HOSA Welcomes J.R. Martinez
HOSA is honored to have J. R. Martinez as the
keynote speaker at its 35th Anniversary Celebration! J.R. is a dancer, actor, spokesman and retired
soldier. He has been featured in the Los Angeles
Times, The Washington Post and The New York
Times and has appeared on The Oprah Winfrey
Show, 60 Minutes, The View, CNN, FOX News, Good
Morning America, Rachel Ray, Univision, along
with other major national outlets.
What makes J.R. Martinez special?
As a dancer, he and his dance partner Karina
Smirnoff won the season 13 Dancing with the Stars
coveted mirror ball trophy. He was also featured
on the cover of People Magazine and was one of
their 25 Most Intriguing People of the year.
As an actor, J.R. played ‘Brot Monroe’ on the Emmy
Award winning daytime drama All My Children.
Due to his popularity on this show, what started
as a three month story arc, developed into a three
year stint. His role as an injured Iraq combat veteran mirrored his
own life.
Jose Rene Martinez was born in Shreveport, Louisiana, to Maria
Zavala. He has two sisters, Consuelo and Anabel, who were raised in
El Salvador with his mother’s family. Anabel died as a toddler before
he ever met her.
After high school in Dalton, GA he joined the army. J.R. was proud to
serve, as a way to give something back to a country that had already
given so much to him and his family. In September of 2002, J.R.
underwent Basic and Advanced Training at Fort Benning, Georgia,
where he gained skills as an 11-B Infantryman. After reporting to
Fort Campbell, Kentucky, in January of 2003, he was assigned to
the 2nd Battalion, 502nd Infantry Regiment of the 101st Airborne

In March of 2003, J.R. was deployed to Iraq, and
on April 5, less than a month into his deployment, he was serving as a driver of a Humvee in
Karbala, when his left front tire hit a land-mine.
Three other soldiers with J.R. were ejected from
the burning vehicle, but he was trapped inside
and suffered smoke inhalation and severe burns
to more than 40 percent of his body.
J.R. was eventually sent to Brooke Army Medical
Center in San Antonio, Texas. where he spent 34
months in recovery and underwent 33 different surgeries including skin grafts and cosmetic
surgery.
During his time in recovery, a nurse asked him
to speak to a burn patient, who had just seen his
body for the first time and had become withdrawn. After an approximate 45-minute visit,
the patient opened the curtain letting light in
his room and his heart. J.R. then understood the
impact he had on this patient and decided to use
his experience to help others, visiting with several of the patients in
the hospital, sharing his story and listening to theirs.
J.R. continues to share his story of resilience and optimism. He
understands the true value in making the most of every situation.
While J.R.’s experience was certainly life-changing, amazingly he
claims this is actually a change for the better. “I discovered it is what
is inside a person that matters most and I wouldn’t change anything…
absolutely anything!” states J.R. “I do believe everything happens for a
reason, and I’m extremely grateful for that day because it led me into
this life!”
J.R.’s story from a patient’s perspective will help us to understand
the impact we, as healthcare providers, have on each patient
we serve. HOSA is proud to honor J.R. at this year’s National
Leadership Conference for his heroism – his wanting to make a
difference in the lives of others! His website: www.knowjr.com

Conference Information
Sleeping Rooms
A good reputation enables members to take pride in their organization. HOSA members have an excellent reputation. Conduct at any
HOSA function, whether it is a general session or in the cleanliness
of a sleeping room, should make a positive contribution to the reputation that has been established.
Please check rooms before departure from the hotel to ensure that
they are left in a reasonable condition. Delegates are responsible for
any vandalism and will be expected to pay any and all damages.
Conference Message Center
A message board is available at all times for any schedule changes,
special announcements, and messages for individuals by state at
the Conference Headquarters located outside the North Registration
Desk.
Conference Name Badges
permitted in several of the events. Be sure you know the rules or ask
questions!
Competitive Event Judges and Personnel
Competitive event personnel and judges are asked to read the
agenda carefully. It is essential that all personnel be at the event site
in advance of the posted times. It should be remembered that event
judges and personnel are “very important persons” at the National
Leadership Conference. When opportunities arise, please tell these
volunteers how much we appreciate the contributions they are
making to HOSA and the 2012 NLC.
National Officer Campaigning
Verbal campaigning may begin after the national officer candidate
slate is announced by the Nominating Committee.
Local and State Advisors’ Orientation
Meeting
Conference name badges must be worn at all times while at the
Conference. The name badge serves as the entry to all official
conference functions including general sessions, business session,
workshops, and for bus transportation to competitive event sites. For
security purposes, do not wear the conference badge while touring
the city, etc.
All local and state advisors are encouraged to attend the orientation meeting on Wednesday from 1:30 – 2:30 PM in Fiesta 6. All
conference chairmen will be present. Any changes in the program
will be given at this time. This orientation is provided to ensure a
smooth-running competitive events program and conference.
For conference activities, wear your name badge in plain sight to
ensure your admittance to conference functions. Replacement
badges are $5 and can be obtained at the Conference Headquarters
with proper identification.
Each state selects students and advisors to serve on the Conference
Courtesy Corps. Members of the Courtesy Corps and Host Committee
will assist in all aspects of the conference. The success of the National
Leadership Conference is due in large part to the efforts of the
Courtesy Corps. Thanks to all Courtesy Corps members.
Admission Tickets
Delegates must have tickets to attend the Opening General Session,
Recognition Session, and the Awards Session. Only registered delegates and guests may attend the General Sessions and entertainment
activities. A name badge must be visible at all times. Tickets are NOT
required for admittance into Educational Symposium workshops and
seating is on a first-come basis. We encourage you to attend each
workshop for which you have an interest.
HOSA Competitive Events Information
Fifty-six competitive events will be conducted in six program
areas at two levels at the National Leadership Conference. HOSA
competitive events are conducted as incentives for HSE students
to be recognized for achievement related to career and leadership
development. Competitive events are designed to complement the
health science technology education programs through application
of the instruction received. This practical experience assists the HOSA
member in developing the knowledge, skills, and attitudes required
to deliver quality health care.

her state advisor. All voting delegates or alternate must attend the

be enthusiastic but delegates must not be rude or
obnoxious to those in the audience or on stage. It is
important to remain seated until the end of the session.
States that do not adhere to general session protocol will
be asked to send a representative to a special meeting of
the National Executive Council.
7. Members/participants attending the National Leadership
Conference may not purchase, consume, or be under the
influence of alcohol or drugs at any time. Violators will be
subject to stringent disciplinary action.
8. HOSA is a smoke-free conference and smoking is not
allowed at any official function. Delegates must adhere to
all hotel policies regarding smoking as well.
9. Students who disregard the rules will be subject to disciplinary action and will be sent home at their own expense.
Parents will be notified.
Common Sense Safety Tips
for Conference Attendees
Please read carefully these safety tips to be followed for
security purposes:
• Wear your conference badge at all times while
attending all sponsored HOSA functions but
remember to remove it when you are outside the
hotel.
• Do not give your room number to strangers; do not
leave public establishments with strangers or invite
them to your room.
34
• Keep valuables and extra cash in a hotel safety box.
• Keep your room key with you.
• Do not leave your room door open while you visit
other rooms.
• Carry a belt pack or a small purse that falls under your
upper arm. Long straps are easy targets.

In Memoriam
Thomas Luciano, South Mecklenburg HOSA’s Parliamentarian and a member of the
Executive team which planned and led the monthly HOSA meetings, was truly a remarkable
young man. At the North Carolina HOSA SLC, he served as a Voting Delegate and represented
HOSA District 6 as a spokesperson. Thomas died in a automobile accident the day he returned
from the state conference.
Olga Rivera, Thomas’ mother said that because of his relationship with God, he was kind, friendly,
positive and did not hold grudges. He had a great heart and an even greater smile. Thomas was so
proud of winning 1st place in Parliamentary Procedure. On the day of the accident he was wearing
his medal. This was Thomas’ last ‘Hurrah’. I loved being his Mom.
Nae Won, NC HOSA Vice-President shared that Thomas was someone that everyone could rely
on. He was so excited when he was asked to represent District 6 during the Business Session
at this year’s State Leadership Conference. He lived by the HOSA mission, treating everyone
with compassion.
Thomas’ peers in HOSA shared that Thomas was a great friend and it was a privilege to know
him. He will never be forgotten and will be forever missed. Because of Thomas’ great character,
personality and love of life, the school rock has been painted the sediment that all who knew
him share: “Live like Luciano”.

Tips for Getting Around Walt Disney World
There is a clear advantage to holding a convention in a location with
free transportation and lots to do in your free time. However, with
added opportunity comes added responsibility. It is important that
you understand how to use the transportation, and even more important that you have the permission of your chapter advisor or chaperone whenever you leave your hotel.
How to Get Around Walt Disney World
Buses connect Parks (Magic Kingdom, Epcot, Disney’s Animal Kingdom, Disney’s Hollywood Studios, and both water parks) and Downtown Disney - with hotels. They run about every 20 minutes, and it
usually takes 15 – 20 minutes to get from a hotel to a theme park, or
from a theme park to a hotel.
If you want to travel from one hotel to another, simply take a bus to
any theme park or Downtown Disney, and then transfer to the hotel
bus.
54
If you are at a theme park and need to get back to your hotel at a specific time, give yourself an hour.
Smart HOSA members always make sure they have travel insurance.
Travel insurance? You may call it cab fare. It’s that $20 in your pocket
that you may need to use if suddenly you realize you are running
behind schedule and need to be a certain place at a certain time. Taxi
cabs are readily available, reasonably priced, and worth every penny if
they keep you from missing curfew.
When in doubt about where to catch a bus, or a cab, ask a Disney cast
member.
Mostly importantly, no matter where you are or where you are going,
always keep your chapter advisor informed.
START STRONG.
SM
Enrolling in Army ROTC is a great way to combine your
nursing career with service to your country. Because
Army nurses are both caregivers and leaders, you’ll
develop a wide range of skills that will help you excel
in your field. Plus, you could qualify for a full tuition,
merit-based scholarship, and upon graduate earn a
commission as a second lieutenant in the Army Nurse
Corps. There’s strong. Then there’s Army Strong.
