Textbook: You are not required to buy a textbook. The text material will be online. If, however, you would like to buy a
hard copy of the textbook, the text that we will use is Mathematics All Around, 4th Edition (Custom Package); by
Thomas L. Pirnot; Pearson Custom Publishing; ISBN 0-558-326153-0
Calculator: You may use any calculator for this course, but you will need a scientific calculator at minimum. A Ti-83 or
Ti-84 is highly recommended. If you don't have access to a Ti-83 or Ti-84, then some basic calculators that should suffice
are the Ti-30XS Multiview, Ti-34 Multiview, and the Ti-36. Your cell phone calculators will not be permitted in class or on
any exam.
How the course works: There are 5 subjects (think of them as chapters). Each subject is divided into lessons. For each
lesson, you should FIRST read the text material and watch the videos. After that, take the Diagnostic quiz for that lesson.
If you pass the Diagnostics quiz, then you have passed the lesson. If not, you will be able to take a "Test Your Skills" quiz
for the same lesson. You will need to score at least a 70% on the Test Your Skills quiz to complete the lesson. You have
only one chance to pass the Diagnostics quiz, but you will have unlimited chances to pass the Test Your Skills quiz. (The
"Diagnostics" and "Test Your Skills" scores are NOT used in the calculation of your final grade.)
Once you have passed all of the lessons in a subject, you will earn a Subject Badge. When you earn the badge, you will get
FULL CREDIT (100%) of all of the badge's worth, regardless of your scores on the quizzes. Each badge is worth 4% of your
total grade. After receiving each badge, you should take that subject's exam.
Grading: Each Subject Badge is worth 4% of your grade, and each exam is worth 10% of your grade. (The "Getting
Started" badge doesn't count towards your grade. Note that the Syllabus Quiz, Diagnostics, and Test Your Skills quizzes
are not part of your final grade. They are merely stepping stones required to earn badges.)

Exams: DO NOT start an exam unless you have the time to commit to it and finish it. Once you start the exam, the timer
starts. I will be reviewing all missed problems on all of your exams, so if I deem that you deserve any credit (full or partial)
for one of your answers, your score will be adjusted.
ALL EXAMS MUST BE SCHEDULED AND TAKEN IN A TESTING CENTER RUN BY THE UNIVERSITY ACADEMIC SUCCESS
PROGRAMS. It is not possible to access a test without a password that will be provided by the testing center. It is highly
recommended that you schedule to take an exam as soon as you finish a unit while the information is still fresh in your
mind. It is required for you to bring headphones to the computer lab for taking the exam.
Participation Points are part of your grade. To avoid losing participation points, you must stay both "On Track" and on
schedule. You may also lose participation points if you are not working on MAT 142 during lab. Lab time is not to be used
for social networking (i.e. Facebook).
Attendance: There is an attendance policy for this class. For classes that meet twice each week, such as ours, the
maximum number of absences tolerated is 4. Any student that arrives to class more than 10 minutes late will be recorded
as absent. A student that leaves a lab early may also be recorded absent. Any student that accumulates more than 4
absences will receive a grade of EN, which translates to an E on their transcript.
What if I am LOCKED out of a section? The system may "lock" you out of a lesson and stop you from moving on. One
reason may be that the system hasn't updated yet (wait 15 minutes and check again). The most likely cause for a lesson
being locked is that one or more of the previous sections have not been completed. To check completion, you can use the
"Dashboard" or you must manually check all previous sections (from the menu on the left side of your screen). If you
haven't completed a section, you will need to pass the "Test Your Skills" quiz for that section in order to unlock the other
lesson.
Some lessons are tougher than others. I recommend getting through subjects 1 and 2 as fast as you can comfortably do
so. In the past, subjects 3 and 5 have been the toughest on students in general.
Try your best to stay on, or better yet, AHEAD of the following schedule. If you are getting close to test deadlines, you
should consider your grade in danger and immediately pick up the pace. If you don't meet an exam's "Absolute Deadline",
then your score on that exam will be a zero.

Not only is April 30 the deadline for exam 5, it is also the deadline for ALL assignments and quizzes.
No assignment or quiz will receive credit after April 30.
Student Resources / Computer Lab

Your primary resource for tutoring is the computer lab. During non-class and non-testing times, tutors will be
available to answer questions for you regarding the course content. You can also visit the Student Success Center.
Specific hours for when a MAT 142 tutor is available at the Student Success Center can be found on their webpage at:
http://studentsuccess.asu.edu.



If you own a laptop computer, you are encouraged to bring it with you to the computer lab when you are working on
course content or taking an exam.
The Technology Studio can check your laptop or personal computer free of charge to make sure you are ready to
access all the course content from your computer. If you choose to use your laptop for exams, the Technology Studio
can also assist you in installing the secure browser required for testing.
You must wear headphones while in the computer lab and while using your computer in class.
How to Succeed in this Course
Staying on schedule according to schedule included below and “on track” is a critical component of student success in
this course. Stay ahead of schedule and make sure you are aware of all the resources available to you that are listed in
the syllabus and on the course site so you don’t fall behind.
