UNIVERSITYOFTHEPHILIPPINES OFFICEOFADMISSIONS 1101 Diliman, Quezon City ACADEMIC YEAR 2001-2002 UNIVERSITYOFTHEPHILIPPINES The University of the Philippines is a center of the arts and sciences, the professions and health sciences, agriculture and forestry, fisheries and aquaculture. It has about 3,447 faculty and about 56,659 students in nine campuses all over the country. It has six constituent universities and one autonomous college namely, UP Diliman, UP Los Baños, UP Manila, UP Visayas, UP Mindanao, UP Open University and UP College Baguio. Altogether the University has 54 colleges offering 520 degree programs. As the premier State University, U.P. offers a wide range of degree programs, conducts basic and applied research, and performs many public service functions. Aspiring for academic excellence, it maintains a high standard of education. For this reason and on account of its limited resources, U.P. has found it necessary to set quotas (i.e., upper limits on freshman admission) for each campus and for some degree programs (referred to as "quota programs"). "Non-quota programs" impose no upper limits. Some degree programs are offered in just one campus while others are offered in two or more campuses. GENERALREQUIREMENTS Graduates of foreign high schools and Philippine high schools accredited by the Department of Education, Culture and Sports may be admitted as freshmen into the University based on the following: 1) performance in the U.P. College Admission Test (UPCAT); and 2) weighted average of final grades obtained in high school. Graduates of high schools abroad may be admitted as beginning freshmen into non-quota programs without taking the UPCAT provided they meet other specific requirements. For further details, inquire at the Office of the University Registrar. WHAT IS THE UPCAT The University of the Philippines College Admission Test (UPCAT) is a four-hour examination consisting of subtests on language proficiency, reading comprehension, mathematics and science. The UPCAT is in English and Filipino. Applicants who take the UPCAT are ranked according to their University Predicted Grade (UPG). The UPG is the result of combining the applicant's weighted scores in the UPCAT subtests and the weighted average of his grades in high school. The UPG is a measure of the applicant's potential to do well in college at the University of the Philippines. WARNING: All UPCAT applicants and their parents are warned that U.P. has not authorized and will not authorize any individual, group or entity, public or private, to conduct UPCAT review sessions. SPECIFICREQUIREMENTS Eligible to take the UPCAT are : 1) Students of DECS-accredited high schools who have not taken the UPCAT previously and are high school seniors (i.e.,Fourth Year/Grade 12/ Senior 6) expecting to graduate at the end of the school year; or high school graduates who have not taken and/or are not taking any college subject; 2) Those declared eligible for admission to college after taking the Philippine Educational Placement Test (PEPT). In both 1 and 2 above, the applicants must have final grades corresponding to the First, Second and Third Year of the 4-year secondary school curriculum in DECS-accredited high schools (or, Grades 9, 10 and 11 -- or, their equivalent -- for international/foreign and similar schools). All UPCAT applicants must submit the following requirements : 1) Official copy of Form 137 or consolidated transcript of records with high school grades as specified above; 2) Correctly and completely accomplished forms (U.P. Form Nos. 1 and 2); 3) Four 2"x2" identical recent photographs; and 4) A non-refundable application fee : - P350 for Filipinos with annual gross family income of more than P 80,000; or - P1000 for resident foreign applicants; or - $50 for non-resident foreign applicants; or - $100 for applicants who will take the UPCAT abroad. Exempted from payment of the application fee are Filipino applicants belonging to any of the following groups : 1) Those whose annual gross family income is P80,000 or less; 2) The top ten graduates or prospective graduates of public high schools. IMPORTANT REMINDERS : There is no minimum high school grade requirement for taking the UPCAT.
