Robyn “Rihanna” Fente was born on February 20, 1988, in Saint Michael, Barbados. Known to most as a recording artist,
Rihanna is also an actress and a fashion

The demos were sent to several record labels and she subsequently signed a contract with Def Jam, the president of which
is rapper Jay-Z. Her breakthrough started
with her second studio album “Music of
the Sun” in 2005, Girl like me” peaked in
the top 10 on the Billboards 200 chart.
Her lead single “Umbrella” came from her
third studio album, which
skyrocketed to the top of
the charts, and the rest is
history. Rihanna has been
nominated for nine Grammy
Awards, winning the best

William McDowell
To heat up the stage at gospel concert
When musician and producer Adrian Scott got a
vision to hold a gospel
concert in St. Maarten;
the first person who came
to mind was renowned
international
gospel
singer, Pastor William
McDowell. He originally brushed off the idea of
bringing McDowell because he felt it would be
too costly to bring someone of this stature to the
island. A friend, however,
encouraged Scott to pursue his vision and he decided to give it a shot.
Scott, who runs his own
music studio, started
making arrangements for
the concert. He originally
thought McDowell would
have been difficult to pin
down; but this was not so.
He made contact with McDowell’s agents via email
in August, enquiring
whether the artiste would
be willing and available to
headline a concert here in
St. Maarten for Saturday,
November 2. After a few
days, he received a positive response indicating
that McDowell would be
happy to perform in St.
Maarten and that the date
was perfect.
Although McDowell did
pass through the island
once before on a connecting flight, this will
be his first concert in St.
Maarten and his first overnight stay here. McDowell is expected to be in St.
Maarten on Friday, November 1, for the concert
the following evening, Saturday, November 2.
Scott’s reason for holding
the concert is three-fold:
1) to raise funds to support Keoma Hamer and
her cervical cancer awareness group Kelaha Projects
Foundation; 2) to give exposure to the local artistes

company and 3) to give the
people of St. Maarten and

who was also a backup singer for Youth Wave; Marc G.

As a musician and producer,
Scott has worked with many local artistes, producing
albums for Dion Gumbs,

Cine Club St. Maarten
will show the movie
“The Intouchables” at
Philipsburg Jubilee Library on Monday, October 21. The movie starts
at 7:30pm and tickets
will be sold when the bar
opens at 7:00pm. French
spoken with English subtitles, the movie is 1 hour
52 minutes long with a
10-minute intermission.
An irreverent, uplifting
comedy about friendship,
trust and human possibility, The Intouchables has
broken box office records
in its native France and
across Europe. Based on
a true story of friendship
between a handicap millionaire (Francois Cluzet)
and his street smart excon caretaker (Omar Sy),
The Intouchables depicts an unlikely camaraderie rooted in honesty and humour between
two individuals who, on
the surface, would seem
to have nothing in common. It might help to
think of “The Intouchables” as a French spinoff
of “Driving Miss Daisy,”
retitled “Pushing Monsieur Philippe.” A stuffy
rich employer finds his life
enriched by a wise black
man from the Paris ghettos and takes lessons in
funky music and the joys
of marijuana. This is a story that has been told time
and again in the movies,

as the simple ability to walk
across a room. A caregiver
can’t provide that, but he
can provide something more
valuable, companionship.
Philippe’s wife is dead, his
teenage daughter is a snotty brat, and his staff workers
are preoccupied by their salaries and status. Driss comes
from a different world.
The movie tells the story of a
growing relationship between
these two likable men, based
on Driss’ confidence that
Philippe will improve if he
escapes his stuck-up lifestyle
and samples the greater freedoms of an immigrant from
Africa. There may be a certain truth in this, but the education of Philippe proceeds in
a series of essentially insulting clichés. Driss, you see, has
rhythm and soul, and if only Philippe can absorb some
of that, he’ll be a happier
man. He’ll still be a French
millionaire surrounded by a
protective staff, he’ll still be
paralyzed, but he’ll be happier. How many times have

The appeal of a film like this,
and it is perfectly legitimate,
is that when we begin to feel
affection for the characters, what makes them happy makes us happy. Caught
up in the flow of events, we
allow many assumptions
to pass unchallenged. The
writer-directors,
Olivier

The first ever International Women’s Soccer Tournament takes place
at Johan Cruyff Court in Belvedere this coming weekend, Saturday,
October 19, 10:00am-4:00pm and Sunday, October 20, 10:00am1:00pm. Football Club (FC) Soualiga, a women’s soccer team established under St. Maarten Soccer Educational Foundation (SMSEF)
in April, will be hosting these games.
Coached by David Forsythe who has over 30 years of experience coaching soccer teams of all ages, the team has been growing steadily in number, enthusiasm and skill. FC Soualiga’s main goal is to encourage fun
and energetic women to participate in the sport of soccer, thereby living
a healthy and active lifestyle, as well as contributing to the community
whenever and wherever they can.
The setting up of an International Women’s Soccer Tournament is deemed to
further stimulate the sport of soccer locally, to get acquainted with other women’s soccer teams in the region and to stimulate the important role of women in
sports. Five teams from throughout the Caribbean region have confirmed their participation, thereby establishing a great sports tourism opportunity for Sint Maarten
and its establishments.
FC Soualiga and its tournament has gained the support from many local businesses and entities, providing the visiting teams with accommodation, local travel, dining and shopping opportunities as well as many more fun activities to be enjoyed during their stay on the Friendly Island. FC Soualiga hereby invites the public to come out and support the team and enjoy the sports
entertainment during this tournament.
SMSEF and FC Soualiga would like to thank everyone who has thus far contributed to and supported the International Women’s Soccer Tournament. Both organizations look forward to continued enthusiasm and support for
women’s soccer on Sint Maarten and in the region. Special thanks go out to Princess Juliana International Airport; the Ministry of Tourism, Economic Affairs, Transport and Telecommunications; Divi Little Bay Resort;
Belair Beach Hotel; Oyster Bay Beach Resort; Looking Good; Sports Gallery; Vanity First; Ballerina Jewelers; Cost-U-Less and Heavenly Water. Without the amazing support from the contributing sponsors, an
event like this would not have been possible.
For those interested in joining the team, FC Soualiga soccer practice takes place every Tuesday and Thursday at Hillside Christian School Asha Stevens Campus in Cay
Hill from 6:00pm. Contact info: fcsoualiga@gmail.com; facebook page: FC Soualiga; or come visit during practice!

Team LU – Winners in their class
Can they do it again this year?
To give you some incentive
for building your cardboard
craft for this year’s bathtub
derby, here is a little story
about a winning team from
last year.
Team LU’s aim is winning!
The Learning Unlimited team
was headed by physical instructor Dimitri Beauperthuy,
affectionately known as Mr.
B. Building team members Jessie, Ishmael, Mac and Norman
created the boat, working diligently on getting it finished before the launch date. They had
one goal and that was building
a craft which would carry them
quicker and further than all the
others.
When they arrived at the starting point on the day of the race,
people laughed at their creation, convinced that
this particular creation would have no
chance in the competition. Seeing that all
the other teams had
really gone out of their
way to make their
boats look attractive, funny and
possibly more effective in the water, the LU team was definitely
worried. Nevertheless, boat LU,
yes, they kept the name simple,
proved to all that the looks of a
boat are not important when it
comes to staying afloat.
Team LU won first place in the
“KID’s” class race. Mr. B’s lovely
sailors on the boat were Celine,
Pretty, Simran and Mr. B. They
had a great time and are definitely entering an LU team once
again this year, hoping to be as
successful as they were last year.
And it goes without saying that
the looks of the boat will have
improved!
Sink or win in your
cardboard craft!
Here’s to trying to stay above water
This will be a sink or win for participants in their cardboard craft
during the 2nd Annual Bathtub
Derby set for November 10 at Kimsha Beach.
4.
Daring boaters will take to the water in the hopes of accomplishing
the seemingly impossible – staying
afloat in boats made entirely from
cardboard.
Competitors of all ages will race
to the last wind only to prove their
homemade craft with an ambitious
racing strategy will be their competitors’ worst nightmare.
While some teams will choose to focus on appearance, there are others
who feel a need for speed, opting for
faster canoe-style designs.
Amazingly, there is always a boat
that seems to defy the laws of science by somehow staying afloat until the finishing line.
At the end of it all, the curiosity remains on who will dramatically embrace the “Titanic Award.”
5.
6.
7.
8.
9.
It is important to follow rules; here
are the safety rules for Bathtub Derby 2013.
10.
1. The passenger area of the boat
must not be permanently enclosed above the shoulders of
the occupants. Each occupant must be visible
while the boat is in the
water.
2. Boats must be free of
sharp edges or anything
that could pose a danger.
3. All participants must
wear a personal flota-
tion device before entering the
boat, and while the boat is in
the water. Floatation device will
be available on the day of the
event for rent.
If your boat sinks, you are disqualified from the race and
should exit the water as soon
as possible.
Participant may not menace another participant. Poor sportsmanship will result in disqualification.
Sunken or discarded vessels
must be disposed of by the outpost crew at the conclusion of
the race.
Each vessel must carry a closed
one-gallon plastic jug with a
15-inch (4.5 metres) rope firmly attached to the vessel for use
in locating and retrieving any
sunken remains.
No loose items, especially items
that may sink, may be carried
during competition.
Throwing water on another
boat is reason for disqualification, unless said water comes by
accident from the splash of the
paddle.
A legitimate dewatering device
(e.g. bucket) may be used to remove water from within a sinking vessel.

Clingy-clingy
Desperate for new-found love to last, a
naïve Paula Deanda sweetly sang in her
2006 chart-topper “Doing Too Much”:
“I’m leaving messages and voicemails
telling you ‘I miss you.’ Baby, am I doing
too much?”
We know this girl, have gossiped about this girl or
have been this girl at some point in our love lives.
As women, we sometimes desire to have a man so
badly that we try to rush the comfort that comes
with a naturally developing relationship. Unfortunately, that desire can be read as desperation and
make potential boyfriend material duck for cover.
It happens sometimes. We get insecure. Something
trips our radar and we can’t help but feel as though
our guy is pulling away from us. Problem is, the
more you push your guy to try to get closer, the farther he wants to be from you. Being an overbearing
girlfriend is not sexy, not even a little. It’s one of the
quickest ways to go from hot to not.
Here are some signs you might have a little bit of a
clingy problem

Every message on his Facebook wall from
the last three weeks is from you.
When he doesn’t text you back immediately,
you begin to call him, then his mother, then
his best friend.
You insist on reading his emails, texts, and
IM conversations.
You start cancelling on your crew. That funny
little feeling called infatuation will have you
believing that you should be spending every
waking minute under your brand new boo.
In fact, this is the best way to guarantee
you’ll be sick of him before you can change
your Facebook status. Make time to miss
each other by maintaining your separate social lives.
You have the urge and actually act on it to
search his house, his car, and his wallet for
signs that he may be unfaithful.
You demand that he not have any female
friends even on Facebook.
You expect that every waking moment be
spent together.
You crash guys’ night out.
You refer to his relatives as “in-laws” and try
to force yourself into the family.
Loving the crew a little too much. Friends
are a part of the package; it doesn’t mean
you’re obligated to make his BFFs your besties too just because you’re dating.

you take over all of his household chores,

take his laundry to the drycleaner, and make
him lunches for work – every day.
When he’s not at his desk, you call the front
office and demand that they page him. Just
because you want to talk.
You never see your friends because you’re
always with your guy.
The very idea of not seeing your guy for a
night makes you panic.
You’re talking about weddings and baby
names on date #3.
You need his approval with everything you
do in your life, from household cleaning
products to the colour of your toenails.
He’s become your hobby.
Knowing that you’re clingy is the first step to improving your behaviour. If you’re clingy, then you’re the
kind of person who gets obsessed with a new person the moment you meet, whether you’re making
friends or dating. After that, you’re likely to call the
person constantly, ask to hang out all the time, and
feel sad or abandoned if you have to spend some
time alone. If you’ve exhibited some of this behaviour, or if the people in your life have asked you to
give them space, then you need to work on improving yourself and your approach to relationships so
you can be less clingy.
Build your confidence. A lot of people are clingy
because they are unhappy with who they are and
feel insecure about being alone, being left behind,
or being ignored. Clingy people can even become
overly paranoid that people are hanging out without them because they think that nobody may really
like them in the end. Get over these feelings and
work on loving who you are. If you’re confident,
then you won’t be obsessed with people leaving
you and will be less clingy.
Work on your trust issues. Many people are clingy
because they have trust issues, whether they stem
from feeling abandoned as a child, being ditched
by a former best friend, or even being cheated on
by a former significant other. These causes may
have been very painful, but you need to learn that
you should approach each new relationship on
its own terms, and that the past cannot dictate the
present.
Ease your anxiety. A lot of clingy behaviour is
rooted in anxiety – you may be anxious about being alone forever, anxious about not having a best
friend, or anxious that people are laughing at you
behind your back the second you leave the room.
You may also just be anxious about trying to navigate multiple or new relationships, so to deal with
your fear of the unknown, you stick to the person or
By Roxanne
few people you know well.
Talk to someone. If you feel so clingy that you’re dependent on your mother’s boyfriends or best friend’s
every move, then you may need to talk to someone
about your problem. You can start by opening up to
a close friend, significant other, or family member
about your problems. If you feel out of control, you
can talk to a doctor or therapist and see if your problems are linked to an anxiety disorder or depression.
Pursue your own interests. The easiest way to stop being clingy is to lead a busy and exciting life that is full
of things to look forward to. If you don’t have a whole
lot going on for yourself, it’ll be much easier for you
to want to spend all of your time with your boyfriend
or best friend. If your life is filled with exciting and
rewarding activities, you’ll be much less likely to be
clingy.
Learn to like being alone. Many clingy people prefer
to spend 99% of their time with other people. Wanting to always hang out with other people will make it
particularly hard for you to be alone. Enjoying your
“me time” is an important way to build confidence, to
find what makes you happy, and just to decompress
and spend time away from other people!

- Old fashioned French word for
tavern serving modern French
cuisine!
By Lucinda Frye
To say we have found a fabulous establishment at which
to dine is definitely putting
it mildly. L’Estaminet offers
the most divinely, exquisite
menu. It rates the highest I
can score out of all the many restaurants I have been to
in many a long year. Not because of the building, which
is quaint and typical of a
Grand Case cottage, not because it is easy to find, nor
is it because of the intimate
(if rather closely adjacent)
tables, but because of the
service, the ambiance and
the food. The chef’s creativity is matchless, wonderfully
imaginative and delightfully
presented.
L’Estaminet has been on my
bucket list for dining out for
quite some time and I finally made it with a dear friend
who enjoyed the finer points
of the evening with as much
relish as I did.
Upon entering the restaurant,
we were greeted with a smile

and quickly seated, handed a
wine list and menu, and offered flat or sparkling water.
Although the tables are rather
closely set, they are at such
an angle that one is not too
intrusive on the next table.
The tablecloths are gleaming white and replaced at the
end of every meal, I noticed,
so the table is readied for the
next diners. Glasses and flatware were simple and gleaming with new flatware being
brought for each course – a
perfect touch.
The menu is not overwhelmingly large, it offers up to
about six varieties in each section of hot and cold appetizers,
meat, fish, risottos and desserts. There is also a special
daily menu. Before we were
told of the daily menu, we
spied something being taken
to another table that intrigued
us enough for us to decide
we wanted to share the dish;
it had come from the special
menu.
Every delicious course has a
little whimsy to the plating; the
taste and the overall appearance are quite astonishing,
nothing too over the top but
certainly quite impressionable.
The dressing was a sweet and
spicy ginger dressing prepared
in a special way of which I will
not divulge here, dear readers,
you will have to enjoy an evening at L’Estaminet to try this.
Our next course was one of
hot soup. We had ordered
lobster bisque, which came
with just half of one side of
the surface flaming; coconut
and rum I believe were used.
Resting across the bowl was a
long handled spoon with some
exquisite lobster meat in the
bowl. It was explained to us
that this should be stirred into
the elixir. This lobster soup in
its rich creaminess was very
filling and yet there wasn’t
enough; we both wanted
more and knew that we would
have to return to enjoy it once
again.
The second soup we ordered
was a green asparagus soup.
This was served with a wee
side of camembert ice cream
and a bacon crème brulee.
What a combination! The
soup on its own was smooth
and tasty, but taking a little of
all three flavours at once set
our taste buds exploding. This
soup was light and delicious.

served as Policy Advisor in St. Maarten Parliament
from 2010 to 2012. He is presently serving as Deputy
Secretary of St. Maarten Progress Committee, which
was established by Royal Decree.
You are the founder of AirStMaarten; please tell me
something about this.
In 2002, I founded the virtual airline called AirStMaarten,
which is solely an internet-based airline concept that is
used to fill gaps in the airline and aviation industry as it
concerns servicing certain destinations with flights and
charters that other airlines and charter companies are
not catering to. In 2003, AirStMaarten was instrumental in bringing charter flights into St. Maarten, Curaçao
and Aruba via Air Holland, which went bankrupt in 2004.
AirStMaarten has since been specializing in the high-end
shared charters market to St. Barths and the other surrounding islands of St. Maarten, such as Anguilla, Nevis,
Antigua and Tortola.
Where were you born?
I was born on the island of St. Kitts on May 23, 1967. My
family is originally from Anguilla and my mother was
born in Curaçao when my grandfather worked there at
the Shell oil refinery in 1950s. My family finally moved
and settled down in St. Maarten when I was three years

What do you do in your free time when not on the

When I am not working, I am always writing, surfing

forever brainstorming ideas for new businesses. It is

com and StMaartenFlowers.com – but more about
these e-commerce activities another time.
As I can’t turn off my brain and its perpetual desire
to explore the limits of my entrepreneurial creativity,
I like to travel as a means of literally “getting away.” I
love traveling with my family. Travel offers me the opportunity to not only explore new places, sites, scenes
and countries, but it also offers me the opportunity to
do some serious reading. I love reading; always have
– since I was a kid.
Every day I read about 10 newspapers (four offline and
six online); so when I go on vacation, I leave the newspapers behind and I read novels, how-to and business
books while flying and during my quiet time on the
ground.
If you could give one piece of advice to someone,
what would it be?
My advice to people is that they should take a vacation every six months. Not because I own a travel
agency and it is good for my business, but because it
is really good for the mind, body and soul to get away
from the hectic life one leads working every day from
nine to five. It is good to get away from your normal
surroundings and put yourself in new environments
and unfamiliar places. This helps enormously to expand and enrich your life with new experiences and
new energy. Whenever I come back from a vacation,
I am ready to go again and I always promise myself to
go again in another six weeks, but that usually never
happens. But still, that is always my goal: work hard
for six weeks and then take a vacation break again.
Fortunately, living the entrepreneurial life affords me
the opportunity to travel more often than most people and I always try to make the best of it.
If you could invite three people for dinner, who
would they be? Where would you take them for
dinner? And what would be the one question you
would ask them?
Three people I would like to invite to dinner are Rihanna, Richard Branson and King Willem Alexander.
I would invite them to have dinner with me in St.
Barths and my question would be if they would like to
return to St. Barths again and fly with AirStMaarten.
I would prepare the best flight possible for them from
St. Maarten to St. Barths (laughs). Sorry, I am a serial
entrepreneur. With me, it is all about business!!!
