Each President was chosen by citizens to represent the people of our country. 4 As Head of State, the President represents the American people to others throughout the world. He meets with dignitaries or representatives of foreign countries. 5 The President can share his duties as America’s representative by appointing ambassadors. These men and women also represent The United States in other countries. 6 The President is the leader of the United States’ government. As its leader, he has many duties to perform. 7 The President is responsible for fifteen (15) executive agencies. He appoints directors to run these departments. 8 Each agency helps the President to operate different parts of our government. 9 Another Presidential duty includes working with Congress. Congress is made up of Senators and Representatives from each of the 50 states. 10 Congress works to create new laws. The President can choose to either veto or approve the laws that United States’ citizens must follow. 11 Also, the President’s duties include choosing justices to serve on the Supreme Court. Supreme Court Justices make sure that all laws are understood and are fairly carried out. 12 Another duty of the President is to act as Commander-in-Chief. The President is the leader of the United States’ military forces. 13 The President can use the power of the military to enforce laws in our country and to serve as a military presence in foreign countries. 14 With all of his duties, the President of the United States may be considered one of the most important jobs in America. 15 Online Resources Thank you to the following on-line resources: Department of the Treasury Seal http://www.ustreas.gov/education/fact-sheets/history/treas-seal.shtml Seal of Secretary of State http://www.nationmaster.com/encyclopedia/United-States-Department-of-State Seal of Secretary of Defense http://www.nationmaster.com/encyclopedia/Image:United-States-Department-of-Defense-Seal.svg Seal of Secretary of Interior http://www.nationmaster.com/encyclopedia/United-States-Department-of-the-Interior Seal of Secretary of Agriculture http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Image:US-DeptOfAgriculture-Seal.png Seal of Secretary of Justice http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Image:US-DeptOfJustice-Seal.svg Seal of Secretary of Commerce http://www.nationmaster.com/encyclopedia/United-States-Department-of-Commerce 16 Online Resources Thank you to the following on-line resources: Seal of Department of Health and Human Services http://www.nationmaster.com/encyclopedia/United-States-Department-of-Health-and-Human-Services Seal of Housing and Urban Development http://www.nationmaster.com/encyclopedia/United-States-Department-of-Housing-and-Urban-Development Seal of Department of Labor http://www.civicheraldry.com/page/8952 Seal of Secretary of Transportation http://vector-images.com/image.php?epsid=4897 Seal of Department of Energy http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Image:US-DeptOfAgriculture-Seal.png Seal of Department of Education http://www.civicheraldry.com/page/8739 Seal of Department of Veteran Affairs http://www.nationmaster.com/encyclopedia/United-States-Department-of-Commerce 17 Online Resources Thank you to the following on-line resources: Department of Homeland Security Seal http://www.ustreas.gov/education/fact-sheets/history/treas-seal.shtml President Reagan with Pope John Paul II http://www.businessimagegroup.com/presidentialimages.com/Reagan.html Churchill, FDR and Stalin at Yalta http://media-2.web.britannica.com/eb-media/47/5247-004-F2F95600.jpg Ambassador and Mrs. Taubman with President Basescu of Romania http://bucharest.usembassy.gov/embassy/ambassador/photo_gallery.html President George W.
