October 17, 2013 - October 23, 2013 7 OUT ‘N ABOUT - THE DAILY HERALD William McDowell To heat up the stage at gospel concert When musician and producer Adrian Scott got a vision to hold a gospel concert in St. Maarten; the first person who came to mind was renowned international gospel singer, Pastor William McDowell. He originally brushed off the idea of bringing McDowell because he felt it would be too costly to bring someone of this stature to the island. A friend, however, encouraged Scott to pursue his vision and he decided to give it a shot. Scott, who runs his own music studio, started making arrangements for the concert. He originally thought McDowell would have been difficult to pin down; but this was not so. He made contact with McDowell’s agents via email in August, enquiring whether the artiste would be willing and available to headline a concert here in St. Maarten for Saturday, November 2. After a few days, he received a positive response indicating that McDowell would be happy to perform in St. Maarten and that the date was perfect. Although McDowell did pass through the island once before on a connecting flight, this will be his first concert in St. Maarten and his first overnight stay here. McDowell is expected to be in St. Maarten on Friday, November 1, for the concert the following evening, Saturday, November 2. Scott’s reason for holding the concert is three-fold: 1) to raise funds to support Keoma Hamer and her cervical cancer awareness group Kelaha Projects Foundation; 2) to give exposure to the local artistes he works with and to his recording label production company and 3) to give the people of St. Maarten and the neighbouring islands an evening of blessed en- tertainment and worship. The writer-directors, Olivier Nakache and Eric Toledano, are cheerfully willing to go for broad gags, and their style is ingratiating. But at the end, by looking through the foreground details, what we’re being given is a simplistic reduction of racial stereotypes. “The Intouchables” is more of a soothing fantasy. in his career. Football Club (FC) Soualiga, a women’s soccer team established under St. Maarten Soccer Educational Foundation (SMSEF) in April, will be hosting these games. Coached by David Forsythe who has over 30 years of experience coaching soccer teams of all ages, the team has been growing steadily in number, enthusiasm and skill. FC Soualiga’s main goal is to encourage fun and energetic women to participate in the sport of soccer, thereby living a healthy and active lifestyle, as well as contributing to the community whenever and wherever they can. The setting up of an International Women’s Soccer Tournament is deemed to further stimulate the sport of soccer locally, to get acquainted with other women’s soccer teams in the region and to stimulate the important role of women in sports. To give you some incentive for building your cardboard craft for this year’s bathtub derby, here is a little story about a winning team from last year. Team LU’s aim is winning! The Learning Unlimited team was headed by physical instructor Dimitri Beauperthuy, affectionately known as Mr. B. Building team members Jessie, Ishmael, Mac and Norman created the boat, working diligently on getting it finished before the launch date. They had one goal and that was building a craft which would carry them quicker and further than all the others. When they arrived at the starting point on the day of the race, people laughed at their creation, convinced that this particular creation would have no chance in the competition. Seeing that all the other teams had really gone out of their way to make their boats look attractive, funny and possibly more effective in the water, the LU team was definitely worried. Nevertheless, boat LU, yes, they kept the name simple, proved to all that the looks of a boat are not important when it comes to staying afloat. Team LU won first place in the “KID’s” class race. Mr. B’s lovely sailors on the boat were Celine, Pretty, Simran and Mr. B. They had a great time and are definitely entering an LU team once again this year, hoping to be as successful as they were last year. And it goes without saying that the looks of the boat will have improved! Sink or win in your cardboard craft! Here’s to trying to stay above water This will be a sink or win for participants in their cardboard craft during the 2nd Annual Bathtub Derby set for November 10 at Kimsha Beach. 4. Daring boaters will take to the water in the hopes of accomplishing the seemingly impossible – staying afloat in boats made entirely from cardboard. Competitors of all ages will race to the last wind only to prove their homemade craft with an ambitious racing strategy will be their competitors’ worst nightmare. While some teams will choose to focus on appearance, there are others who feel a need for speed, opting for faster canoe-style designs. Amazingly, there is always a boat that seems to defy the laws of science by somehow staying afloat until the finishing line. It is important to follow rules; here are the safety rules for Bathtub Derby 2013. 10. 1. The passenger area of the boat must not be permanently enclosed above the shoulders of the occupants. Each occupant must be visible while the boat is in the water. 2. Boats must be free of sharp edges or anything that could pose a danger. 3. All participants must wear a personal flota- tion device before entering the boat, and while the boat is in the water. Floatation device will be available on the day of the event for rent. If your boat sinks, you are disqualified from the race and should exit the water as soon as possible. Participant may not menace another participant. Poor sportsmanship will result in disqualification. Sunken or discarded vessels must be disposed of by the outpost crew at the conclusion of the race. Each vessel must carry a closed one-gallon plastic jug with a 15-inch (4.5 metres) rope firmly attached to the vessel for use in locating and retrieving any sunken remains. No loose items, especially items that may sink, may be carried during competition. Throwing water on another boat is reason for disqualification, unless said water comes by accident from the splash of the paddle. You need his approval with everything you do in your life, from household cleaning products to the colour of your toenails. He’s become your hobby. Knowing that you’re clingy is the first step to improving your behaviour. If you’re clingy, then you’re the kind of person who gets obsessed with a new person the moment you meet, whether you’re making friends or dating. After that, you’re likely to call the person constantly, ask to hang out all the time, and feel sad or abandoned if you have to spend some time alone. If you’ve exhibited some of this behaviour, or if the people in your life have asked you to give them space, then you need to work on improving yourself and your approach to relationships so you can be less clingy. Build your confidence. A lot of people are clingy because they are unhappy with who they are and feel insecure about being alone, being left behind, or being ignored. Clingy people can even become overly paranoid that people are hanging out without them because they think that nobody may really like them in the end. Get over these feelings and work on loving who you are. If you’re confident, then you won’t be obsessed with people leaving you and will be less clingy. Work on your trust issues. Many people are clingy because they have trust issues, whether they stem from feeling abandoned as a child, being ditched by a former best friend, or even being cheated on by a former significant other. These causes may have been very painful, but you need to learn that you should approach each new relationship on its own terms, and that the past cannot dictate the present. Ease your anxiety. If your life is filled with exciting and rewarding activities, you’ll be much less likely to be clingy. Learn to like being alone. By Lucinda Frye To say we have found a fabulous establishment at which to dine is definitely putting it mildly. L’Estaminet offers the most divinely, exquisite menu. It rates the highest I can score out of all the many restaurants I have been to in many a long year. Not because of the building, which is quaint and typical of a Grand Case cottage, not because it is easy to find, nor is it because of the intimate (if rather closely adjacent) tables, but because of the service, the ambiance and the food. The chef’s creativity is matchless, wonderfully imaginative and delightfully presented. L’Estaminet has been on my bucket list for dining out for quite some time and I finally made it with a dear friend who enjoyed the finer points of the evening with as much relish as I did. Although the tables are rather closely set, they are at such an angle that one is not too intrusive on the next table. The tablecloths are gleaming white and replaced at the end of every meal, I noticed, so the table is readied for the next diners. Glasses and flatware were simple and gleaming with new flatware being brought for each course – a perfect touch. The menu is not overwhelmingly large, it offers up to about six varieties in each section of hot and cold appetizers, meat, fish, risottos and desserts. There is also a special daily menu. Before we were told of the daily menu, we spied something being taken to another table that intrigued us enough for us to decide we wanted to share the dish; it had come from the special menu. Every delicious course has a little whimsy to the plating; the taste and the overall appearance are quite astonishing, nothing too over the top but certainly quite impressionable. The dressing was a sweet and spicy ginger dressing prepared in a special way of which I will not divulge here, dear readers, you will have to enjoy an evening at L’Estaminet to try this. Our next course was one of hot soup. We had ordered lobster bisque, which came with just half of one side of the surface flaming; coconut and rum I believe were used. Resting across the bowl was a long handled spoon with some exquisite lobster meat in the bowl. It was explained to us that this should be stirred into the elixir. This lobster soup in its rich creaminess was very filling and yet there wasn’t enough; we both wanted more and knew that we would have to return to enjoy it once again. The second soup we ordered was a green asparagus soup. This was served with a wee side of camembert ice cream and a bacon crème brulee. What a combination! The soup on its own was smooth and tasty, but taking a little of all three flavours at once set our taste buds exploding. This soup was light and delicious.
