Welcoming
Remarks
from the President
Hello! As President of Ewha Womans University, I sincerely welcome you to Ewha, one of Korea’s most prestigious
universities and the largest women’s university in the world. Ewha has offered superior education to women ever since
it was founded in May 1886 with a single student. Today, Ewha has become a truly international university, offering
an innovative environment for students to challenge themselves adventurously and rigorously, and for researchers and
professors to unfold in-depth studies across a multitude of disciplines. Thus, change begins at Ewha.
As a global university, Ewha has one of Korea’s most comprehensive and well regarded exchange networks, partnering
with more than 800 universities around the world. Students seeking 21st century skills and top quality education come
to Ewha to study in both degree-seeking and short-term programs. Our prominent faculty, composed of leading scholars
and researchers, challenges students to expand their horizons of knowledge and inquiry and achieve their greatest
potential.
Ewha’s Office of Global Affairs continues to play a central role in the university’s international mission, promoting
global perspectives among students, faculty and the community. I extend an invitation to all to join our international
community at Ewha as we move full speed ahead into a bright future!

1. EWHA GLOBAL EMPOWERMENT PROGRAM (EGEP)
3. Ewha Global Top 5 Project
Forging Transnational Bonds among Women NGO Workers
Growing Research Excellence
Ewha reaches out to bright young women around the world through
the Ewha Global Empowerment Program (EGEP), a short-term leader
education program launched in 2011 for talented women working in
nongovernmental public sectors in Asia and Africa. The two-week, fullyfunded program brings students to the campus, where they attend lectures,
symposia, and workshops, as
well as meet top women policy
makers and scholars in Korea. At
the culmination of the program,
students return to their home
countries, where they are able
to apply their newfound skills
and knowledge to enact positive
change.
2. EWHA GLOBAL PARTNERSHIP PROGRAM (EGPP)
Fostering Brilliant Minds
Ewha extends its education to bright young women around the world
through the Ewha Global Partnership Program (EGPP). Founded in 2006 and
growing every year, the program offers full scholarships to bright and highly
motivated women from developing countries for undergraduate or graduate
programs, with the aim to form them into 21 st century global leaders.
At present, the EGPP has given scholarships to 117 students from 27
countries, including Afghanistan,
Turkey, Nepal, Laos, Malaysia,
Mozambique and Kenya. These
talented women study at the
Ewha campus develop their
leadership potential, and later
contribute to their native
country’s growth.
In order to foster world-class research and empower women researchers in
the global arena, Ewha established the ‘Ewha Global Top 5 Project’ in 2011,
committing to invest KRW 10 billion (roughly 10 million USD) in research support
to bolster cutting-edge research in critical fields over the course of three years.
Selected fields include Biotechnology, IT, Design, International Studies, Women’s
Studies, Nanoscience, Business Administration, Korean Studies, Teacher Education,
Pharmacy, Interdisciplinary Education (Scranton College) and Multicultural Studies.
With this initiative Ewha is determined to produce cutting-edge research with an
international impact.
4. Ewha-Solvay Partnership
Becoming a RDT Powerhouse
In May 2011 Ewha partnered with global chemical company Solvay to base
the company’s Korean Research, Development and Technology (RDT) Center and
Global Business Unit Special Chemicals Headquarters on the Ewha campus. Solvay
will invest EUR 13 million in the RDT Center and EUR 3.8 million in a five-year
collaborative research fellowship in
close cooperation with Ewha’s Center
for Intelligent Nano-biomaterials,
Institute of Nano-biotechnology, and
New & Renewable Energy Research
Center. This joint agreement will
sharpen Ewha’s competitive edge in
international research and open up new
possibilities in its RDT capacity.
5. Educating Future Leaders on a Futuristic
Campus
The ECC Complex
The Ewha Campus Complex (ECC), designed by renowned architect Dominique
Perrault and opened in 2008, introduces a new concept in campus design. As the
largest underground campus in Korea, the building allows students to blend learning
and lifestyle, with state-of-the-art lecture halls, an ultra-modern fitness center,
an art cinema, a performance hall, bookstores, restaurants, cafes, and much more.
Designed to be eco-friendly, the ECC’s glass walls flood classrooms with natural
light, while rain and ground water are recycled through the building, increasing the
building’s energy efficiency. The rooftop features natural gardens with pedestrian
paths populated by azaleas, flowering trees and shrubs designed to look beautiful
during every season.
6. Empowering Economically Disadvantaged
Women
Together for a better future
Ewha has always been determined to provide education for economically
disadvantaged women. Launched in 2011, the “Ewha Future Leader Scholarship” is
the first scholarship offered by a Korean university that covers both tuition fees and
living costs for all four years of university study. Ewha Future Leader Scholarships
are given to students with high academic abilities and growth potential, but who
face adverse economic conditions.
To further combat inequality on a
macro-scale, plans are underway for
the establishment of a Social Capital
Research Center.

Extra-Curricular
Activities
As the old saying “백문불여일견” (baek-moon-bool-yeo-il-kyun, try it!)
goes, just hearing about something one hundred times can’t be
better than experiencing it firsthand. You can’t study in Korea
without delving into life here! Ewha is keen that its
international students should enjoy the best sites in the
country.
Changdeok Palace
Changdeok Palace is the only palace in Korea that preserves the architectural style
of the Joseon Dynasty, where 300-year-old trees and pavilions mingle harmoniously
throughout. Students may come and visit the palace renowned for its beauty and
history, and see for themselves what Korea once was.
International Mini-Olympics
In order to commemorate Ewha, there will be a festival on campus from mid- to late May.
Ewha’s international students participate in an International Mini-Olympics with the
categories of Soccer, Dodgeball, Dangerous Relay, 5-person/6-legged race, and Group Ropeskipping to celebrate Ewha’s anniversary and enjoy the beautiful spring weather in Korea.
Nanta
Also a Korean word for “strike vigorously,” this non-verbal performance is known as
“Cookin” abroad. Students may join in the rigorous drumbeat of the performance and
experience traditional and contemporary Korea on one stage. You will be amazed at how
much you will understand and relate to it!
B-Boy Korea
De-Militarized Zone(DMZ)
Often labeled as the “Most Fortified Border in the World,” the DMZ stands as one of Korea’s most
popular tourist attractions. It was negotiated and designated after the Korean War(June 25,
1950), 2km away from the truce line on each side of the border. One of the last relics of
the Cold War, the DMZ is where tension and peace coincide. Within the area, you’ll be
able to enter the famous 3rd Infiltration Tunnel, which had been secretly designed and
built by North Korea to make a surprise attack on Seoul should the need ever arise.
The Korean B-Boy (meaning ‘break-boy’) has recently created a phenomenal
sensation around the world by sweeping first place in several world B-Boy
competitions. The ‘B-Boy Korea’ performance is a unique fusion of the
modern B-Boy dance and Korean percussion beats, mixed with
comedy and passion, creating a spectacular theatrical performance
that you have never experienced before.
World Ceramic Biennale
Students are invited to see, feel, touch, and enjoy Korean ceramics in Korea’s most
famous pottery-making site, Icheon. The program is intended to explore the beauty of
ceramic art through hands-on experience. Students participate in a pottery-making competition
and hand imprinting in ceramics, various festival events as well as symposiums.
