TRAILL INTERNATIONAL SCHOOL January 2015 MESSAGE FROM THE PRINCIPAL I would like to extend a very warm welcome back this term, and wish everyone in our school community a very happy and successful New Year. The early part of the term was dominated by the mock examinations which our more senior students sat. This was an invaluable opportunity for students to discover which aspects of each subject they need to work on before May, to give them the best opportunity of securing the highest grades. All examination groups will be nearing the end of their syllabuses now and the serious revision will start. All students in Year 11 and above will receive a full written report on their achievement in the mock examinations and this will be followed by a parents’ consultation meeting on 5th February. I do hope that, if your child is in Year 11 or above, you will be able to attend, as your support for your child at this time is crucial for their success. January saw the release of the results of the CIE examinations taken in November. A number of Y13 students re-sat some of their AS-Level subjects and increased their grades in doing so. This will help them tremendously in securing top grades in their final A-Level which is the combination of their AS and A2 results. However, the most spectacular results were obtained by Phu in Y9B who took his IGCSE in Physics, Mathematics and Chemistry and got an A* grade for all three! What is even more remarkable is that he achieved all of this without the help of a teacher or tutor – he taught himself. Well done Phu! Mr. Gordon Espley-Jones, School Principal 1 January 2015 TRAILL INTERNATIONAL SCHOOL January 2015 FROM THE HEAD OF PRIMARY I would like to wish you all a very Happy New Year 2015, but I first need to take you back to Thursday 11th December 2014 when all the Primary students performed in our Primary Christmas Production “Stable Manners”. It was a fantastic production, telling the Christmas story in a wonderful musical and creative way. Thanks again to all the children, teachers and TA’s and especially to Mr. David for his hard work in making this such a success! Here are some pictures from the show. 2 January 2015 TRAILL INTERNATIONAL SCHOOL January 2015 In December at the end of term the younger children also received Teddy Bears from Mrs. Traill and Father Christmas! 3 January 2015 TRAILL INTERNATIONAL SCHOOL January 2015 2015 has begun with all the children working hard and preparing for exciting International Activities in preparation for our International Week in the last week of January. You will have to wait until next month to see pictures of this wonderful event! January has also been the time to celebrate Wai Kru, where the children show respect to their teachers and give them beautiful flowers and Paan Phoom to thank them for all their hard work. สวัสดีปีใหม่ I am sure that 2015 is going to be another amazing Year, and I’m looking forward to all the learning and exciting activities coming up! Mrs. Jane Griffiths Head of Primary School 4 January 2015 TRAILL INTERNATIONAL SCHOOL January 2015 KG students have been learning all about dinosaurs. Students now know lots of dinosaur names and can tell if they are a carnivore or a herbivore. KINDERGARTEN NEWS We have made a whole range of dinosaur art ranging from colouring eggs, model dinosaurs and even pasta dinosaurs on paper. We have played with small world dinos, watched dinosaur media, played interactive dino games and even pretended to be scary dinosaurs! For one afternoon, KG2 students got to see their old friends in Year Two and play with them in the outdoor area along with Year One. Wai Kru Day took place on the 22nd January. Students sat well and concentrated during the ceremony as they learnt about a Thai cultural tradition. On the 23rd January, both classes made „toasties‟. Pupils got the chance to put ingredients into their toasties and share it with their friends. International week is about to start and our country is Thailand. Read next month‟s newsletter to find out what we studied! Mr. Angus Moore & Mr. Chris Douglas, Year 3 Teachers 8 January 2015 TRAILL INTERNATIONAL SCHOOL January 2015 YEAR 4s – WAI KRU DAY On Thursday 22nd January, Year 4 and the rest of Traill celebrated Wai Kru Day. Monic and Japan presented the Year 4 teachers with a fantastic Panpoom that each class designed and made themselves. This was Mr Joseph's first Wai Kru day, and he was thoroughly taken aback by the sincerity and humble attitude shown by all children. Mr. Joseph Gale & Mr. Richard Jones, Year 4 Teachers 9 January 2015 TRAILL INTERNATIONAL SCHOOL January 2015 YEAR 5 – WELCOME TO DODOLAND! Dear parents and friends, We have kicked off this Term 2 by fully immersing ourselves into the study of one of the most beautiful places on Earth: Mauritius. Yes, the land of the dodo bird. A true paradise for the few lucky residents and well-heeled holiday-makers. Over one century ago, Mark Twain wrote: “Mauritius was made first, then Heaven. And Heaven was copied after Mauritius.” Well, some things never change. The island in the Indian Ocean is breathtakingly beautiful indeed. I was lucky enough to visit it during the Christmas holidays and I thought such a beautiful place deserves to be known also by our Year 5 students, who soon fell in love with it. Mauritius is, in fact, Year 5‟s country of choice for the celebrations of International Week and International Day. We have been studying its amazing nature, culture and kaleidoscope of people. Our children have handcrafted a giant and colourful Dodo, fully displayed in the hall, plus countless other displays, including barracuda and dorado fish, tortoises, octopi, sugar canes and information sheets on the island‟s rich history and culture. I am truly impressed by the efforts and energy our Year 5s have put into this topic. I really hope that ALL of them will be lucky enough to afford a visit to this paradisiac country one day. Mr. Lawrence Tomasi, Year 5 Teacher 10 January 2015 TRAILL INTERNATIONAL SCHOOL January 2015 Crazy Science is Back and Even Crazier! We have a new team of young scientists, some old faces and some new faces amongst them. This term we have some exciting new experiments to try out; including making an Obleck Slime picture, colourful milk and candy crystals! So far this month the young scientists have been looking at rockets. We made tea bag rockets, which used the warm air to make them rise, and balloon rockets which used the power of air to create thrust in movement. Ms. Stacy Corless, Year 6 Teacher & KS2 Coordinator 11 January 2015 TRAILL INTERNATIONAL SCHOOL January 2015 FIGHTING FIT FOR 2015! In Year 6 our topic this term is all about the heart and circulation. The children have been finding out how to keep their bodies in top „physical, mental and emotional‟ form. They have realized that a happy person is also a healthy person; so a balanced diet, a good night‟s sleep and regular exercise is essential to keeping us at our best. The Year 6 was invited to Coach JR‟s (Mrs Carmen‟s son) Lion‟s Head Boxing Gym to try out different kinds of exercise and see what effects they had on their bodies and hearts. The children found that some exercises speeded up their heart a lot, whilst others made their muscles ache. They learned that a combination of both types of exercise helps to keep their body healthy and strong. WAI KRU This is the month when the children show respect to their teachers, and adults who help them. The Year 6 enjoyed making their Paan Phoom– a cat! And it was the winning Paan Phoom for the Primary school – well done Year 6! Bouquet, 9B Prai, 9B The nine students who were presented with Merit Certificates this month are: Mary, 7A Tent, 7B Chloe, 7B Anne, 7B 15 January 2015 Kaylah, 7B TRAILL INTERNATIONAL SCHOOL January 2015 During January, students from across the school have been writing short stories with the theme of Taking Risks. All the budding writers are hoping that their exciting story will be the winner and the competition is strong. Students in Primary from Y3-6 have been tasked with writing no more than 600 words, although there are many I‟m sure would like to write much, much more! Secondary students had a longer word limit of 1000 words and some of their ideas really show they have thought outside the box when it came to the Taking Risks themes. Some classes in preparation for their competition entries made Mini Books; many from Mr. Ashley‟s classes are displayed in B31. We are looking for the „Best in Year‟, „Best in Primary‟ and „Best in Secondary‟ and deliberations have already begun with class teachers putting forward their top stories. I am looking forward to judging the entries along with Mrs. Jane. The „Best in Primary‟ winner and „Best in Secondary‟ winner will be put forward into the FOBISIA Short Story Competition in March, hosted by The Garden International School and will have the chance to win a signed book by young adult author Jenny Valentine. Check out more about Jenny Valentine here http://www.teenreads.com/authors/jenny-valentine Good luck to all who entered and watch out for the Traill winners being announced in February‟s Newsletter! Do please click „like‟ for any of the art you are impressed with, and especially the Traill Students‟ art that you appreciate. The Royal Overseas League rules for the competition are, the more Facebook „likes‟ an art work receives, the better the student‟s chance will be to participate in the semi-finals of the competition. You will know the Traill International students‟ works by seeing Ms, Sarah M. Bond‟ likes‟ and my „share‟, besides seeing also many other Traill students „liking‟ their fellow students‟ incredible art work. Please do not comment on the identity of the student or reveal on the comment stream the the name of the student‟s school. We need to be sensitive to the judging process, making it as non-bias of particular individuals or schools as possible. Thanking you ahead for viewing all the work in the competition. Kind regards, Ms Sarah Bond, Art and Design Department 19 January 2015 Royal Overseas League: Young Artist of the Year 2014 Competition Many of our best Year 10, 11, 12, and 13 Art and Design students at Traill International School have participated this month in the 2014 Royal Overseas League Art Competition. The fortunate student who does win this prestigious award in the month of March will receive The King‟s trophy, THB 100,000 and 2 return tickets to London with 5 nights accommodation at the Overseas House (headquarters of the ROSL in London). Nevertheless, each and every student from each school are winners by exposing their art works to a larger community through social media and an exhibition of semi-final works. This is a tremendous opportunity for an Art and Design student to hear what friends, family and the greater community say and feel towards their expressive and original art works. Unfortunately, we were not allowed to do any of our throwing events at the National Stadium, and, although the day went very smoothly and it was, after all, great venue, it did detract from the overall spectacle as the only field events allowed were the high and long jumps. Not surprisingly, there were many track records broken, especially in the relay races. Once again, I will certainly look forward to the BISAC Athletics in March, where I am convinced we will perform admirably. Well done to all involved. TRAILL INTERNATIONAL SCHOOL January 2015 On 29th January 2015 the year 11,12,13 business students went to “Coca-Cola World” to see how the world famous soft drink is produced and to get a better understanding of the production methods. Coca-Cola being the world‟s most well known soft drink. It is produced in 5 different plants in Thailand, one of which is Thainamthip in Rangsit where CocaCola, Sprite and Fanta are produced and bottled. Thainamthip was set up by 3 Thai businessmen. The memory zone is the entrance to Coca-Cola World and in this zone there is a picture of Thai royal family when the Coca-Cola World was opened in 2002. After being introduced to the history of Coca-Cola in Thailand our guide, Khun Rachain, gave us 10 minutes to take „selfies‟ with Thailand‟s only Polar Bear whose name is “Yindee”. This zone also showcased an old bottling machine which was an excellent example of flow production. COCA COLA WORLD The next zone up the stairs was the “Action Zone” this is where we watched a film about the history of Coca-Cola and where it was first served. Coca-Cola was first served in the Jacob‟s Pharmacy where only 9 glasses were served per-day, now Coca-Cola serves 1 billion per-day in countries all over the world. Our tour guide told us that no matter where we go in the world Coca-Cola would always taste the same and to prove this we were allowed to taste Coca-Cola from different countries like India, Saudi Arabia, Japan, Korea, China, Mexico, Ethiopia, Nigeria and he was right, it tasted the same. 26 January 2015 TRAILL INTERNATIONAL SCHOOL January 2015 In the action zone we also got to watch how Coca-Cola was brought to Thailand. The 9th president of Thailand “Pote Sarasin” was the person who brought Coca-Cola to Thailand. Coca-Cola believes in giving back to people and so they sponsor different events from music to sports and bring people together. In the action zone we were also told about how the PET bottles were made which we would get to see later from the production viewing gallery. We were then taken to the gaming zone of Coca-Cola World where Khun Rachain allowed us time to enjoy different games and gaming consoles before heading into the vintage area of Coca-Cola World. In the vintage area we were shown the old posters and bottles of CocaCola which was sold for 1baht back in the day. This area has many old fridges and other Coca-Cola antiques and it was styled like an old Coca-Cola hut that would have been popular when Coca-Cola first arrived in Thailand. The next zone was the production zone of Coca-Cola World, which is was the most interesting zone of the tour. In this zone we could see how the beverages were produced in the huge, automated machine which cost around 700 million baht! Most people would think CocaCola uses the “Flow Production” method as it produced 1250 bottles per minute but the surprise was that Coca-Cola also uses “Batch production” method as they produce different types of beverages. As we walked around they were thoroughly cleaning the machine getting ready to produce another beverage, showing their dedication to quality. We were also told that the electricity bill of the factory was 15 million baht per month. After spending some time looking at different machines and how the beverages were produced we headed back to the “memory zone” where we said goodbye and thanked Khun Rachain for the wonderful experience.
