YouCAN! stands for Youth Organizing to Understand Conflict and Advocate Nonviolence, also known as Youth Canada Association. It was formed in April 1997 in response to the need for a youth-led organization that would focus on developing solutions to address youth violence issues. We strive to promote a message of non-violence in communities across Canada and are committed to peacemaking and consensus-building through youth led initiatives which train youth in conflict resolution and the prevention of violence. Our mission is to develop and promote nationwide youth-led initiatives in non-violent conflict resolution and prevention. We facilitate training and develop such initiatives across Canada to prepare today’s youths for the challenges of tomorrow. We work to achieve this mission in cooperation with Canada’s youth by giving youth ownership of the process. This empowers youth within their communities, ensuring a future of peace created by youth for youth. YouCAN! is guided by a vision of “a nation where all youth work in partnership with their communities to grow in peaceful and conflict resolving lifestyles”. This vision is central to YouCAN!’s philosophy of peace building and non-violence. 20 1 YouCAN! believes this can be accomplished through youths working together to create a peaceful future for their schools, communities and society. The concept of for youth by youth is the basis for the organization’s structure. YouCAN! believes that an effective method of reducing the violence in our schools and communities is empowering youth to influence each other in positive ways. At YouCAN!, we believe that the federal government should support a community development approach which assists youth to develop competencies in the area of conflict resolution and violence prevention. A community development approach involving youth stresses the developmental needs of young people and the acquisition of the competencies needed for effective adulthood. This approach suggests that strategies to improve youth outcomes must provide all youth with supports for meeting needs and opportunities to build competencies. Unlike single-problem interventions and ancillary services, a community development approach involving youth focuses on what all youth need to prepare fully for effective adult lives. Key social institutions must construct an infrastructure of supports and opportunities that enable young people to meet their needs and build competencies. This approach implies that no single institution can operate independently and effectively serve youth. Families, schools, health and human services, business recreation and cultural organizations, churches and informal groups need to play major roles to assist youth to build broad competencies. Our definition of peacebuilding combines violence prevention with the processes of conflict resolution. We are currently working on several training modules in the area of conflict resolution, including: Peer-Helping, Negotiation, Mediation, Facilitation, Peace Circles, CrossCultural Conflict Resolution and Youth Taking Action. It is with a mixture of fear and frustration that we watch as the events sparked by the September 11th attacks unfold before us. Now more than ever is YouCAN!’s mission of crucial importance. In the midst of escalating amounts of violent behaviour in our schools and communities, it is exciting to be the leaders in youth-led solutions that are having tremendous success peer-to-peer. Youth are the leaders of today, not simply the leaders of tomorrow. If we are to be successful in creating a future culture of peace, youth need to begin taking action and responsibility for building this new culture. In YouCAN!’s experience, youth are ready and willing to take on this new challenge. Now that the foundation for youth-led peacebuilding initiatives has been laid, do what YouCAN! to reach out and Resolve It! An excellent way of doing this would be to get involved in our Third International Youth Conference to be held in Toronto in February 2002. As you take the time to read this report, reflect on the many accomplishments of our young peace leaders of today. Take the time to dream of the potential that exists within Canada’s borders and beyond. 3 About YouCAN! ON BEHALF OF THE BOARD ______________________________, Director ______________________________, Director 16 PUBLIC EDUCATION AND RESEARCH YouCAN! spent much of its research time and energy this year on a brief we prepared for the Justice Standing Committee on the proposed new Youth Criminal Justice Act (an act to replace the current young offenders act). We are pleased with our government’s efforts to incorporate restorative justice processes and principles to our Youth Justice System. We do, as can be expected, have some real concerns. Please visit our website at www.youcan.ca for a copy of our brief. We have also been requested to appear before the Senate Standing Committee on Legal and Constitution Affairs. Strategic planning sessions on the use of our website made it clear that our website is the most effective way to undertake public education initiatives. New blue-prints have been created and a sponsor will be sought out to redevelop our web-site in 2002. 5 YouCAN! has continued the research needed in the area of family violence. YouCAN! has developed a web-site (to be launched in 2002) on healthy relationships and family violence at www.youcanconnect.ca . Please visit the website and e-mail your comments. The www.youcanconnect.ca website will be focus group tested for much of this year. YouCAN! has partnered with the YWCA, National Youth in Care Network and Boys and Girls Clubs of Canada to promote the national “Week without Violence!”. Please visit the website at: www.weekwithoutviolence.ca. WORKSHOPS YouCAN! continues to assist community agencies with youth-led workshops on violence prevention and conflict resolution. A total of 75 workshops were given by YouCAN! youth members in 2000/2001. The following community groups are just a few of the many who requested our workshop services: • The City of Ottawa, Department of Recreation • Various schools across Canada • Big Brothers and Sisters Canada • Various Community Centres across Canada • Various Church groups • SPIDR (Society for Professionals In Dispute Resolution): Albuquerque, New Mexico • Boys and Girls Clubs of Canada • BYTE CONFERENCES AND FORUMS YouCAN! has partnered to assist with the following conferences in 2000: • CBAO: Talk works-Violence hurts youth symposium: Toronto, 2001; • CSC: Youth on Track Forum: Kingston, 2001; • CBAO: Talk works-Violence hurts youth symposium: Oakville, 2001; • R2K! Association des jeunes canadiens We have audited the balance sheet of the Youth Canada Association (YouCAN!) Association des jeunes canadiens as at March 31, 2000, the statements of revenue and expenses and changes in net assets for year then ended. These financial statements are the responsibility of the organization’s management. Our responsibility is to express an opinion on these financial statements based on our audit. Except as explained in the following paragraph, we conducted our audit in accordance with generally accepted auditing standards. Those standards require that we plan and perform an audit to obtain reasonable assurance whether the financial statements are free of material misstatement. An audit includes examining, on a test basis, evidence supporting the amounts and disclosures in the financial statements. An audit also includes assessing the accounting principles used and significant estimates made by management, as well as evaluating the overall financial statement presentation. In common with many charitable organizations, the organization derives revenue from donations and registration and membership fees the completeness of which is not susceptible of satisfactory audit verification. Accordingly, our verification of these revenues was limited to the amounts recorded in the records of the organization and we were not able to determine whether any adjustments might be necessary to revenue from donations and registration and membership fees, excess of revenue over expenses, assets and changes in net assets. In our opinion, except for the effects of the adjustments, if any, which we might have determined to be necessary had we been able to satisfy ourselves concerning the completeness of the revenue from donations and registration and membership fees referred to in the preceding paragraph, these financial statements present fairly, in all material respects, the financial position of the Association as at March 31, 2000 and the results of its operations for the year then ended in accordance with generally accepted accounting principles. As required by the Canada Corporations Act, we report that in our opinion, these principles have been applied on a basis consistent with that of the preceding year. There’s so much I could say, but an ancient proverb reminds me that, “He who talks much, listens little”. My hopes for all of our members, sponsors and friends in the next decade, is that we all will take the time to listen and to understand each other. We should learn to take the time to listen no matter what the challenges of diversity and conflict pose for us as individuals or communities. As you read this report, you will notice a number of organizational growth areas including: training initiatives, workshops, conferences, forums, public education and research. Personal highlights of this past year have been YouCAN!’s international growth, the incredible support from the Muttart Foundation for our Peacebuilders project, the growing relationship we have with MuchMusic, and the newly founded partnership with Correctional Services Canada. It’s amazing how many stories have come from participants of past training events and forums expressing how their action plans have brought about positive change. I was thoroughly impressed with the youth we trained in Prince Edward Island. They organized Scotland’s first national Peer Mediation Conference with the few tools we could send their way. Our Colombian youth expanded their action plans once they arrived home after our last national conference. They chose to further include indigenous youth from the Amazon area. I wish there was space here to talk about the many successful action plans here in Canada. YouCAN!’s immediate future promises great growth and change. This fall our all-youth National Board of Directors will develop a strategic plan to take YouCAN! to the year 2005. This winter our Peacebuilders Project will be completed with youth trainers ready to deliver eight new modules in the processes of conflict resolution and we will host four one-day youth forums across Canada. By next spring we will host our largest international youth conference to-date and our family violence website will be launched at www.youcanconnect.ca. With all of this activity, it may be hard to practice the one skill we teach most – ‘Listen..Listen..Listen.’ I think this principle is best explained this way: ‘First we must listen to ourselves, before we speak. Then we must listen with our heart not just our ears as others speak to us. Finally, when those around us are speaking things that are extremely difficult for us to listen to, that is when we must listen most.’ Thanks to all our members, advisors, directors, staff, consultants, sponsors, family and friends for your support of YouCAN! As a youth-led organization we have been faced with the challenges of empowering youth to take action on issues of violence in their communities. YouCAN! has taken on many initiatives that contribute to our vision of creating a culture of peace among young Canadians. Throughout the year we have launched many projects. The first of which is the National Peace Builders Project. This initiative has brought together resources on conflict resolution, facilitation, negotiation, mediation, peacecircles, and cross-cultural conflict resolution. These resources will enable youth and youth serving agencies from across Canada to take action in their communities. Another exciting initiative took place in February of this year. Sixty youth from across Canada gathered in Toronto, Ontario to be trained as youth facilitators. Thirty of these youth facilitators played a lead role in YouCAN!’s second national conference, Resolve it! 2000, held in Cornwall, Ontario from November 10th to 13th. The conference brought over 400 youth from across the country. A variety of workshop topics provide these youth with the tools to develop and carry out action plans in their communities. YouCAN! continues to host community forums on violence prevention and provide training workshops in conflict resolution and mediation. We have also taken great strides in youth-based restorative justice. In March of 2000 YouCAN! presented a Brief to the Standing Committee for Justice and Legal Affairs to advocate the rights of youth. We look forward to continuing our efforts in these areas. These are just a few of the many amazing initiatives that YouCAN! has had the privilege of being a part of over the last year. We could not have made these great achievements without the overwhelming support of our staff and many volunteers. We look forward to working with you towards the continued success of YouCAN! Thank you for your support, Jamie Lipp President The accompanying notes are an integral part of the financial statements. 12 9 FINANCIAL STATEMENTS AS AT MARCH 31, 2001 AUDITORS’ REPORT To the Board of Directors of the Youth Canada Association (YouCAN!)
