ADDENDUM TO BIOLOGY 2402.S4L LAB SYLLABUS – SPRING 2016
Course Number: 2402.S4L
Course Title: Anatomy and Physiology II
Course Credit Hours: 4, Lecture Hours: 3, Lab Hours: 4
Prerequisite: BIOL 2401
Course Delivery Method: Laboratory experiments and dissections require student participation. The
instructor will do some demonstrations. Discussion of material covered in lab will precede or follow
lab topics. Computer simulations, films and other audio-visual materials may be used.

Office Hours/Open Lab in H-118: Tuesday and Thursday 12:45 – 1:00 p.m.
Please note that there will be NO office hours on days when a lab practical exam is scheduled.

Class Information: Class meets Tuesday and Thursday 1:00 p.m. until 2:50 p.m. in lab H-118.

Supplies: REQUIRED - Surgical or exam gloves, Goggles, SUGGESTED - Dissecting kit, Loose-leaf
notebook and if desired a lab coat or apron for some labs
Measurable Student Learning Outcomes:
Upon completion of this course the students should be able to do the following:
1. Identify and describe the major gross and microscopic anatomical components of the endocrine system and
explain the functional roles of their respective hormones in communication, control, and integration.
2. Identify and describe the major gross and microscopic anatomical components of the cardiovascular system
and explain their functional roles in transport and hemodynamics.
3. Identify and describe the major gross and microscopic anatomical components of the lymphatic and immune
systems and explain their functional roles in fluid dynamics along with immune interactions.
4. Identify and describe the major gross and microscopic anatomical components of the respiratory system and
explain their functional roles in ventilation and in the processes of external and internal respiration.
5. Identify and describe the major gross and microscopic anatomical components of the digestive system and
explain their functional roles in digestion, absorption, nutrition, metabolism, cellular respiration, excretion, and
elimination.
6. Identify and describe the major gross and microscopic anatomical components of the urinary system and
explain their functional roles in urine formation and elimination.
7. Identify and describe the physiology of the homeostatic mechanisms that control fluid, electrolyte, and acidbase (pH) balances.
8. Identify and describe the major gross and microscopic anatomical components of the male and female
reproductive systems and explain their functional roles in reproduction, development, and inheritance.
Course Requirements:
The laboratory will have three comprehensive practical examinations, in addition to lab quizzes,
Mastering (on-line exercises), and formal typed lab reports. All students are required to actively
participate in laboratory experiments and dissections. Students who simply observe the work of
others will not receive credit for that laboratory assignment.
Method of Evaluation:
Lab grades are 40% of overall grade.
3 major practical exams - 20% each
Quizzes (In Class & On-line) - 20%
10 of 12 In Class Quizzes (drop 2) – Half of 20%
Mastering (On-line Homework & Quizzes) – Half of 20%

3 lab reports (typed) - 20%
Lab practical exams will consist of set-up questions, words to be defined and a few bonus setups. In addition to dropping 2 quizzes, 10 bonus points will be given throughout the semester
for in class lab activities (only those who are present and participate will receive these points).
These bonus points will be added to the quiz grades before totaling your grade. Please note
that no make-up quizzes will be given. Students who miss a quiz (or two) will not have a quiz
(or two) to drop. ALSO, USE OF ELECTRONIC DEVICES DURING PRACTICAL EXAMS OR
QUIZZES WILL RESULT IN A ZERO FOR THAT ASSIGNMENT.
Attendance Policy:
Laboratory attendance and participation is mandatory. If you miss a lab, you will receive a zero for any
bonus points, quizzes or lab papers pertaining to that lab. Please e-mail or call me immediately if you
have to miss lab so that you can make up the material in another lab section before the following class.
ALL students must participate in ALL aspects of lab in order to receive a good grade in lab. Please
refer to the current Collin handbook for Religious Holy Days.
Course Withdrawal Policy:
Any student who wishes to drop the course for any reason must officially withdraw on or before the drop
date. Failure to officially drop the course will result in the student being assigned a performance grade
based on the work completed. Withdrawals after the drop date are not permitted without documentation
explaining extenuating circumstances and only then will be determined on an individual basis by the
Dean of the division. The last day to withdraw from BIOL 2402 is Mar. 18, 2016. Remember, you may
repeat this course only once after receiving a grade, including W.

Academic Ethics:

Cheating is the willful giving or receiving of information in an unauthorized manner during an examination,
illicitly obtaining examination questions in advance, copying computer or internet files, using someone else’s
work for assignments as if it were one’s own, or any other dishonest means of attempting to fulfill the
requirements of a course.
Collusion is intentionally aiding or attempting to aid another in an act of scholastic dishonesty, including but not
limited to, providing a paper or project to another student; providing an inappropriate level of assistance;
communicating answers to a classmate during an examination; removing tests or answer sheets from a test
site, and allowing a classmate to copy answers.
