Role-playing Case Analysis The overall aim of role-playing assignments is for students to get involved in a much more direct and practical way than is the case with classic face-to-face teaching. Students will be asked to form eight groups. In each role playing case analysis session, the class will be separated into three main groups: management team, board of directors (BOD), and shareholders similar to real life annual business meeting. That is, one team will be asked to play a role of management team, another team will play a role of BOD team, while the rest of the class play the role of shareholder (Please refer to tentative outline for the schedule of role playing case analysis). These three groups must be prepared before the meeting begins according to the roles they have to perform in each session. Basically, everyone must read the designated cases beforehand. Role Definition A management team is responsible to the growth of the organization’s earnings. They have to identify problems, create choices and provide alternative course of actions. Management team must submit case analysis report prior to the annual meeting. Format of case analysis report is provided in class. Apart from written report, management team has to prepare for 25-minute oral presentation. Only key important issues should be included in the presentation. Board of director team must submit report before class. The content of its report will include only problems, alternatives, and recommendations (numbers 2, 3, and 4 in case analysis format). After the end of management team’s case analysis presentation, board of director team should ask management team questions according to its presentation. Shareholders are the rest of the class. They do not have to submit any report; however, they will have 10 minutes to ask management team questions about its case analysis. Before asking question, please inform instructor your name and ID. Questions must be creative and relevant to the case. Evaluation Criteria Element As Management Team As Board of Directors As Shareholders and Participation in Classroom Weighting 15% 10% 5% 2. Assignments Each student has to complete both take home and in-class assignments pertaining to the specific course materials. These assignments include case studies, role plays, answer to questions, etc. 3. Group Project and Presentation 3 Each group of students will act as a consulting team of a designated company. A case study of a real world company will be provided to each team on week 4. Students have to find additional background information from various sources including libraries, internet sites, books, magazines, and newspapers in order to conduct a professional case analysis The general flow and the format of the case analysis are similar to that of the role playing case analysis assignment with emphases on how a group can systematically apply strategic concepts and theories and provide effective recommendations. However, its scope of analysis will be larger and students should put more effort to come up with the best solution for client firms. Student teams may be required to present their case analysis in MUIC internal case competition where they have to compete with the teams in other sections.
