In your Answer Document provide two details that show why the undersea
expeditions mentioned in the selection are important. (2 points)
Scoring Guidelines
Points

Student Response
Response includes two of the following details about the use of Alvin in
underwater expeditions:
1. Scientists found deep hydrothermal vents in the Galapagos Rift.
2. Scientists discovered temperatures could reach 400 degrees Celsius.
3. Scientists discovered that hydrothermal vent fluid contains minerals
and chemicals./Have discovered that the minerals/chemicals support
life./They discovered minerals and chemicals.
4. The expeditions discovered microbes, tubeworms, crabs and clams.
5. Scientists have collected worms and sponges.
6. Chemists have gathered rocks.
7. Oceanographers have mapped the sea floor and taken water
samples.
8. Geologists have studied underwater volcanoes./Look at ocean ridges
to understand how the planet's surface has changed over time.

NOTE: General statements about the benefits of deep-sea exploration
(e.g., to understand sea life, to explore the ocean) will not be awarded
credit.
Response includes one of the correct details listed above with a missing
or incorrect detail.
Response does not contain any of the correct details listed above, is
incomplete, irrelevant or blank.

The following summary of the passage contains three errors. In your Answer
Document identify two of the errors and explain how you would correct each
one.(2 points)
Much of the world’s oceans remain unexplored, and scientists at the WHOI are
building a new underwater vehicle that will allow them to study the Challenger
Deep, which is the deepest point of the ocean. Alvin, the current underwater
vehicle, has helped scientists make amazing underwater discoveries. But despite
its many years of service, Alvin needs to be replaced because it can no longer
keep up with the changing underwater ecosystems. The new underwater vehicle
will allow for larger teams of scientists to descend to the ocean floor in one dive.
Scoring Guidelines
Points
Student Response
4 point
Response includes two of the following errors with corrections:
• Error #1: Scientists at the WHOI are building a new underwater vehicle
that will allow them to study the Challenger Deep, which is the deepest
point of the ocean.
• Correction #1: Scientists at the WHOI are building an underwater
vehicle that will allow them to explore as deep as 6,500 meters below
sea level. OR Scientists at the WHOI are building an underwater vehicle
that will allow them to study most of the underwater world except the
deepest point, the Challenger Deep.
• Error #2: ... Alvin needs to be replaced because it can no longer keep up
with the changing underwater ecosystems.
• Correction #2: Alvin needs to be replaced because it cannot withstand
the pressure of ocean depths greater than 4,400 meters. /Because the
new sub can go deeper/go faster/is stronger/is technologically superior.
• Error #3: The new underwater vehicle will allow for larger teams of
scientists to descend to the ocean floor in one dive.
• Correction #3: The new underwater vehicle will allow for the same
number of scientists/crew (pilot and two passengers) to descend to the
ocean floor in one dive.
NOTE: Responses that embed the error in the correction will be awarded
credit for both.
3 point
Response includes two of the errors listed above, one with a correction and
one with a missing or incorrect correction.
NOTE: No point will be awarded for a correction if the identification of the
error upon which it is based is incorrect or missing.
2 point
Response includes one of the errors listed above, with one correction.
OR
Response includes two of the errors listed above with two missing or
incorrect corrections.
1 point
Response includes one of the errors listed above, with one missing or
incorrect identification of an error and two missing or incorrect corrections.
0 point
Response does not identify any of the errors listed above, is incomplete,
irrelevant or blank.
