Term 2 Sample
Paper - 3
Solution
Time: 3 hrs
Total Marks: 90
SECTION-A
Ans1. Work is said to be done when a force acts on an object and as a result of this force the
object gets displaced from its initial position.
Ans2. An atom is a building block of all kinds of matter.
Ans3.
(i) Photosynthesis
(ii) Respiration
Ans4. Intensity of sound at a point is defined as the amount of sound energy flowing per
second normally through unit area around that point.
Loudness is a measure of amount of sensation produced in the ears of the listener.
Intensity does not depend on the listener where as the loudness depends on the listener.
Ans5.
(a) Monocots have one cotyledon where as dicots have two cotyledons.
(b) Bryophytes are called Amphibians amongst plants because they live in damp
areas as:
(i) The plant body of Bryophytes is devoid of vascular tissues, roots, etc
(ii) Like Amphibians of animal kingdom, the sperms require an external supply of
water for swimming and reaching the eggs for fertilizing the same.

(a) CFC's (Chloro fluoro carbons)
(b) The different states in which water is found during the water cycle are liquid
(water), gas (water vapour) and solid (snow).
Ans7. Similarity: Both fungi and plant cell have an outermost covering of cell wall.
Difference: In fungi, the cell wall is made up of chitin whereas in plants, the cell wall is
made up of cellulose.

(a) A cation is a positively charged atom. It is formed by the loss of one or more
electrons by an atom.
(b) A cation has more number of protons than electrons. Taking sodium atom as
example,





Sodium atom loses one electron to form sodium ion. So, the number of protons and
electrons in sodium atom and sodium ion will be:
Sodium atom: No. of protons = 11 (+ charge) ; No. of electrons = 11 (- charge)
Sodium ion: No. of protons = 11 (+ charge) ; No. of electrons = 10 (- charge)
So, Overall charge on sodium atom = 11 - 11 = 0
Overall charge on sodium ion = 11 - 10 = +1
Hence, sodium cation has a positive charge.
Ans15.

(i) Prevent water logging to avoid mosquito breeding.
(ii) Provision of safe drinking water.
(iii) Periodic cleaning of toilets.

(a) Edward Jenner
(b) Antibiotic is a chemical substance that kills pathogens. They are secreted by
microorganisms, like fungi and bacteria.
Example- Penicillin and streptomycin.
Ans18.
(a)
(i) Infectious diseases or communicable diseases
(ii) Congenital diseases
(iii) Acute diseases
(iv) Chronic diseases
(b) The process of injecting killed or attenuated microbes in order to activate the
immune system against disease causing microbes to prevent from diseases is
vaccination.
Ans19.
(a)
(i) Vectors: Organisms which carry disease causing organism from person to person
is called a vector. Pathogen completes some part of its life cycle in vector's body.
Example: Mosquito.
(ii) Carrier: Organisms which carry pathogens from one person to another.
Pathogens are not able to complete their life cycle in carriers. Example: Housefly
(b) Modes of transmission of AIDS are:
(i) Blood transfusion
(ii) Unprotected sexual contact.

(a) According to Archimedes' principle, when an object is wholly or partially immersed in a
liquid, it experiences a buoyant force which is equal to the weight of liquid displaced by
the object.
Two applications of Archimedes' principle are:
i.
ii.
It is used in determining the relative density of a substance.
It is used in designing ships and submarines.
(b) Volume of the iron block = 5 cm x 5 cm x 5 cm = 125 cc = 1.25 x 10 -4 m3
Mass of the iron block = volume x density = 125 cc x 7.8 g/cc
= 975g = 0.975 kg
Weight of the iron block = 0.975 kg x 10 m/s2 = 9.75 N
Upthrust = Weight of water displaced
= Volume of water displaced x density of water x g
= Volume of iron bock x density of water x g
= (1.25 x 10-4 m3) x (1000 kg/m3) x (10 m/s2)
= 1.25 N
Thus, apparent weight of iron block = 9.75 - 1.25 = 8.5 N
Or
(a) An echo is the phenomenon of repetition of sound of a source by reflection from an
obstacle.
If speed of sound is 344 m/s and persistence of sound is 1/10 second, then minimum
distance between the source of sound and obstacle should be at least 17.2 m so as to hear a
distinct echo.
In a small hall, the distance between the obstacle and the source of sound is less than 17.2
m. Thus, we are not able to hear the echo.

(a) Notochord is the chordate character which has evolved as vertebral column in
higher vertebrates.
(b) The notochord is a long rod – like support structure that runs along the back of the
animals, separating the nervous tissue from the gut. It provides a place for muscles
to attach for the ease of movement.
(c) In diploblastic organisms, only two germ layers are present, endoderm and
ectoderm. In them mesoderm is absent. So they do not have coelom.
(i) Body is unsegmented and is covered by calcareous spines.
Sexes are separate.
Or
(a) Characteristics possessed by chordates.
i. They have notochord which is replaced by vertebral column in adults.
ii. They have a dorsal nerve cord.
iii. They are triploblastic.
(b) The fungi and bacteria lack chlorophyll and are heterotrophic still they are
considered as plants because of the presence of cell wall and absence of centrioles.
They absorb the food in the solution form.
(c) The notochord is a long rod – like support structure that runs along the back of the
animals, separating the nervous tissue from the gut. It provides a place for muscles
to attach for the ease of movement.

Ans28. Correct option: D
Water drops left out will show more weight.
Ans29. Correct option: B
Larger the density, larger is the mass. Larger the mass, larger is the force. Pressure is
directly proportional to force applied. So iron cuboid is most effective because its density is
the largest.
Ans30. Correct option: B
The solid should be attached to the spring balance with the help of a thread. It should be
fully immersed in water without touching the base or side walls.
Ans31. Correct option: A
Backward and forward movement along the length produces longitudinal wave.
Ans32. Correct option: A
Denser the liquid; more is the upthrust and apparent loss in weight will be more.
Ans33. Correct option: C
According to the 'Law of conservation of mass', mass is neither created nor destroyed in a
chemical reaction.
Ans34. Correct option: A
