Bronzeville D iscovery Guide for
Teachers
This Discovery Guide is designed to enrich the theatre experience during and after the play
Bronzeville. Historical information is provided to help students put the events of the play in
the context of the early 1940s. A variety of activities are provided to help students see the
relevance in those events in their lives today. These learning activities are designed to help
students:
Understand the historical events that impacted the lives of the
characters in the play.
Explore how stereotypes and attitudes about ethnic groups influence
how members of these groups are treated.
Understand the values that motivated the actions and choices of the
characters in the play and compare and contrast these values with the
students’ own personal values.
Explore the differences and similarities of life in 1940s America and
today.
The suggested learning activities in the Discovery Guide should not require supplementary
instructions in order to use them in the classroom. These activities are suggestions only. We
encourage you to make any modifications that you think will spark excitement in the
learning process among your students. For example, you may want to present discussion
questions as writing activities or you may want to modify some activities to make them
more suitable for the age groups you are teaching.
At the end of the Discovery Guide for Teachers are links to more resources for learning
activities and lesson plans. There is also a short questionnaire asking for your feedback.
Your feedback will help us update and prepare future Discovery Guides so they will meet the
needs of you and your students.
