why we went more than two weeks without one? Or you could always make the argument that everyone figured that if Goydos could do it, anyone could do it.” Ernie Els recalls the one time he had a shot at 59. “At Royal Melbourne of all places,” Els said. “Those Aussies were (beside) themselves. Nobody could shoot 60 at Royal Melbourne. And they were trying to talk on my backswing the last three holes. ... I had two chances coming in. Didn’t quite do it. I think I felt embarrassed for them.” Now, however, Els is searching for reasons just like everyone else. Associated Press AKRON, Ohio — The PGA Tour used to be so hard that it was boring to play, much less watch. It was only three years ago at Firestone — Tiger Woods was the only player to break par that week — that Steve Stricker spoke for dozens of players when he said just about every tournament felt like a major. It sure hasn’t seemed like that lately. “This is a little different,” Stricker said with a smile Tuesday when reminded of his comments. Now, every tournament feels like the Bob Hope Classic. Consider the flurry of low scores over the last four weeks on the PGA Tour: —Paul Goydos became the first player in 11 years to shoot golf’s magic number when he opened with a 59 at the John Deere Classic. Even more amazing was it only gave him a one-shot lead over Stricker, who shot 60 and went on to win the tournament. —Rory McIlroy didn’t flirt with a 59, but he had a great chance to set a major championship record at the British Open until he missed a 5-foot birdie putt on the 17th at St. Andrews. He was mildly disappointed with a 63. —Carl Pettersson had to settle for a 60 in the third round of the Canadian Open when his 30-foot birdie putt from just off the front of the 18th green caught part of the lip. —D.A. Point had a chance to shoot 59 at the Greenbrier until he three-putted for bogey on the par-5 17th and shot 61. It wasn’t even the low score of the third round — J.B. Holmes shot a 60 that day. Please see CARDS | 3B Freese season ends with surgery BY R.B. FALLSTROM Associated Press ST. LOUIS — St. Louis Cardinals rookie third baseman David Freese will miss the rest of the season with a tendon injury in his right leg that will require surgery. Freese was hurt rounding third base in his first rehab game for Double-A Springfield Monday night and pulled up about 30 feet from home plate with an injury that’s comparable to a dislocation. The team believes this injury is unrelated to the right ankle bone bruise that landed Freese on the 15-day disabled list on June 28. General manager John Mozeliak said Freese injured a tendon that holds the ankle in place, and said it was more common to football players. He had anticipated the news after talking to the Springfield trainer and hearing the report. “I didn’t think it would be very positive,” Mozeliak said. “I had a bad feeling about it.” The 27-year-old Freese is batting .296 with four homers and 36 RBIs, his average dropping below .300 when he played for a while after getting hurt. Manager Tony La Russa had anticipated Freese rejoining the lineup in a week to 10 days. Felipe Lopez has gotten the bulk of the playing time at third base since Freese was hurt, and La Russa said he’d also consider using rookie outfielder Allen Craig there. Craig was recalled from Triple-A Memphis Tuesday and was batting fifth against the Houston Astros, with outfielder Nick Stavinoha optioned to Memphis. “Obviously it’s disappointing, but we’ve played quite a while without him,” Mozeliak said. “Other people will have to step up.” Mozeliak said the Cardinals might also seek a trade for a player who would have to clear waivers. Freese made his major league debut in 2009, another season marred by injury. He played only 17 games with the Cardinals last year, spending time at four levels after spraining his left ankle. His spring training start was delayed that season by an auto accident. The latest injury brings concerns about long-term durability. “When you think about major league baseball and sustaining a career it’s about being Please see FREESE |3B COLLEGE BASKETBALL CONTACT US UK ticket prices on rise Sports................... 575-8665 sports@paducahsun.com Steve Millizer ......... 575-8663 smillizer@paducahsun.com Joey Fosko ............ 575-8661 jfosko@paducahsun.com Dusty Luthy Shull ... 575-8662 dluthy@paducahsun.com Kentucky basketball programs’ recent resurgence comes with a price — tickets will cost more next season. SPORTS paducahsun.com The Paducah Sun • Wednesday, August 4, 2010 • 3B Showalter ‘not naive’ about Orioles’ rebuilding job BY PETER SCHMUCK McClatchy-Tribune News Service BALTIMORE — The book on new Orioles manager Buck Showalter is a fairly easy read. He’s known as a master of preparation, a student of the game, a micromanager and a guy who can see the big picture and the small picture at the same time. That was on display at his introductory news conference at Camden Yards. He talked about the Orioles’ proud history. He was deferential to outgoing interim manager Juan Samuel. He deftly navigated inquiries about the sensitive, uncharted territory he will inhabit alongside Orioles president Andy MacPhail and owner Peter Angelos. And yet there was still one question that hung in the air like a room-service curveball. Does he really know what he’s getting into? “I’m not naive,” he said on a couple of occasions. Of course, he’s not. He spent a big chunk of his career in George Steinbrenner’s New York Yankees organization. He has been hired and fired three times at the major league level. He’s certainly no babe in the woods, but he has never encountered a situation quite like this one. Showalter took over a Yankees team during one of that franchise’s longer competitive dry spells, but it was still the richest organization in professional sports. He managed the Arizona Diamondbacks from birth, so he didn’t have to deal with expectations or past resentments. . The Orioles are two months from completing their 13th consecutive losing season. They have alienated a huge percentage of their fan following. The owner has become the poster boy for how not to run a professional sports organization. Showalter is aware of all this, but can anyone truly be prepared for it? “I think I’ve done my homework,” he said. “Everybody talks about the Cardinals in the Na- tional League in St. Louis and the fans, and there’s just a certain karma and feeling to the culture there. And I feel the same way about Baltimore.” He’s a tough master who requires a total effort, a winning attitude, an unflinching respect for the game and players who are willing to put their personal priorities aside to join in the pursuit of the team’s common goals. “And if somebody doesn’t share those goals,” he said, “I’m sure they are going to be comfortable playing somewhere else.” That’s what a lot of fans have been waiting to hear. There is the perception that the players have gotten too accepting of their current fate ... that someone needs to shake them out of their comfort zone and shatter the culture of losing that permeates the organization from top to bottom. “I think all competitive people like the idea of people saying it can’t be done,” he said. If that’s true, he’s going to love it here. Suh ends holdout, inks with Lions Associated Press Buck Showalter (center) talks with second baseman Brian Roberts (left) and right fielder Nick Markakis during batting practice on Tuesday before his first game as manager for the last-place Baltimore Orioles’ baseball game against the Los Angeles Angels. CARDS: Astros shell Garcia, secure win for Norris CONTINUED FROM 1B BY CARLOS MONARREZ McClatchy-Tribune News Service DETROIT — The Detroit Lions have reached a contract agreement with defensive tackle and No. 2 overall pick Ndamukong Suh, who is expected to end a four-day holdout and join the team for practice. Two people with knowledge of the negotiations, who did not want to upstage an official announcement, told the Free Press on Tuesday night that the sides had agreed on a five-year contract believed to be worth up to $68 million. The deal would guarantee Suh $40 million. That guarantee is less than the $41.7 million the Lions assured quarterback Matthew Stafford last year, when he was the No. 1 pick and signed a six-year, $78-million deal. Whether Suh or Stafford received more guaranteed money had been a sticking point in the protracted negotiations. Suh’s agent, Eugene Parker, declined to comment. The Lions, meanwhile, said they had nothing to report or confirm. Suh, believed to be en route Tuesday night from Lincoln, Neb., missed six practices over four days of training camp. Coaches and players have been eagerly awaiting his signing. “I think it’s great,” offensive tackle Jon Jansen said when he heard of Suh’s deal. “We’re excited to have everybody in camp, especially to have all the rookies and to have a player of his caliber. It’s going to make us better and I’m excited that he’s finally (signing) and all the business side is all done.” Suh should expect some teasing from his teammates. “Oh, we’ll give him a hard time,” Jansen said. “But that comes with however big his contract is.” ners in scoring position. They missed the franchise record for runs by one and had a season-best 22 hits. Garcia, who leads NL rookies with nine victories, gave up eight runs and 10 hits in five innings. He missed his first shot at becoming the team’s first rookie to reach double figures in victories since 2002, although only one run in the Astros’ five-run second was earned. Norris (4-7) is 5-1 with a 2.27 ERA in six career starts against the Cardinals and had allowed only one run in 20 innings his first three career appearances in St. Louis, all victories. He lost to the Cardinals last month in Houston and was not nearly as dominant this time either, allowing four runs in six innings. FREESE: Motte MRI shows no shoulder problems CONTINUED FROM 1B able to play,” Mozeliak said. “Unfortunately in his case he’s had a rash of unfortunate injuries. “You obviously feel bad for the player, he really did try to get back, it just wasn’t in the Cards.” Reliever Jason Motte underwent an MRI that showed no problems after experiencing shoulder irritation during his outing Monday night. La Russa said Motte had heat applied to the shoulder after working a scoreless seventh, but told the team he was fine before walking Michael Bourn and Anderson Hernandez to start the eighth. “This sounds almost soap opera like,” La Russa said. “After the game was over he said his shoulder bothered him, and it bothered him after he warmed up, so why didn’t he just say? We could have gone to a left-handed reliever to start the inning. “All of a sudden he missed badly. Eight times.” Motte said the MRI exam showed inflammation in the joint. “That’s about it,” Motte said. “Everything’s perfectly fine.” Motte was 3-2 with a 2.70 ERA with two saves. “It was one of those things that it was just uncomfortable,” Motte said. “I had no idea where the ball was going, it was one of those weird things.” Motte said he felt a “little uncomfortable,” but not to the point where he couldn’t pitch. Watching video later he noticed he dropped his shoulder a bit to avoid pain. “I think my mind was just telling my arm, ‘We’re not going to do it right now,”’ Motte said. SCORES: Optimum conditions produce record rounds CONTINUED FROM 1B Associated Press Tarvaris Jackson (left), rookie Joe Webb and Sage Rosenfels, working out at the Minnesota Vikings’ training camp, will battle to become the starting quarterback if Brett Favre retires. FAVRE: Vikings have options, but prefer Favre return CONTINUED FROM 1B Favre holds a trump card in contract talks, in part because ownership knows its odds of getting traction for a much-desired new stadium increase greatly with the presence of the future Hall of Famer. In his first season with the Vikings in 2009, Favre led the team to a 12-4 record, a division title and a berth in the conference championship game, where they lost in overtime to the New Orleans Saints. “I don’t know about it being disappointing but it definitely will be a blow to the team,” if Favre doesn’t return, Shiancoe said. “It will be a setback.” Favre, who will turn 41 on Oct. 10, had one of the best seasons of his career last year, throwing for 4,202 yards (his best total since 1998), 33 touchdowns (his best since 1997) and a career-low seven interceptions. He took a beating in the NFC title game, injuring his thigh and ankle and has spent the offseason trying to decide whether to return for a 20th NFL season. Childress did not push Favre for an answer on his future and the hope was he would join the Vikings after they broke training camp in Mankato on Aug. 12. That’s what made Tuesday’s news surprising. Favre went through a nearly identical dance with the Vikings last year when he called Childress one day before training camp to say that he wasn’t going to end his retirement to come to Minnesota. Favre had undergone surgery on a torn biceps in his throwing arm in the spring and felt his body couldn’t take the grind of another season. Favre, however, changed his mind on Aug. 18 — after the team had broken camp in Mankato — and signed a twoyear, $25 million deal with the Vikings. That roller-coaster ride was one reason why the Vikings have seemed so confident Favre would return in 2010, despite having a third surgery on his left ankle. While Favre expressed doubt in recent weeks about his recovery, Childress came away encouraged about Favre’s mobility and arm after the two visited last month in Hattiesburg. If Favre does retire, the Vikings’ starting quarterback would be Tarvaris Jackson. Jackson, who has been taking the majority of the reps with the first team in training camp, has a 10-10 record as a starter in four years, including 0-1 in the postseason. The Vikings desire will remain that Favre reverses course once again — would anyone be surprised? — and eventually joins them. “Hopefully, we’ll see him when we get back to Winter Park,” Pro Bowl defensive end Jared Allen said. “If it doesn’t happen, he had a great career.” “I don’t know if the tour is trying to get some people to watch television again because they’re seeing a lot of birdies,” he said with a halfsmile that made you wonder if he really was serious. “But I’m not sure what my take is. There’s even two 60s, 61s. It’s starting to look like the Nationwide Tour.” Theories abound, only because everyone wants answers in a sport that rarely provides them. Yes, these guys are good. They are better than ever, and there are more of them than ever before. They play with less fear and attack every pin. What can’t be overlooked is golf’s greatest defense against low scores — firm greens and wind. Both have been on holiday of late. “John Deere was like playing in a vacuum,” said Goydos, who could lift, clean and place his ball when he shot 59. “It was like dome golf.” Appleby has been playing golf every week since May, so he’s an expert on conditions. He was in the same group when Stricker shot his 60 at the John Deere, and he played with Points during his round of 61. “There’s a common theme,” Appleby said. “Course preparation and weather is everything. ... You have to make everything, and you can only do that on basically receptive greens. None of these rounds are shot on firm greens, I can assure you of that.” BUSINESS 4B • Wednesday, August 4, 2010 • The Paducah Sun paducahsun.com YOUR STOCKS Name P/E Last A-B-C-D ADC Tel ... 12.70 Personal spending was unchanged in June, the Commerce Department reported Tuesday. It was the third straight month of lackluster consumer demand. Incomes were also f lat, the weakest showing in nine months. And the personal savings rate rose to 6.4 percent of aftertax incomes in June. The savings rate is now about three times the 2.1 percent average for all of 2007, before the reces- sion began. The disappointing report on spending and income was among a raft of data released Tuesday that confirmed the economy ended the April-toJune quarter on a weak note. Factory orders dropped 1.2 percent in June to a seasonally adjusted $406.4 billion, the Commerce Department said. It was the second consecutive decline after nine straight months of gains. Lower demand for steel, construction machinery and aircraft dragged down the figure. And the number of buyers who signed contracts to purchase homes fell in June. That was the lowest on records dating back to 2001 and down nearly 19 percent from the same month a year earlier. While income growth was flat in June, incomes did post solid gains in April and May. But households chose to save the extra money rather than spend it. “It is of some comfort that households now appear to have something of a cushion that can be used to pay down debt or support spending,” said Paul Dales, U.S. economist at Capital Economics. She has no siblings and very little family, so her experience with babies is limited. Petey seems to be rather small (about 12 pounds) for a 5-month-old. He seldom lifts his arms or legs or does any of the things my children did at that age. Helen has used a swaddling blanket on Petey since he was born. She makes him take a lot of extended naps during the day, plus at least eight hours of sleep at night. I fear she may have done some harm with this tight bondage, maybe cutting off circulation to his limbs. How can I approach Helen about my concerns? Should I just MYOB? She becomes very defensive if anyone makes a comment about the baby. Her grandmother made a few suggestions once, and Helen didn’t let her see Petey for six weeks. Also, Petey has not been checked by a doctor for nearly two months. Is this OK? Please give me some guidelines. — Shirley. Dear Shirley: Swaddling is quite common and often helps babies sleep. Most infants outgrow it by 2 months, although some con- ANNIE’S MAILBOX With Kathy Mitchell and Marcy Sugar Annie’s Mailbox is written by Kathy Mitchell and Marcy Sugar, longtime editors of the Ann Landers column. tinue a while longer. It is usually a good idea to stop swaddling when the baby learns to roll over, since it can become too constricting. At the very least, the swaddling should be loosened. Also, the longer an infant is swaddled the harder it can be to get the child to learn to sleep without it. The pediatrician should see Petey roughly every two months to check his development. Between 4 months and 7 months, babies should be rolling over, reaching out for things and able to stay in a sitting position and hold up their heads and chests when lying on their stomachs. It’s time to call the doctor if these milestones are not reached ZIGGY T Tuesday’s Key by 7 months, or if the child doesn’t use an arm, a leg or one side of the body. Petey may be just fine, but if you think otherwise, bring this column to Helen, and use it to start a neutral discussion. Dear Annie: My 16-year-old son has mostly girls for friends. They invite him everywhere. He does have a couple of guy friends, but they hang around other boys my son doesn’t like very much, so he usually stays away. He also isn’t very good at sports, so he avoids them. Is this OK? — N.Y. Dear N.Y.: Yes. A lot of perfectly normal teenage boys are not athletic and/or have little interest in sports, and many find the company of girls less threatening than that of teenage males, who can be aggressive and taunting. If your son seems well-adjusted and is relatively happy and doing well in school, we wouldn’t worry about these preferences. 3UDOKUISANUMBER PLACINGPUZZLEBASEDON AXGRIDWITHSEVERAL GIVENNUMBERS 4HEOBJECTISTOPLACE THENUMBERSTOINTHE EMPTYSQUARESSOTHAT EACHROWEACHCOLUMN ANDEACHXBOXCON TAINSTHESAMENUMBER ONLYONCE BLONDIE GARFIELD B.C. u Please e-mail your questions to anniesmailbox@comcast. net, or write to: Annie’s Mailbox, c/o Creators Syndicate, 5777 W. HOROSCOPE TÊÜÊÌÊ7Àà MARVIN WEDNESDAY, AUGUST 4, 2010 ARIES (March 21-April 19): Past experience will help you decide on business and personal partnerships. Get involved in new ventures and activities that allow you to meet people from different backgrounds. Don’t let emotions stand in the way of change. TAURUS (April 20-May 20): Strive for perfection. Share your plans and you will get the support you want and need. Romance is in the picture and time put aside to spend with someone you care for will enhance your relationship. GEMINI (May 21-June 20): An attraction to someone off-limits may jeopardize your job. Keep your desires to yourself. Your quick response to what others do and say will put you ahead of any competition, allowing you to please the people who count. CANCER (June 21-July 22): You’ll face plenty of uncertainty but if you are true to your word and you take care of your personal responsibilities first, you will have no regrets. It will take more than someone giving you a push to derail your plans. LEO (July 23-Aug. 22): You may feel like helping out but if someone is trying to take advantage of you, it’s best to back away and put your efforts elsewhere. Be prepared to make a move if that’s what will help you advance personally and financially. VIRGO (Aug. 23-Sept. 22): Kids, friends and lovers will all play an important role in your life. Be willing to listen and assess each situation you face before making a commitment. It’s important to love what you do if you want to feel successful. LIBRA (Sept. 23-Oct. 22): Don’t be fooled by something that may not be as it appears. A promise isn’t likely to be fulfilled and may cost you emotionally and financially. If something appears to be questionable, move in the opposite direction quickly. SCORPIO (Oct. 23-Nov. 21): Added responsibilities may make you feel important but at the end of the day, if you haven’t completed your own work, you will have regrets. Prepare to push back if someone tries to strong-arm you. SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22-Dec. 21): Making home improvements or changes to your lifestyle or the people you hang with will lead to a financial endeavor that will bring favorable results. Don’t let love stand in the way of your personal or professional progress. CAPRICORN (Dec. 22-Jan. 19): You’ll have a lot riding on your next move. Be prepared to do what you know is right and refuse to let an emotional situation cause you to make a mistake. Now is not the time to feel sorry for someone playing with your emotions. AQUARIUS (Jan. 20-Feb. 18): A personal situation you want to address can be dealt with cordially if you pick and choose your words carefully. Be honest with others and you will not have to worry about someone coming back and asking questions that may leave you in a tight spot. PISCES (Feb. 19-March 20): Don’t be afraid to put pressure on someone you want an answer from. Showing your reluctance to be pushed around or ignored will make a statement that will help you in future negotiation. Don’t succumb to emotional blackmail. Birthday Baby: You are strong, dependable, imaginative and practical. You love a challenge. DILBERT WIZARD OF ID MARY WORTH ZITS BEETLE BAILEY ONE BIG HAPPY paducahsun.com PEOPLE paducahsun.com The Paducah Sun • Wednesday, August 4, 2010 • 9B Bristol Palin calls off engagement to Johnston Associated Press Associated Press ‘Glee’ co-creators Ryan Murphy (right) and Ian Brennan participate in a panel discussion at the Fox Television Critics Association summer press tour in Beverly Hills, Calif., on Monday. ‘Glee’ co-creator says McCartney pitched a few tunes for the series N.J., Seacrest said he didn’t know how big the revamped panel will turn out to be. “American Idol” started with three judges and then expanded to four. Two openings have been created by the departures of Simon Cowell and Ellen DeGeneres, with Steven Tyler and Jennifer Lopez reportedly front-runners for the chairs. Fox has declined to comment on whether Randy Jackson and Kara DioGuardi will be returning to the panel for season 10 in January. Seacrest joked he misses Cowell, his “roommate” while on the road for auditions. BEVERLY HILLS, Calif. — “Glee” co-creator Ryan Murphy thought he was being “punked” when a fan note arrived from Paul McCartney. But Murphy discovered that the pop legend is an admirer of the hit Fox TV show and wants his music to be part of it. McCartney enclosed a mix of some of his tunes, including “Michelle,” and asked Murphy to consider using them on the series about high school misfits in a glee club. “I was gobsmacked. I grew up with that guy. So, of course, we are going to do something,” Murphy told the Television Critics Association’s summer meeting Monday. The former Beatle won’t be the only familiar name associated with “Glee” when it returns next season. Susan Boyle, the unlikely “Britain’s Got Talent” discovery, is in talks to be part of the Christmas episode, Murphy said. Another hour will feature the songs of Britney Spears, and the show is wooing a “major” artist, whom Murphy wouldn’t identify, for a tribute episode to air after the Super Bowl next year. ‘Charlie’s Angel’ Jackson plans to write memoir NEW YORK — The “Smart Angel” is writing a memoir. Gallery Books said Tuesday that “Charlie’s Angels” star Kate Jackson will look back on her acting career and her personal crises and triumphs, from surviving breast cancer to Jackson adopting a boy. The book, currently untitled, is scheduled for June 2011. Gallery is an imprint of Simon & Schuster. In the 1970s, Jackson starred with Farrah Fawcett and Jaclyn Smith on the hit TV series “Charlie’s Angels.” Seacrest says ‘Idol’ decision may be weeks away EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. — “American Idol” host Ryan Seacrest says it could be weeks before the guessing game over the show’s new judges comes to an end. At auditions for the Fox TV singing contest Tuesday in East Rutherford, Michaels, Morales to co-host ‘Miss Universe Pageant’ NEW YORK — Rocker Bret Michaels and TV correspondent Natalie Morales are hosting this year’s Miss Universe Pageant. The Miss Universe Organization announced Tuesday that Michaels, the musician and Michaels reality TV star, and Morales, who reports for NBC’s “Today,” will be presiding when the pageant airs live from Las Vegas on August 23 on NBC. The two-hour special will gather contestants representing more than 80 countries. They will compete in three categories: swimsuit, evening gown and interview. The other girl was not identified, but a pregnant exgirlfriend of Johnston has publicly denied he is the father. Palin, the 19 -year-old daughter of former Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin, told People magazine that Johnston told her about the baby on July 14, the day the couple had announced their engagement. Bristol Palin and Johnston have a toddler son together, Tripp. Palin said the “final straw” was when Johnston told her he was going to Hollywood to see a hunting show, but actually went there to star in a music video mocking her family. Palin had said that she didn’t have her mother’s full support over reconnecting with Johnston, 20. She said both her mother and father Todd worried that she would get hurt again. Relations between the Associated Press Bristol Palin, daughter of former Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin, and Levi Johnston have called off their second engagement after he told her he may have fathered a baby with another woman. Palins and Johnston and his family have frequently been strained since the couple broke off their first engagement soon after their son was born in late December 2008. Sarah Palin, the 2008 GOP vice presidential nominee, told People that she hopes her daughter will “move forward in life with her same forgiving, gracious, optimistic spirit, but from henceforth she’ll know to trust but verify.” Will.i.am opposes new Michael Jackson album Associated Press NEW YORK — A new Michael Jackson album is expected by the end of the year, culled from unreleased material in his vaults. But Jackson collaborator and Black Eyed Peas frontman will.i.am is vehemently opposed to the idea. “I don’t think that should ever come out. That’s bad,” he said. “He was a perfectionist and he wouldn’t have wanted it that way. How you gonna release Michael Jackson when Michael Jackson ain’t here to bless it?” Will.i.am collaborated with Jackson on the rerelease of “Thriller” in 2008. He said Jackson was very particular about all aspects of his musical productions. “Now that he is not part of the process, what are they doing? Why would you put a record out like that? Because he was a friend of mine, I just think that’s disrespectful,” he said. “What’s wrong with what he already contributed to the world?” The Jackson estate did not respond to a request for comment. >ÞÊ ÀÃÃÜÀ`Ê*Õââi 10B • Wednesday, August 4, 2010 • The Paducah Sun paducahsun.com Your Home Deserves the Best! s9EAR7ARRANTY s-AINTENANCEFREE s,OW%COATING s3TRONGERTHAN6INYL s7ILLNOTROTORWARP s%NVIRONMENTALLYFRIENDLY s$AYMONEYBACKGUARANTEE s-ANYSTYLESTOCHOOSEFROM s$OUBLE(UNG s3LIDER s#ASEMENT s"AYOR"OW s"ASEMENT s3PECIALTY3HAPES TRUCOATING Eight Exterior Colors Three Interior Woodgrains SLIDING PATIO DOORS !LLTHEBESTQUALITIESOFAWINDOW ANDADOORCOMBINED s3TEELPISTONSWITHONEEASYMOTION sHARDWARESTYLES s9EARWARRANTY s/PERATIONALEASE 6ENETIAN"LINDS Low profile operator to raise and lower internal shade.
