Association of Collegiate Business Schools and Programs ACBSP UPDATE, Spring 2004 page 2 President’s Message Barbara Van Syckle What city ranks third in the country behind New York City and Santa Fe as one of the top three art destinations in this country? Scottsdale, Arizona, the site of ACBSP’s 15th national conference, has over 125 art galleries, studios, and museums. Arrive in time to start your experience with the Thursday night ArtWalk, the longestrunning event of its kind in our nation. The entire city is a living museum as well, with creative redesigns of their bus shelters, fountains, highway walls and fences. Visit the Heard Museum North, which showcases one of the most outstanding collections of Native American art. Put Taliesin West on your list, Frank Lloyd Wright’s winter camp, which is now a historic landmark, architectural school and world headquarters of his Foundation. One of Wright’s students, Paolo Soleri, created a prototype city of sustainable urban ecosystems at Arcosanti, which is about an hour north of Scottsdale. Take the children to Rawhide Wild West Town, where you’ll step back to the 1880s in Arizona’s largest Western theme attraction. Many action-filled desert events through Apache River Canyon backcountry and the Sonoran Desert include hot-air ballooning, rafting, mountain biking, and canyoneering. Without leaving Scottsdale live out your dream of becoming a working cowboy at a real cattle ranch called Arizona Cowboy College. While there are numerous reasons to come to Scottsdale, the best time to arrive is June 2528 for the ACBSP 2004 Conference, Moving Teaching Excellence from Good to Great. You’ll want to have read the best-selling business books, Good to Great and Built to Last, in time to hear Jim Collins share what he and his team have learned about the characteristics of great organizations: their leadership, staffing, processes, choices, and cultures. This research has been the foundation for this year’s ACBSP leadership, and will benefit anyone charged bringing meaningful change to an organization focused on continuous quality performance. From first-hand experience I can share that he is an ever-curious student and a masterful teacher. In addition to world-class keynote speakers, we will roll out ACBSP Communities, networking dinners, PeopleSoft on Campus, and the international lounge. You will save time and money with the banquet scheduled for Sunday and your return flight home on Monday afternoon after the morning Presidents’ Panel debates contemporary issues. We trust that you are now active users of the digital ACBSP Membership Directory and are one of the 3900 weekly recipients of Business Education Week (BEW). Additional member benefits you will soon notice are increased international opportunities for your students and faculty as well as strategic alliances with business and industry. This strategic positioning will ensure ACBSP’s viability and longevity in the world of business education. The latest benefit to arrive was a one-page news bulletin about news-breaking developments for the 2004 Desert Ridge Conference which will accompany BEW every other week. Association of Collegiate Business Schools and Programs ACBSP UPDATE, Spring 2004 page 3 President’s Message (continued) None of this could have been accomplished without our recent hires. I have received tremendous support from our fully-staffed home office. Special thanks go to: • Doug Viehland, Executive Director • Steve Parscale, Director of Accreditation • Ron DeYoung, Associate Director Baccalaureate/Graduate Degree Commission • Jim Vomhof, Associate Director Associate Degree Commission • Diana Hallerud, Accreditation Coordinator/Meeting Coordinator • Mary Riley, Office and Data Coordinator • Tami Heitland, part-time staff focusing on membership and regional services • Shannon Evans, part-time staff focusing on conference and accreditation support It continues to be a fast-paced year filled with new challenges, meaningful relationships, and rewarding opportunities to serve. I look forward to seeing each and every one of you in Scottsdale: 12 weeks and counting! Warm regards, Barbara Van Syckle President, ACBSP Board of Directors Association of Collegiate Business Schools and Programs ACBSP UPDATE, Spring 2004 page 4 Report from Executive Director Douglas Viehland By now the readers of ACBSP Update should have on their computer their personal copy of Directory of Business Schools and Programs issued in January. We provided our first update of the Directory in March. This digital publication replaces the previous printed membership directory. This Directory remains a membership directory. When ACBSP expanded our target audience for delivery of member benefits from only two persons per campus to all those involved in delivery of business education, it became impractical to print and mail the directory to each person. The number of directories being distributed using the digital method is nearly 3,700 versus the previous print directory circulation of 800 copies. The directory would have doubled in size as well. Our costs to print and mail would have required an unwelcome dues increase. • • • • • Not only was this move essential, but it has other values as well. They include: Easy to Find Your Directory. Because the Directory is stored on the hard drive of your computer, you have immediate access to it. You do not need to find it on the bookshelf. It goes with you on a business trip or home if used on your laptop. The icon to connect to your Directory is always present on your desktop screen. Easy to Find Your Information. Unlike the print directory, the digital directory is searchable. Find an individual using their last name only. Find all two-year schools in the state of Georgia with ACBSP accreditation. The larger directory becomes your customized directory with your individual search features. Your Personalized Directory. Each individual record has a notepad for information on any individual or school and retains it for future reference. Look for the notepad icon. New Ways of Contacting. Look for the spider web icon to instantly go to a Web site. When an e-mail is available (published only for the CHAMPION), click on the envelope icon and a blank message is prepared for you. Try this with your print directory! Updated. The moment a directory is published it is out of date! Someone leaves and someone joins. An area code changes or an office is relocated. A misspelling is made or a phone number is not entered correctly. With the print directory there was no opportunity to correct for one year. The first update of the Directory was issued in March. The Member Information section includes Directory Correction information. I conclude by acknowledging that some individuals or organizations will want a printed directory for their own reasons. To place an order for your print directory, please send a request to directory@acbsp.org. The cost is $40 for the first copy and $20 for each additional copy. There is one more reason to contact directory@acbsp.org. How can we improve the Directory so ACBSP continues to become “better than ever”? We look forward to your comments. Association of Collegiate Business Schools and Programs ACBSP UPDATE, Spring 2004 page 5 News From the Director of Accreditation Steve Parscale I have had the opportunity to work with many varied and diverse institutions in the past two months. I attended the Region Seven meeting. They put together an excellent meeting. Northwest Nazarene University brought in Herb Cohen, author of Negotiate This! By Caring, But Not T-H-A-T Much. Mr. Cohen provided a fabulous, dynamic, and applicable presentation. I spent several days with the Council for Higher Education Accreditation (CHEA) at their annual conference. That was a great learning experience, and I will be sharing some of the information I learned with our members at the annual conference in June. I have been reviewing self studies and was on a reaffirmation site visit team, an initial accreditation site visit team, and two preliminary site visit teams. We have excellent people and excellent teams in the field providing outstanding service to our members. These teams are working hard to help take educational members from “Good to Great.” It is exciting to be a part of ACBSP, making a difference in the classroom through teaching excellence. June is rapidly approaching, as is our annual conference in Phoenix. I hope you are making plans to attend at the beautiful JW Marriott Resort and Spa June 25-28, 2004. Registration begins on Thursday, June 24, and the golf tournament starts early Friday morning. Many of us will be in numerous meetings scheduled throughout the day for the Boards, Commissioners, regions, and the annual business meetings. Saturday is packed with exciting educational sessions and keynote speakers. I cannot wait to hear Jim Collins talk about his book, Good To Great. Sunday is our big day for accreditation workshops. We have an exciting lineup of expert presenters ready to share their knowledge with you and answer your questions. Sunday night will end with a bang at the Reception/Accreditation Banquet where we will recognize the hard work of hundreds of people that conducted self-studies and prepared for site visits. Winding down to Monday, we can finalize the conference activities and take back newfound knowledge to apply to our own institutions in our quest for continuous process improvement. I end my column with some information on data collection and analysis and comparison to other institutions. We are in the planning phase of adding a benchmark site to the ACBSP Web page. The site could provide many institutions with valuable comparison data and information. There is currently a lot of good data at our disposal on the Internet. I have copied a couple of Web sites here that you can open and query for comparison data and information. The first Web site will take you to a research study conducted by Cliff Adelman from the US Department of Education on longitudinal data sets, which relates to participation/access, persistence/retention, degree attainment, transfer, transfer and degree attainment, grades and time to degree—among other indicators. He covers the time period 1972-2000. The URL is: www.ed.gov/rschstat/research/pubs/prinindicat/prinindicat.pdf. The other site has research on post-secondary education. It is http://nces.ed.gov/surveys/SurveyGroups.asp?Group=2. I hope some of this can help you select and evaluate key processes that are meaningful to you. Please call 913-339-9356 or e-mail (sparscale@acbsp.org) with any questions or comments. Association of Collegiate Business Schools and Programs ACBSP UPDATE, Spring 2004 page 6 ACBSP News Jackie Dokken Departs A familiar voice on the phone since the beginning of ACBSP is missing. Jackie’s last day was January 30. The office staff and a number of persons aware of her pending departure joined together to wish her the best during the time between the announcement of her departure and her last day. We take a moment here, on these pages, to thank her and acknowledge her dedication and support of ACBSP as a member of our family for nearly fourteen years.
