Series Description
The Advances in Educational Marketing, Administration, & Leadership (AEMAL) Book Series strives to
provide publications that address all these areas and present trending, current research to assist professionals,
administrators, and others involved in the education sector in making their decisions.
Introduction
The work of service-learning has been around since the 1960s, and the literature on the implementation of it,
primarily in the higher education context, has developed over the last two decades to include publications in
peer-reviewed journals and chapters in edited books. Collectively, the research to date indicates that servicelearning is becoming more frequently implemented across educational contexts to help students find their place
in the world, where they have power and agency, and where they can make a change. However, there are few
edited collections solely focused on the implementation of service-learning in all educational contexts. There
are chapters on service-learning embedded in edited books on related topics (e.g., “Engaging STEM: ServiceLearning, Technology, Science Education and Community Partnerships” in Higher Education, Emerging
Technologies, and Community Partnerships: Concepts, Models and Practices)However, there isn’t a collection
solely dedicated to service-learning. The few edited collections published to date focus mostly on the
implementation of service-learning in the higher education context. It goes without saying that it is necessary to
focus on the research on the practical aspects of service-learning implementation in all educational contexts. So,
it is beneficial to have an edited collection focused on service-learning in multiple educational contexts, that
spotlights current practice, pedagogy, and research.
Objective of the Book
The "Handbook of Research on Community Engagement in 21st Century Education" examines how
community-engagement is carried out in various educational contexts in the 21st Century. The handbook
highlights a variety of community-engagement projects carried out across various educational contexts,
including the PK-12 and higher education contexts, the traditional and online classrooms, and in volunteer
organizations. The book provides PK-12 teachers and administrators, university faculty and administrators,
community volunteers - "change agents" - with information and ideas for preparing everyone to be successful
members in a global society.
Target Audience
The book provides PK-12 teachers and administrators, university faculty and administrators, and community
volunteers - all "change agents" - with the research, information, and ideas they need to implement community-
engagement in their classrooms, both face-to-face and online. Therefore, this book would be an important
resource for PK-12 teachers and administrators considering implementing community-engagement in their
educational context and wondering how others have implemented it in similar contexts to help prepare students
to be successful in a global society. The book would also be a significant resource for university faculty and
administrators who are also interested in implementing community-engagement within the higher education
context to build bridges between the university and their communities.
