Volunteer Programs

The following is a list of various volunteer positions within different departments of the hospital:

(Please note that this list does not indicate program availability.)

PROGRAM RESPONSIBILITIES PROGRAM DAYS AND TIMES

Ambassador

Communications

Cardiac Clinic

Assists patients, family and visitors to access health, hospital and community information. Provide computer support.

Creates posters, brochures, signs etc. for our Communications Department.

Welcomes and visits with patients in the

Cardiac Clinic. Assist with providing directions, completing forms and some clerical assistance required.

Monday to Saturday 10:00 a.m.-3:00 p.m. 2, 3 and 5 hour shifts

Cardiac Unit Daily 10:30 a.m. – 12:00 noon

CARE Clinic

Crafts and Knitting

Critical Care Support

Dining Enhancement

Emergency Triage

Emergency Ward

Visits with cardiac care patients and assist with escorting patients to physiotherapy classes.

Supports patients in the CARE Clinic, provides clerical support to staff, escorts patients to various areas of the hospital

Makes arts and crafts to sell in the Gift

Shop and Seasonal items for patients.

Knits baby wear, blankets and slippers.

Provides friendship to families and friends waiting for surgical patients. Serves tea and coffee, acts as a liaison between families and staff.

Socializes with geriatric patients in the ward dining room or patient’s rooms during meal times.

Provides support and information to patients and visitors in the Emergency

Room Waiting Room. Liases between triage staff and patients & escorts visitors to the bedside.

Visits with patients and their families.

Offers refreshments, acts as a liaison between families and staff.

Gardening Plant bulbs and plants, weed, water and tidy garden areas.

Seasonal

Gift Shop Sells items in the Gift Shop to the public, patients, and staff. Re stocks shelves, and clean and tidies inventory.

RESPONSIBILITIES PROGRAM DAYS AND TIMES

Provides support and encouragement to patients with cardiovascular heart issues.

*Please note: Volunteers must have cardiovascular health issues

Supports visitors to the ICU by providing access to the unit, welcoming visitors, assisting visitors to locate a patient’s room, provides pamphlets and brochures to visitors and assist the ICU staff with clerical duties.

Provides directions and information to visitors

Sells government lottery tickets to the public and staff. Training provided through

BC Lottery Corporation.

Daily Mid morning

Daily 11:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.

3:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m.

Daily 2 and 3 hour shifts

Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, Friday:

10:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m.

Wednesday 10:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m.

Sunday: 1:00 p.m. – 4:00 p.m.

Saturday: 11:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m.

Daily various times

Daily after 3:00p.m.

Provides socialization and companionship to Maternity patients.

Provides support and encouragement to open heart surgery patients.

* Please note: Volunteers must have undergone open heart surgery.

Volunteers and their pets visit selected patients. * Please note: Pets must be screened by BC Pets & Friends or St.

John Therapy Dog prior to placement.

Provides recreation and socialization programs to perinatal patients.

Visits with selected psychiatry patients.

Offer recreation programs (arts, crafts, card games etc.) with appropriate patients.

Meets and greets renal patients, welcome patients into the lounge and visit with patients and family members in lounge.

Care Patients home by taxi

Stocks shopping cart and circulates cart to nursing units offering items for sale.

Provides Therapeutic Touch.

Collects, sorts, prices and displays donated used goods. Clean and tidy inventory. Sells goods to customers.
