A note from our Department Chair
The multitude of opportunities for students that the Enlarged City School
District of Middletown offers its students set this school district apart from
the rest. Among these is an outstanding music program staffed by talented
teachers who are committed to students.
This evening these music educators step off the podium and out of the classroom to take center stage as they share their talent. Our music faculty is representative of what is special about Middletown Schools. It is a community
of teachers that not only believe in the power of music but who have the
distinct ability to bring out the best qualities of our children.
Why do we teach music? Because there is more than one way to be smart.
Music is hardwired into our souls. It has existed in all cultures since the dawn
of humankind. Children can learn countless ways to appropriately and effectively express their feelings through the arts. Music is entertainment. Quality,
thought-provoking entertainment makes people happy and happy people
make the world better. Studying a musical instrument teaches persistence,
discipline, humility and the rewards of hard work. Making music creates millions of new pathways in the brain as well as bringing family, friends and communities together, helping to see each other as vulnerable, creative beings. We
teach music because the world would truly be a better place if everyone
learned to truly listen. And perhaps most importantly, in a world of such
frightening conflicts and lightning-fast change, we all need as many reminders as we can get that life is beautiful.
