PARISH BULLETIN BOARD FROM THE OGLE OFFICE Dear Friends, Halloween is just a few days away, and is now one of the biggest commercial holidays in our country. Younger people are some‐
times surprised to learn that Halloween has deep roots in the Christian liturgical calendar. The word “Hallows” in Old English meant “Holy” or Saints”. All Saints Day was also called “All Hallows Day”, and the evening before was All Hallows Eve (similar to “New Year’s Eve”). Even in the prayer “Our Father”, we say “Hallowed be thy Name”, meaning “May all people consider your name Holy.” Many cultures since ancient times have observed a feast of some kind to remember the dead. In many cases these feasts were marked by fear of evil spirits. However, the Christian understand‐
ing sees them as part of the Church Triumphant in heaven or the Church Suffering in Purgatory. Thus, in Christian times the celebra‐
tion of Halloween has taken on comical overtones, since we know that since the Resurrection of Christ, Death has no more power over the faithful. There is no harm in having childish fun with Hal‐
loween costumes, presuming Christian modesty of course. A more serious matter is our observance of All Saints Day itself, which is a holyday of obligation for attending Mass. It is the day when we remember all the saints whose names may be no longer familiar to us, and seek their intercession at God’s throne. Just as we strive for holiness in our earthly lives we honor those who have succeeded in that struggle, and ask their help as we do the same. Finally, on All Souls Day, November 2, we pray in a serious manner for the souls in Purgatory. Purgatory is a church teaching which is one of the greatest revelations of God’s mercy for us. It is not a place per se (since the afterlife is beyond space and time) but rather an experience of purification before entering into the full‐
ness of God’s glory. We might compare it to being invited to a formal dinner requiring elegant evening dress. Showing up in jeans and sneakers would not gain us admission. No one can enter God’s presence with any vestige of sin, and rare is the person who leaves this life without some imperfection. (This is why we should be careful about “canonizing” any human being at their funeral Mass, which should be seen a plea for God’s loving mercy for an imperfect human who has been redeemed by the blood of Christ, not by their own good works, no matter how commendable.) Thanks be to God, we can experience an intermediary state of purification that will allow us to experience the bliss of the Beatific Vision in heaven. Furthermore, because we are all part of the “communion of saints” our prayers and sufferings here on earth can benefit the souls in Purgatory even as our prayers benefit those on earth. In his 2007 encyclical Spe salvi, Pope Benedict XVI with typical lucidity applies to the purgation of souls after death the words of St. Paul in 1Corinthians 3:12–15 about some being "saved, but only as through fire"; in the encounter with Christ after death, Christ's "gaze, the touch of his heart heals us through an undeniably painful transformation 'as through fire'. But it is a blessed pain, in which the holy power of his love sears through us like a flame, enabling us to become totally ourselves and thus totally of God". God love you, Msgr. Ogle DE EL PASTOR Queridos Hermanos, Halloween es sólo unos días y ahora es una de las mayores fiestas comerciales en América. Jóvenes a veces se sorprendió al enterarse de que Halloween tiene raíces profundas en el calendario litúrgico cristiano. La palabra "Hallows" en inglés antiguo significa "Sagrado" o “de los Santos". Todos los Santos también fueron llamado ‘’All Hallows Day” ("Día de muertos"), y la noche anterior fue All Hallows Eve (parecido a "Nochevieja"). Incluso en la oración "Padre nuestro", decimos “Hallowed be thy name” o "Santificado sea tu nombre", significando "Que todos consideren Tu nombre santo." Muchas culturas desde tiempos inmemoriales han observado un festín de algún tipo para recordar a los muertos. En muchos casos estas fiestas fueron marcadas por el temor de los espíritus malignos. No hay ningún daño en la diversión infantil con disfraces de Halloween, suponiendo que la modestia cristiana por supuesto. Un problema más serio es la observancia de Todos los Santos, que es un día de precepto para asistir a Santa Misa. Es el día cuando recor‐
damos a todos los Santos familiares y cuyos nombres ya no pueden ser familiares para nosotros, y buscan su intercesión en el trono de Dios. Al igual que nos esforzamos por santidad en nuestras vidas terrenales honrar a aquellos que han tenido éxito en esa lucha y pedir su ayuda como hacer lo mismo. Finalmente, el día de los difuntos, el 2 de noviembre, oramos de manera seria para las almas del purgatorio. El Purgatorio es una Igle‐
sia enseña que es una de las mayores revelaciones de la misericordia de Dios para nosotros. No es un lugar propiamente (desde el más allá está más allá de espacio y tiempo) sino más bien una experiencia de purificación antes de entrar en la plenitud de la gloria de Dios. Nos podríamos compararla a ser invitado a una cena formal que requieren elegante vestido de noche. Aparecer en jeans y zapatillas de deporte no nos gana admisión. Nadie puede entrar en la presen‐
cia de Dios con cualquier vestigio de pecado, y rara es la persona que deja esta vida sin alguna imperfección. (Por esta razón debemos ser cuidadosos acerca de cualquier ser humano en su la Misa funeral, que debe ser considerada que una súplica a Dios es amar miseri‐
cordia para un ser humano imperfecto que ha sido redimido por la sangre de Cristo, no por sus propias obras buenas, sin importar lo encomiable "canonización".) Gracias a Dios, podemos experimentar un estado intermediario de purificación que permitirá experimentar el gozo de la visión beatífica en el cielo. Además, porque todos so‐

NEW COLLECTION MILITARY SERVICES COLLECTION Bishop DiMarzio has approved a collection beginning this year and will be taken up every three years for a Military Service Collection. This collection will provide the sacra‐
ments to the men and women serving in the Armed Forces and their families, patients in VA medical centers and government employees stationed abroad. Since this is a new collection, an envelope was not provided in your envelope packet. Envelopes will be available in the vesti‐
