A short history - 1989 - 1994
• Before WWW (World Wide Web) was
available to us, we stored
(“published”) the Grand Rounds
presentations on the Internet using
a GOPHER server.
• To publish a presentation, it was
necessary to prepare the text by
converting the presentation’s
“fancy text” to “plain text” (ASCII
only). No graphics were permitted.
GOPHER
( go’ – fer ) • FTP (File Transfer Protocol) was
then used to place the text file on
Gopher Server.

to display text files
on the “Web”
87
In 1995 - there were only "HTML" files
88
This is an example of an HTML file on WWW
89
What is HTML?
• HTML = HyperText Markup
Language
• HTML is an ASCII-based
coding language that is used
to format text for the World
Wide Web (WWW) on the
Internet

When the residents began using the
computer to make their
SLIDE Presentations . . .
we began putting the
slide presentations on the Web,
along with the HTML text files.
At first, slides were TEXT-ONLY -no pictures...
93
Example of "TEXT ONLY" slide
94
"Text only" slides contained no “images"
