Students learn the basics of the language of film and develop basic storytelling skills. Educational Objectives: ●

Identify and define the processes, techniques, and applications used in creating media work Analyze, interpret ideas, issues and/or experiences presented in media texts Create media artwork that demonstrates an understanding and command of the principles of artistic design Compare and contrast movies with other arts disciplines, other content areas, and the world. Demonstrate a knowledge of digital citizenship and a sense of responsibility in the media arts Program Description: Reading Movies presents film screenings, post film discussions and critical thinking/writing exercises that enrich students’ study of literature, social studies, science, world languages, and the visual and performing arts. This program also provides students with a basic understanding of the languages of film: Camera, Editing, Sound & Mise en Scene (Setting, Character, Wardrobe, Lighting, etc). Teachers are welcome to choose from one of two titles from the current grade appropriated film list . Education faculty as well as guest speakers provide a social, historical, cultural, and aesthetic context for the film and facilitate post­screening discussion. After post­screen discussion, students break into groups to collaborate, write and present a new ending for the film. Instructor: ​

Also additional education faculty, HHMEC volunteer staff, and special guests Participation: These two titles were chosen by HHMEC faculty members and education advisors to provide excellent visual examples of basic filmmaking techniques that will meet the needs of your class based on content. The duration of the program varies according to the film chosen, but generally is between two and three hours. Teachers are strongly encouraged to view films before visiting the theatre to assure the film selection is appropriate for their class. The Red Balloon​

(2012) Directed by Sam French Narrative 9th Grade & Up Screenings are held at the Nickelodeon Theatre. Reservations are made on a first­come, first­served basis. Cost: $10 per student . Cost includes free small popcorn and drink for all students. Special rates are available for groups with a high percentage of students that receive free or reduced lunch. There is no charge for teachers and chaperones. Min 30 / Max 60 Students. If the group is less than 30 students, a flat fee of $300 will apply. All student screenings require a 3 week processing period.
