He was awarded the Lee Kuan Yew Gold Medal for being the top graduate in 1999, the first ever Malay to have clinched this award. Upon graduation, Khai worked for Eco.id Architects where he handled numerous residential projects including interior design and restoration. He was also involved in some of the firm’s notable commercial and hospitality projects. To widen his work repertoire and experience, Khai later joined CPG Consultants, a multi-disciplinary firm that specializes in institutional projects and masterplanning. In collaboration with world-renowned architecture firm KPF, Khai was part of the team that developed MGM’s proposal for the Integrated Resort at Marina Bay. Khai also gained valuable experience handling large scale projects in Singapore, the Middle East, China and India. Notable projects include mixed developments in Dubai, masterplanning for The Singapore Botanic Gardens as well as NTU’s Student Centre. In 2006, he helped re-establish Aamer Architects and led the firm’s signature projects. These include high-end residential developments in Singapore’s premium districts as well as a 30-storey mixed development in Penang. More recently, Khai was recognized as one of the eight emerging global talents in architecture by international magazine AMICA. Khai is a Registered Architect with the Board of Architects Singapore and he is currently the Principal of KITE Studio Architecture. Khai aims to ‘fly’ KITE to places no firms have dared venture. He is determined to bring an incomparable level of craftsmanship and detailing to his works. It is this passion and spirit of constantly approaching design with and relentlessly pursuing high standards of service that the foundation for KITE is built upon. Khai is also a familiar face in the media, having hosted many television programmes for both local and regional networks. He was also a Council Member for the National Youth Council from 2005 to 2009. In 2004, he was appointed by Minister Vivian Balakrishnan to chair the committee for the development of *scape, a youth hub at Orchard. Khai presently sits on the Board of Directors for *scape. 3 Despite his busy schedule, Khai is heavily involved in various community projects. He is currently a member of the working committee for the Redevelopment of Wisma Geylang Serai. Khai also holds the appointment of ‘Duta Bahasa’, the Malay Language Ambassador in Singapore. He was recently appointed Committee Member for the Lee Kuan Yew Fund for Bilingualism. A former student of Tampines Junior College (1992-1993), Khai distinguished himself in many areas. He displayed his many talents in various projects that he undertook in his two years at the College. As part of the College Fund Raising effort, ‘Sunday Funday’, he designed the official t-shirt. He also led the design and construction of the Haunted House, a highly successful attraction at the funfair. He was also awarded the Subject Prize for Art. 4 Principal’s Report Introduction Since her founding on 11th April 1986, Tampines Junior College has always been proud to provide a well-rounded education for her students. This year, as we celebrate 26 years of commitment to education, we remain ever focused on our mission to inspire excellence of achievement, driven by a passion for learning and a zest for life, in our students. To actualise our vision of nurturing A Leader in Every Student, we have empowered students by creating opportunities for the exercise of both self and team leadership, as well as opportunities for the acquisition of the personal and social competencies needed for effective leadership in a world increasingly wrought by uncertainty and complexity. We strive to provide them an environment that is conducive to their holistic development, so that they are better able to face life’s challenges, and shape the futures they will call their own. Student Enrolment Our current enrolment stands at 799 JC1 students and 726 JC2 students. Tampines Junior College remains a popular choice having received 311 appeals to join the College at the Joint Admissions Exercise this year. Academic Performance The ability of our students to exercise self-leadership in their learning is reflected in our improved performance at the 2011 GCE A-Level Examination. Our firm belief in, and practice of, ‘Teaching Less and Learning More’ has helped our students take ownership of their studies to become the independent, resilient, and adaptable learners needed in the future. We commend both students and teachers for their achievements. H1 Tamil Language Holistic Education Co-Curricular Activities Co-Curricular Activities (CCAs) are a vital part of the holistic education TPJC seeks to provide. CCAs offer students a plethora of opportunities to exercise and develop key leadership qualities, and our achievements are a testament of the efficacious leadership of our students and teachers. To broaden students’ experiences, we offer a range of CCA activities spanning the Performing Arts, Clubs and Societies, and Sports and Games. Opportunities are also provided for students to serve the community, for it is crucial that leaders are aware of, and are able to serve effectively, the needs of their community. Student Council There are many platforms for students to exercise leadership. Among these, the Student Council is the highest, as it reaches out to the entire student community, providing a range of 6 opportunities for councillors to be nurtured as effective leaders. Through their one year stint in the Council, councillors are given opportunities to plan, lead and organise major College events such as Open House, Orientation (Vita Nova), JC 1 Camp (Terra Nova), Teachers’ Day, JC 2 Farewell Assembly, which were well organised and coordinated, and very well received this year. Through these events, the councillors have honed their leadership, communication, presentation, and management skills, which will be of great use to them when they graduate. Furthermore, student councillors have been given opportunities to represent TPJC at external events and seminars, such as the AJC Paradigma Seminar 2011, the Student Leaders’ Congress 2011 and the RI Leadership Symposium 2012. These events have allowed our students to forge new friendships with their peers from other colleges, and to learn through the new friendships made. Performing Arts The Performing Arts provide platforms for students to exercise creativity and teamwork, as well as to develop confidence, and a sense of aesthetics. This year, our Performing Arts Groups such as the Indian Cultural Society, Guitar Club, and Guzheng Ensemble channeled their energies and passion into their performances, thrilling audiences in both competitive and non-competitive environments. We also wish to commend the Gavel Club for its achievement at this year’s Inter-Gavel Speech Competition. It also aims to equip students with leadership qualities including that of self-awareness, critical thinking, and reflexivity, and a range of skills needed when they leave TPJC, including interview skills. This year, students have been paired with a working professional based outside TPJC who acts as a mentor, enlarging students’ perspective on what it means to be successful. A series of thematic seminars have been conducted, such as a visit to the National Museum for the exhibition, Dreams and Reality, as well as a visit to the National Cancer Centre, during which students had the chance to observe science in action and to speak with research scientists. These opportunities challenge students to step beyond their zones of comfort and to understand who or what are unfamiliar people or settings. They therefore offer students authentic opportunities to develop an independent understanding of the world beyond school they are about to enter, and so some knowledge of the skills and qualities needed for future success. Community Involvement The spirit of service at TPJC was strengthened this year with both staff and student contributions to the community, reflecting our college-wide approach to community service. TPJC staff graciously devoted their time to self-initiated Community Involvement Programmes to lead by example. We worked with the Singapore Cancer Society to deliver food ration to 35 homes of cancer patients in Singapore, which proved to be a rewarding experience. We also conducted activities such as Bingo games and Karaoke sessions to liven up the atmosphere for the elderly at the All Saints Home, and undertook weeding and the sowing of seeds at the Kampung Senang Charity and Education Foundation, an organic farm in Tampines which supplies chemical free vegetables to elderly and children under their care. We hope these fulfilling experiences will inspire and spur our students to become more sensitive to the needs of the community and render help to those in need. TPJC students were themselves heavily involved in service learning, and took it upon themselves to initiate, organise, and implement programmes to benefit local communities. We have conducted projects, for example, for the All Saints Home and the Tampines Changkat Community Centre Kids Read Programme. Several groups of students went further, reaching out to the less privileged overseas by embarking on Overseas Community Involvement Programmes to Batam, Indonesia, Siem Reap, Cambodia, and Kolkata, India, which the college subsidised. Our 3R community service framework emphasises three points in the service learning process: getting Ready for service by assessing needs and identifying learning outcomes, Rendering service to the chosen community, and Reflecting on experience so as to distil it into insight. TPJC’s approach to community service stresses not only the cultivation of empathy and compassion, but also that of cross-cultural understanding, a quality that will no doubt be an asset to leaders in an increasingly cosmopolitan global society. 9 EduRace EduRace is an avenue to develop students’ sense of commitment and belonging to our community and nation through engaging their hearts and minds. Our College organised the event on 18th May 2010 for 170 participants from 3 primary and 7 secondary schools from the East Zone. This is the 3rd year which the event is being organised. It aims to promote understanding of National Education and the importance of water as a strategic resource for Singapore through interactive and engaging means. Our Guest-Of-Honour was Ms Christina Ow Yin Ting, and our main sponsor, The Cocoa Trees. We thank Mrs Esther Loo, Executive Director of The Cocoa Trees and CAC Member, for her generous support. In the spirit of collaboration, the Student Development Department worked hand in hand with Civic Councillors and the Science & Environment Club members in the implementation of the event. Several JC1 Civics Group took up the challenge of designing activities for their National Education booths to educate our young participants and to allow them to demonstrate their learning. It was heartening to see our students actively involved in the planning and organisation of this event. Humanities Week The theme of TPJC’s Humanities Week this year, “Imbricate”, fully captures our approach which was to expose participating secondary school students to a range of Humanities subjects and to help them appreciate the differences and the connections between them. This event was organised by our JC 1 Humanities students and tutors, and featured booths put up by the various Humanities disciplines (Art, China Studies, Economics, Geography, History, Literature, Theatre Studies) in our college. Our students acted as guides for our secondary school guests, introducing them to the school and bringing them around to the various booths. These booths included a play by our very own Theatre Studies students, and activities including one which allowed students to design their own pottery. Our students enjoyed the event thoroughly and showed great passion in imparting their knowledge to their guests. But most importantly, the opportunity to exhibit their own creativity in designing and running the booths boosted their confidence as well as leadership skills in organisation, coordination, and teamwork. 10 International Education TPJC believes that overseas immersion programmes are important components of our students’ education as they broaden perspectives, deepen insights and nurture character. Importantly, they allows our students to build cross-cultural competencies that are vital in a globalising world. We provide opportunities for every student to enjoy a rich and interesting, but rigorous, educational experience beyond the classroom. The programme, organized by our Science Department, comprised of a college immersion experience and a cultural/heritage experience that was held in Brunei. TPJC students were each assigned a Bruneian buddy. These buddies endeavoured to make our teachers and students feel at home. The programme was an enriching experience for our teachers and students as they have a better understanding of the Bruneian way of living, language and the education system. They visited many places of interests such as Water Village, the Royal Regalia and Temburong. Firm and lasting friendships were forged during the short stint. Arrangements were also made for PTEM teachers and students to visit our college in the near future. Singapore and China To foster greater cross-cultural awareness in our students, the Mother Tongue Languages and Humanities Department initiated an interdisciplinary Twinning Programme with Shandong Experimental School (China) from 28 November to 4 December 2011. Our students, which included one Malay and one Indian student, immersed themselves in the local environment and participated in lessons which allowed them to appreciate the beauty of Chinese culture and traditions, strengthening the ties between our College and Shandong Experimental School. Our students also visited several important cultural and historical sites like the Great Wall, the Forbidden City, and Tian’anmen Square, as well as EnGro Corporation in Shandong, a local producer of high performance cement materials that recently branched out into China, of which CAC Member Mr Tan Cheng Gay is Chairman and Chief Executive. The experience was an eye-opening and humbling one for many of our students as they realised how much they have to learn from a rising superpower. It was also heartening to witness our students cultivate important life skills and values in the process. Our Staff Our staff is instrumental to our achievements. They have added much value to our students’ learning and development by willingly giving their time to their students. A few days before the release of the GCE A-Level Examination results, he sent all his tutors a message, saying that regardless of his results, he was grateful to us for all the help that we have given him throughout his two years in College. I was touched as I could sense the sincerity in his words and impressed by the maturity of this young man who appreciated the efforts of his teachers. It is not often that a student is selected to be both the Student of the Year and the Valedictorian. This double honour is only given to those who have emulated excellence of achievement in every manner possible. This year, the individual of such calibre is Andy Lua. This young man standing before you has accomplished much during his two years in College. As the Vice-President of the Student Council, he impressed both teachers and peers with his organizational skills and charismatic leadership style. His sincere and humble personality also made him a popular figure amongst his peers. Andy once told me that it is not the achievements in life that determine one’s success but the impact one has on others and the legacy that one leaves behind. Today we celebrate not just the achievements of a young man but the person that he is and the impact he has had on his teachers and peers. Andy was a constant source of inspiration and motivation for his classmates. Not only was he an excellent student who led discussions and contributed many pertinent and insightful points, he made it a personal quest to encourage his classmates when the going was tough. In times of great stress, especially before the examinations, Andy would send personal messages to his classmates encouraging them to do their best. He strongly believes that hope would drive people to fulfill their dreams. It was the little things that he did which made him so endearing and earned him much respect along the way. Of course Andy was not immune to the pressures of academic life. Like all other students, he also struggled at times. But Andy was always consistent in his efforts to score the highest grades. It was therefore no surprise to me when he emerged as one of the top students in 30 the College, garnering 5 distinctions in the GCE A-Level examination. Andy is one of the most dynamic students I have ever taught. Indeed, he has demonstrated excellence of achievement in every manner possible. I am confident that he will be a good ambassador for TPJC, making significant and meaningful contributions to society. I wish him the very best that life has to offer. Ladies and gentlemen, I present to you Andy Lua – the Valedictorian and Student of the Year. 31 Valediction Andy Lua Jia Hui Good afternoon distinguished guests, principals, teachers, parents and TPJCians. Two years ago, at the 23rd College Day, I remember telling my Civics Tutor, Mdm Neo Sock Khim, that I would be one of those going up on stage to receive a prize during the 25th College Day. It was a promise I made to myself. Today, I am both honoured and humbled to stand before you, not as an individual receiving an award, but as a representative of the student body. Honestly, when I first entered TPJC, I felt discouraged as I had not performed well in the O-Levels. People told me it was a mistake to choose the JC education path but I am really glad that I did because in TPJC, a place I am proud to call my second home, I found a family who believed in me and who spurred me to always give of my best. JC life is arduous yet it is through these difficult times that friendship is put to the test. Remember the times spent mugging for Promos, then for Prelims? Or nights when we were rushing to meet the Project Work Written Report deadline, Web-camming with each other up to 4 a.m. in the morning as we completed our WR? Or staying in College till the attendants had to literally chase us out as we ‘chiong’ to finish as many Ten-Year Series Papers as possible? Those were difficult times yet they have left many fond memories. I am sure you remember birthday celebrations in College too. We sure know how to have fun! Did you get curry powder poured all over you? Or have pieces of raw meat thrown at your face? Many people may know me as the ‘siao kia’ or crazy guy who is always so optimistic and enthusiastic. I am like this because I have awesome friends who have always supported me. They are more than just friends; they are my family. At TPJC I had mentors rather than just teachers. Why mentors? That is because my teachers never failed to inspire me to strive beyond what I thought I could achieve. I was not the typical student who consistently got A or B grades for every examination. In fact, my grades were always fluctuating, leaving me demoralised. But my tutors never gave up on me or us for that matter. I have been blessed with exemplary role models who have never failed to touch my heart with their actions; teachers who would take time away from their families just to coach their students to perform better in all subjects; teachers who were more than happy to accept our additional assignments and to review them with us. Our teachers took the time to understand every student’s strengths and weaknesses. Teaching is not only about the imparting of knowledge but also the ability to instil confidence amongst students to inspire them to dare to dream. On behalf of all my fellow awardees, I thank all the teachers in TPJC. My TPJC experience has really been a wild one. For those of you who do not know me, I was the Vice-President of the 25th Student Council. Being a Councillor is not an easy job. We have to plan events, execute them and while doing so, have to constantly take heed of that little voice in our heads that says, ‘You have homework, you have a test, you are missing out on this and that.’ It is difficult to balance work and play but at the end of the day, ‘impossible is 32 nothing.’ As Winston Churchill once said, ‘The pessimist sees difficulty in every opportunity. The optimist sees the opportunity in every difficulty.’ I believe that if we want something badly, we will work extremely hard to achieve it. I believe that each individual has the capacity to succeed but oftentimes what hinders us is not our external environment but ourselves. To my friends and TPJCians, thank you for standing by me and for making my TPJC experience one that I will always treasure. Thank you, teachers, for inspiring us to succeed. Most importantly, thank you, Mom, for supporting the family single-handedly and for helping me come this far in life. I will always remember the sacrifices you have made and it has been a long time since I last said this to you, but I really do love you a lot. Thank you. 33 Student Achievements 1 May 2011 – 1 May 2012 Team Achievements Dept/CCA Basketball Band Achievement Boys’ Team -Quarterfinals in the National Inter-school "A" Division Basketball Championship 2011 Silver Award Choir Silver Award Guitar 4th for Overall Ensemble Singing Component – 1st place Thamizhae Amuthae Mozhi Vilaiyaattu Game Component – 2nd place Dance Component – 3rd place Impersonation Component – 4th place Overall Champion Singing Component – 1st place Dance component – 1st place Indian Cultural Society Competition Date National Inter-school 13 May 2011 "A" Division Basketball Championship 2011 Singapore Youth Festival Central Judging of Band Singapore Youth Festival Central Judging of Choirs 6th Annual Guitar Competition Anderson Junior College (AJC) InterJC Indian All Arts Competition, Agni 2012 3 May 2011 Inter JC/CI Competition, Kalai Vizha 2012 24 Mar 2012 4 May 2011 14 Apr 2012 17 Mar 2012 34 English Department Mathematics Department Individual Talent Segment – 3rd place Tamil Oratorical Component – 4th place Advertisement Component – 4th place Overall Runner-up 5th Overall Team Honours Chancellors’ Challenge 7 Apr 2012 Shield 2012 American Mathematics 22 Feb 2012 Competition Individual Achievements Name Dept/CCA Eunice Tan Li Ting 10S23 How Jun Xiang 10S02 Steven Tanuwijaya 11S05 Rock Climbing Jonathan Lim 12S10 Liew Wan Rong 12A05 Perry Ho 11S05 Li Ai 12S25 Chess Club Sun Yi 11S25 Chinese Cultural Club 35 Rock Climbing Track and Field Chess Club Chess Club Chinese Cultural Club Competition / Achievement National Schools Sport Climbing Competition Silver Medal National Schools Sport Climbing Competition Bronze Medal National Inter-School Track and Field Championships 2012 Shot Put Bronze Medal 17th Char Yong Cup 9th Position 17th Char Yong Cup 8th Position in the Girls Open Category 17th Char Yong Cup 17th Position Fo Guang Shan National Chinese Pen Calligraphy Competition Outstanding Award National Chinese Calligraphy Competition Outstanding Award (Pen Category) Date 29 Jul 2011 29 Jul 2011 3 Apr 2012 12 Mar 2012 12 Mar 2012 12 Mar 2012 14 Apr 2012 28 Aug 2011 Sun Yi 11S25 Sun Yi 11S25 Sun Yi 11S25 Sun Yi 11S09 Zhang Hangshuo 10S20 Zheng Jiaquan 11S26 Fazilah Begam 11S26 Fazilah Begam 11S26 Kavitha 12S12 Chinese Cultural Club National Chinese Calligraphy Competition Outstanding Award (Brush Category) Chinese Cultural Club Bukit Timah Community Club Chinese Calligrahy Competition Outstanding Award (Pen Category) Chinese Cultural Club Bukit Timah Community Club Chinese Calligraphy Competition Outstanding Award (Brush Category) Chinese Cultural Club National Youth Chinese Calligraphy Competition Outstanding Award Chinese Cultural Club National Chinese Calligraphy Competition (Pen Category) Outstanding Award Chinese Cultural Club National Youth Chinese Calligraphy Competition Outstanding Award Indian Cultural Society AJC Inter-JC Indian All Arts Competition, Agni 2012 Tamil Language Game Component – 2nd place Indian Cultural Society Inter JC/CI Competition, Kalai Vizha 2012 Tamil Oratorical Component – 4th place Indian Cultural Society Inter JC/CI Competition, Kalai Vizha 2012 Individual Talent Segment – 3rd place 28 Aug 2011 4 Sep 2011 4 Sep 2011 28 Jan 2012 28 Aug 2011 28 Jan 2012 17 Mar 2012 24 Mar 2012 24 Mar 2012 36 Baek Mink 11S07 Mathematics Baek Mink 11S07 Mathematics Ng Jun Rong 11S01 Perry Ho 11S05 Perry Ho 11S05 Mathematics Sun Yi 11S25 Foo Chuan Yang Jolyon’s 11S15 Ruichini Fonseka 11S07 Mathematics Ang Wei En Thaddeus 11A02 Gavel Club Marini 10S06 Gavel Club Shaik Muhammad Khairun Nabil 10A03 Gavel Club Tham Shi Ying 10S06 Gavel Club 37 Mathematics Mathematics Others Wushu Australian Mathematics Competition (AMC) Distinction Award International Competitions and Assessments for Schools (ICAS) - They were briefed by members of the EU policy directorates on global issues affecting the EU and ASEAN, as well as the workings of the EU. 2) To provide students with opportunities to work with German students • Students had the opportunity to work with German students on an insightful and meaningful project in collaboration with Terra De Hommes, an international federation that seeks to raise awareness about the need to save the environment and children’s rights. 3) To encourage reflective practices among students • Students were given the opportunity to develop their reflexivity and habit of reflection when they were given opportunities to pen their thoughts on the courses they had attended and places of interest they visited. General Paper General Paper Experiential Learning Lab/Critical Thinking Trip Paris, France / London, United Kingdom 7th to 16th June 2011 Objectives 1) To provide an opportunity for students to connect with a school that incorporates critical thinking into its entire curriculum, tying in with the English Department’s TLLM Project on Critical Thinking and its infusion in the JC1 SOW. • Students visited Lampton School in London, which incorporates critical thinking into 44 its curriculum. Our students were buddied with British students and had lessons with them. Students also attended the Da Vinci Code Walk in Paris, plus visited some of the places featured in the book. They also watched “39 Steps” and “Wicked”. All these were carefully selected to teach them how to differentiate truth from fiction, and to evaluate and sift out gossip and unreliable sources. 2) To enable students to understand how to evaluate information, and incorporate first hand research in the field • Students gave presentations on the results of Critical Thinking Quests at the end of the trip. These quests allowed students to collect information that they experienced throughout the trip to formulate answers to Quests like “On the Trail of the Da Vinci Code - how to differentiate truth from fiction” and “Education: Transmitting values of the past, or preparing for the future?” In addition, GP Lessons were conducted at night, during which students learnt to use the examples they observed during the day to support points which answered GP essay questions. The essay questions were specially selected/crafted to match the itinerary, so that students could see the connection between real world examples and their use in answering essays. There were also reflections and consolidation of information collected from visits to the British Museum, Science Museum, National Gallery, St Paul’s Cathedral, Oxford, Stratford upon Avon, the Louvre and Museum de la Musique. Students filled in a worksheet during the Seine cruise, to understand why there were so many economic, political and religious institutions along the banks of the river, and to appreciate the role rivers play in the development of cities. 3) To enable students to understand the causes and consequences of war. • Students attended a lecture during the WWII Walk in Paris and visited Versailles where the signing of the Versailles Treaty during WW1. They also visited the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier at the Arc de Triomphe, which commemorates the sacrifices of soldiers during WWI. 4) To allow students to understand diplomatic efforts of the Singapore government. • Students visited Singapore’s Embassy in Paris and met with officials to understand its role in helping Singaporeans in France as well as promoting political and economic connections for Singapore.
