Canadian Red Cross Society Southern Saskatchewan Annual Review HUMANITARIAN VALUES We protect lives and ensure respect for the human being. Guided by the Movement’s Fundamental Principles, the Canadian Red Cross aims to alleviate human suffering and provide help to whomever needs it, wherever they are, whatever their race, political beliefs, religion, social status or culture may be. • The Canadian Red Cross, Saskatchewan Centennial 2005, and SaskEnergy partnered together to invite organizations and communities to celebrate the Centennial Peace Project in Saskatchewan by allowing young people to share their views on how to create a culture of peace, caring and respect in their communities. • 101 Peace Poles were planted in communities throughout Saskatchewan. • More than 2,500 children, high school students and adults attended Red Cross “Hear the Children” Peace Day events in Regina, Moose Jaw and Saskatoon. • More than 1,800 works of art or words of peace were submitted to the Red Cross Designs on Peace art contest from which 100 winners were selected and their art displayed in Yorkton, Moose Jaw, Prince Albert and Regina. “There are things you can do to help towards world peace, by starting at home, at school and in your community. You can help the less fortunate by volunteering here in Regina or sending money to poor countries around the world. Being kind to your neighbours, to your friends and to your family are other ways of showing peace here at home.” - Landon Grubb, Grade 8 Student, Grant Road School, Regina, Saskatchewan Moose Jaw youth participate in “Hear the Children” Peace Day. Canadian Red Cross Society Southern Saskatchewan Annual Review DISASTER & CONFLICT We provide relief when individuals and communities require support. “Professionalism and a calm collective voice in the eye of the storm is something they have learned and mastered after more than one hundred years of being one of the world’s leading humanitarian agencies. If disaster strikes in Southern Saskatchewan tomorrow, it‘s reassuring to know that your local Red Cross will be there to ensure that you know where your loved ones are and that your most immediate needs are met.” – Trish Bezborokto, Red Cross Volunteer, Southern Saskatchewan. • Saskatchewan volunteers and staff were sent to Southern Alberta and Manitoba to assist with flood relief and recovery during the summer of 2005. • Tornadoes and flooding in Southern Saskatchewan prompted Red Cross to open a reception centre in Melville for families evacuated due to flooding and provide basic needs to families in Leader and Neville who sustained tornado damage. • Volunteers assisted 63 families who experienced small disasters, primarily house fires. 125 adults and 48 children received help. • Red Cross has accepted responsibility for Lodging Services during a major disaster in Regina. A volunteer Emergency Lodging Planning Committee has created a manual as a guideline to local resources. Alternate Chiefs of Lodging are recruited and Shelter Managers have been trained. “I’ve heard people affected by fires say that they are embarrassed about asking for our help, but that they don’t have any options. I tell them that no one should have to ask for basic needs, that Red Cross will provide them with food, shelter and clothing because it is their basic human right. When it is put in those terms, their spirits are higher, their dignity is preserved and their resilience continues them farther.” – Red Cross Disaster Services Volunteer • The Regina office opened a Call Centre to take the overload of calls off our 1-800 donation line in Western Canada as a result of the Hurricane Katrina response. • Eight volunteers from Southern Saskatchewan assisted the American Red Cross after Hurricanes Katrina & Rita hit the Gulf Coast of the United States. Canadian Red Cross Society Southern Saskatchewan Annual Review HEALTH & INJURY PREVENTION We reduce suffering, save lives and build safe and healthy communities for individuals at vulnerable times in their lives. “This has been an incredible learning experience for these children and not an opportunity they would have gotten otherwise. Some of these kids have never been swimming in an indoor pool and for those that may have been afraid, being able to go with their friends was really helpful.” -Melanie LePlante, Aboriginal Head Start Instructor. • 74 Aboriginal children in Regina learned to swim thanks to a partnership between Red Cross, Aboriginal Family Services: Come and Learn Head Start Program and the City of Regina • Canadian Heritage funded four Childsafe courses, Standard First Aid and CPR for 40 participants and 10 babysitting courses for urban aboriginal participants. • The Aboriginal Head Start Swimming Program received a Canadian Red Cross Humanitarian Service Award. • In 2005 Red Cross launched the revised Water Safety program, Red Cross Swim. • 27 Fall Prevention presentations were provided by volunteers, part time staff and the project coordinator reaching 600 older adults. “It is not good enough for our school divisions to say our schools have a bullying policy in place, and expect that to solve the current problems or prevent future occurrences. I’m glad to see we finally reached the point where bullying issues are regarded as a community issue and the entire community, with the school, can and should work together”. - Kelvin Shewchuk, Grade 7/8 Teacher, Clive Draycott School, Bethune, Saskatchewan Regina Aboriginal Headstart student learns to swim.
