Unit 1 The Dynamics of Business and Economics 5 days
Essential Question: How does the economy affect business?
Learning Targets
1. The students will define basic concepts such as business, product and profit.
2. The students will identify the main participants and activities or business, and explain why
studying business is important.
3. The students will define economics and compare the four types of economic systems.
4. The students will describe the role of supply, demand, and competition in a free-enterprise
system.
5. The students will specify why and how the health of the economy is measured.
6. The students will trace the evolution of the American economy, and discuss the role of the
entrepreneur in the economy.
Unit 2 Business Ethics and Social Responsibility 8 days
Essential Question: What are codes of ethics and what is its importance in business and in
community?
Learning Targets
1. The students will define business ethics and social responsibility and examine their
importance in business.
2. The students will detect some of the ethical issues that may arise in business.
3. The students will specify how businesses can promote ethical behavior.
4. The students will explain the four dimensions of social responsibility.
5. The students will debate an organization’s social responsibilities to owners, employees,
consumers, the environment and the community.
Unit 3 Business in a Borderless World 8 days
Essential Question: How has going global changed the way we do business?
Learning Targets
1. The students will explore some of the factors within the international trade environment
that influence business.
2. The students will investigate some of the economic, legal-political, social, cultural, and
technological barriers to international business.
3. The students will specify some of the agreements, alliances, and organizations that may
encourage trade across international boundaries.
4. The students will contrast two basic strategies used in international business.

Essential Question: How does the role of e-commerce factor into the business structure?

1. The students will summarize the role and impact of technology in the global
environment.
2. The students will specify how information is managed, and explain a management
information system.
3. The students will define e-business and discuss the e-business models.
4. The students will identify the legal and social issues of information technology and ebusiness.
Unit 5 Options for Organizing Business 5 days
Essential Question: How does a business form?
Learning Targets
1. The students will define and examine the advantages and disadvantages of the sole
proprietorship form of organization.
2. The students will identify two types of partnership and evaluate the advantages and
disadvantages of the partnership form of organization.
3. The students will describe the corporate form of organization and cite the advantages and
disadvantages of corporations.
4. The students will define and debate advantages and disadvantages of mergers,
acquisitions and leveraged buyouts.
Unit 6 Small Business, Entrepreneurship and Franchising 8 days
Essential Question: What is the difference between small business and a franchise?
Learning Targets
1. The students will define entrepreneurship and small business.
2. The students will investigate the importance of small business in the US economy and
why certain fields attract small business.
3. The students will specify the advantages of small business ownership.
4. The students will summarize the disadvantages of small business ownership, and analyze
why many small businesses fail.
5. The students will describe how you go about starting a franchise and what resources are
needed.
Unit 7 Management, Organization, Teamwork and Communication 5 days
Essential Question: What are the role and responsibilities of a manager and how do employees
give feedback to their superiors?

6. The students will distinguish between groups and teams, and identify the types of groups
that exist in organizations.
Unit 8 Marketing 6 days
Essential Question: How does marketing play a role in function of business?
Learning Targets
1. The students will define marketing and explain its key role in business enterprises.
2. The students will explain how marketing benefits all businesses.
3. The students will define marketing mix.
4. The students will describe current trends that affect the marketing mix.
5. The students will describe the market research process.
6. The students will develop and defend a product in a class Shark Tank experience.
Unit 9 Accounting and Financial Statements 5 days
Essential Question: How is money regulated?
Learning Targets
1. The students will define money, its functions and its characteristics.
2. The students will describe the various types of money.
3. The students will specify how the Federal Reserve Board manages the money supply and
regulates the American banking system.
4. The students will identify some sources of short-term financing.
5. The students will specify how companies finance their operations and manage fixed
assets with long-term liabilities, particularly bonds.
6. The students will describe the various securities markets in the United States.
7. The students will develop and evaluate a personal budget for one year into postsecondary
or work experience.
