Chairman/CEO’s Message

Pictured L-R: Mariah Carey; David Renzer, Chairman & CEO, UMPG
As we approach the end of 2006 and the beginning of 2007, it has certainly been a momentous and historic year for Universal Music
Publishing Group. Even as we anticipate the final approval process on
our acquisition of BMG Music Publishing, UMPG and our global staff
have been focused on continuing to sign some of the biggest names
in our industry, including Elton John, Bernie Taupin, Carol Bayer
Sager, and Juanes. We have also continued our strong chart performance globally in addition to winning many significant awards, such
as: ASCAP’s Country Music Awards Songwriter of the Year with Rivers
Rutherford, ASCAP’s Rhythm & Soul Songwriter of the Year with 50
Cent, BMI Songwriter of the Year with Mariah Carey, Best International
Breakthrough Artist and Best British Group at the Brits (Jack Johnson
and Kaiser Chiefs), GRAMMY Song of the Year and Album of the Year
with U2, inductions into the UK Hall of Fame for Prince and Bon Jovi,
as well as Oscar and Golden Globe wins for Gustavo Santaolalla, and
many more.
2007 will also be a historic year for our industry as we have a pending copyright royalty process in Washington, D.C. following on the
heels of the tribunal process in the UK. Along with the continued
growth of our digital business, the pending resolution of rates for such
areas as subscription, digital downloads and streams as well as the
physical rate for CD’s in the U.S. in addition to our industry setting
rates for video online, etc. will all have major implications for the
future of our industry.
20
I want to take this opportunity to thank our global staff for their continued strong efforts in delivering record breaking results for UMPG
and continuing their hard work as we face the exciting challenges
ahead of us in 2007.

The Evolution Begins
Three years into her music career, Ciara has already established herself as R&B hottest triple threat: singer, songwriter, and entertainer.
Ciara burst onto the scene in 2004 with the never-gonna-get-it single "Goodies” and the debut album of the same name from
Sho’Nuff/LaFace/Zomba Label Group and quickly went to No. 1 on
the chart. Riding the
multi-platinum wave
with three No. 1 singles, Ciara’s 2.7 million plus records
launched her into a
world of music,
movies and more.
The scene-stealing
songstress has been UMPG’s Chamillionaire and Ciara on the set of the video “Get up.”
recognized throughout the year with over 30 notable nominations and awards
including MTV Video Awards, VIBE Awards, Billboard Awards,
Teen Choice Awards, Soul Train Awards, Lady of Soul Awards,
World Music Awards and as the most nominated artist at
the BET Awards. Additionally, Ciara’s surmounting recognition has secured her performances at top music
events, which include the Much Music Awards, BET
Awards, VH1 Hip Hop Honors, Billboard Awards.
Having a successful first record under her belt, Ciara
co-wrote and co-produced every track on her highly
anticipated second album appropriately titled Ciara:
The Evolution.
“I want you to be able to go back to the old days and put
your hands up and feel good.” Ciara did so this time by
working with UMPG producer Polow and UMPG writers 50
Cent and Chamillionaire. Polow, who recently worked on
Fergie’s “London Bridge” and Pussycat Dolls “Buttons” produced the first single off Evolution, “Promise” garnering national radio attention. The new single “Get Up, Parts 1 and 2” which
features a guest appearance from Chamillionaire, is on the
soundtrack to the motion picture Step Up.

MONEY MAKER
Ludacris, the multi-platinum “visionary businessman,” as
Island Def Jam Chairman LA Reid attributes him, believes true
success is to have balance between opposing conflicts of life.
Within that balance is the source of inspiration for Chris
“Ludacris” Bridges’ fifth studio album, Release Therapy, which
debuted at No.1 on Billboard’s 200 and Top R&B Chart. Release
versus Therapy, success versus tribulations; balance between
the two is the foundation of Ludacris’ new project.
S
CLIVE DAVIS, STEVIE WONDER,
r
Bridges is dealing with a wide range of topics on Release
Therapy, from the huge debut single “Money Maker” with
Pharrell Williams, (#1 and fastest growing single on the Hot
100 with an audience reachng over 125 Million), to themes of
abuse and escape in “Runaway Love” (featuring Mary J. Blige).
Bridges is striving to achieve something beyond rappers of his
time, “People can either love me or hate me, but they’ll always
respect me,” said Ludacris referring to his recently broadened
career to motion picture. By acquiring a SAG Award, an NAACP
Image Award nomination for his performance in Oscar winning
motion picture “Crash,” Oscar nominated film “Husle & Flow,”
a role in an upcoming feature film starring opposite Vince
Vaughn and Paul Giammatti (“Fred Claus”) in addition to being
founder of the Ludacris Foundation, the rapper has also
acquired what he has yearned for since the commencement of
his career; to be considered not only a “vital member of the
Island Def Jam Family” (Shawn Carter, Pres. and CEO of Def
Jam Recordings), but also a well-respected, well-rounded
artist clearly making a strong impact in popular culture.

UMPG signs The Red Jumpsuit Apparatus
to an exclusive, worldwide co-publishing deal
On The Red Jumpsuit Apparatus’ debut entitled Don’t You Fake It, the band tap
into elements of pop-punk, pop, screamo, and metal, combining them in a way
that’s surprising. The current single “Face Down” is featured on Sony
Playstation ATV 4 and Madden NFL ’07.
Winter and Kitchens formed The Red Jumpsuit Apparatus in 2003 just for kicks.
For 18 months they wrote and rehearsed with no real intention of playing shows
or recording an album. When some friends suggested they play out, The Red Jumpsuit Apparatus started booking gigs and were
immediately embraced by the local scene. “We played this place called The Art Bar twice, and the second time we played it, we
sold it out,” Winter says.
Their fan base continued to build to an almost unheard-of level for a local band. Winter then added drummer Jon Wilkes and
Elias brought in his childhood friend and former band mate Joey Westwood. Following a flurry of industry attention, the band
signed with Virgin Records.
The album Don’t You Fake It is available now in the U.S., Canada, and Australia with a Japan release slated for February 2007.

Elton John
Elton John began life as Reginald Dwight. By the late 60’s after a decade’s
apprenticeship playing clubs and pubs he had become Elton John and
hooked up with lyricist Bernie Taupin. On the back of the instant classic
“Your Song” and the career making showcase shows at LA’s Troubadour
club, his second album, titled simply Elton John became a hit on both sides
of the Atlantic.
A series of landmark albums quickly followed, four alone in 1971. By 1972,
with his first US number one album Honky Chateau, containing such hits as
“Rocket Man” and “Honky Cat,” Elton had become a bonafide superstar. The
next six consecutive albums topped the US charts, a string bettered only by
The Beatles. The following year “Crocodile Rock” became his first US number
one single. This period marked the critical and commercial peak of Elton’s
career. The rightly famous double record Goodbye Yellow Brick Road was
released in 1973 and possibly his masterwork Captain Fantastic and the Dirt
Brown Cowboy in 1975. The later, incidentally, was the first album ever to debut
at number one in the States.
The early 80’s found Elton reunited with Bernie Taupin, enjoying a string of smash
hit singles such as “I’m Still Standing” and “I Guess That’s Why They Call It The
Blues.” In 1994 Elton was inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame. In 1997 following the tragic death of Princess Diana the tribute to her, the re-recorded
“Candle in the Wind,” became the biggest selling record of all time.
The new decade finds the newly knighted Sir Elton
John still working with Bernie Taupin, and
still releasing some of his most critically acclaimed records, including
2006’s The Captain & The Kid.
Elton John, an extraordinary
career still very much a work
in progress.

+ BREAK-OUT
NORTH AMERICA
PRODUCERS: POLOW & CANDICE NELSON
RISING STAR: POLOW
UMPG hit-maker Polow was recently featured on the cover of Billboard
magazine. Excerpt from article:
Producers normally slave over the boards to create a signature sound - think
the Neptunes' "zing" or Kanye West's nostalgic soul samples. But up-andcoming producer Polow Da Don does the complete opposite. And while aiming for a sonically diverse catalog, the in-demand rapper-cum-producer has
earned four top 10 hits in the past two years, including Fergie's recent
Billboard Hot 100 chart-topper, "London Bridge."
"If I do a beat that sounds like another beat I did, I'll scratch it immediately,"
says the 27-year-old Atlantan, born Polow-Freache Jones (his first name is of
French descent). "I've had a legitimate R&B hit, a legitimate rap/pop record and
a legitimate pop record, and they all sound totally different."
Polow signed to Universal Music Publishing Group in November 2004 in a deal
brokered by his childhood friend Ethiopia Habtemariam, VP Urban Creative
Affairs. "For a lot of his tracks, he'll have hook or melody ideas already because
he hears where he wants it to go. I know a couple of writers that are actually intimidated by his tracks," says Habtemariam, who is also responsible for bringing
Ciara, Chris Brown and Ludacris to UMPG. "I don't think he'll ever admit this—he totally believes in himself—but when he steps into
the studio he's insecure about it so he does everything he can to make sure a record is perfect. Up until the last stage of mixing and
matching the record, he's making changes to the track to make it that much bigger."
Make Room for
Candice Nelson
Specializing in melody, lyrics and production, songwriter and producer Candice Nelson is currently working on projects with Ciara, Fantastia Barrino, Katherine McPhee, Timbaland, Kevin
Michael, Keke Palmer and Tiffany Evans. Nelson is also a part of the hit-making team The Clutch,
consisting of fellow UMPG writer/producers Keri Hilson and Balewa Muhammad as well as J. Que,
Ezekiel Lewis. This fearsome five-some putting out the heat are collectively responsible for the
songs “Take Me As I Am” by Mary J. Blige, “She Don’t” by LeToya Luckett, “Young Love” by Chris
Brown, “4 Minutes” by Avant, and “Red Light” by Usher. They’ve also knocked out recent hits for
Danity Kane, Ludacris, the Pussycat Dolls, Omarion and Beyonce. Nelson’s catalogue consists of
Alicia Keys “Heartburn,” Jennifer Lopez “He’ll Be Back,” 7 cuts on Brandy’s Afrodisiac, Dave
Hollister “Don’t Take My Girl Away,” Yolanda Adams “He Will Arrive,” Mary J. Blige “Take Me As I
Am,” Jagged Edge “Stunnas,” Beyonce “Resentment,” and LeToya Lucket “She Don’t.”
Industry Mourns Passing Of Gerald Levert

As 2006 comes to a close we celebrate another year of tremendous growth in the area of synchronization. Many of UMPG’s
talented songwriters continue to be involved in composing music on assignment for feature films at the major studios.
Prince delivered a fantastic end title song for Warner Brothers smash hit “Happy Feet.” The Bloodhound Gang have completed a song for 20th Century Fox’s “The Simpson’s Movie.” Anthony Hamilton is writing and performing in Universal’s
upcoming Ridley Scott feature “American Gangster.” John King of the Dust Brothers completed several songs for New Line
Cinema’s “Tenacious D: The Pick of Destiny.” Common is composing for “Freedom Writers” a 2007 Paramount release. Glen
Ballard has co-wrote a song with Dave Stewart for “Charlotte’s Web,” also for Paramount. These projects and many others
on the horizon in 2007 will ensure that UMPG’s talented composer’s songs will be heard on the big screen throughout the
coming year.

ELECTRONIC MUSIC IN THE MAINSTREAM
By Guest Columnist: Joanna Puglisi, Associate Director, Film & TV
Electronic music is an extremely versatile genre, excellent for synchronization
because of its ability to emote such a vast range of moods. From ominous, brooding and aggressive to ethereal, fun and romantic. Electronic music continues to be
absorbed into the mainstream by way of synch use in film and TV. Most current pop,
rock and hip-hop tracks incorporate electronic elements such as drum machines,
loops, samples and scratches.
Though the genre is commonly associated with dance music, the growing numbers
of sub-genres within it are actually designed more for listening rather than dancing.
The listening side is similar to traditional film score in that it conveys emotions and
sets the tone of a scene without the use of lyrics. The many layers of sonic textures
and grooves create lush soundscapes.
Sub-genres:
Downtempo: Its calming grooves usually contain the loungey, rhythmic influences
of jazz and the lush strings of an orchestra. UMPG artists in this style include Zero
7, Royksopp and King Kooba. DJ Shadow is a great example of a downtempo artist
that is constantly blurring the lines between genres by mixing in hip-hop, rock and
turntablism.

Big beat: The most popular form to crossover into the synch world is big beat, which
has vocals and are generally up-tempo. UMPG writers like Fatboy Slim and the
Chemical Brothers are practitioners of this style.
ACURA
House music: This sub-genre has been brought into the mainstream by such artists
as UMPG’s Basement Jaxx, who employ many of the rhythmic and vocal elements
made popular during the seventies soul, funk, and disco era.
“DREAMER”
(HODGSON/DAVIES)
SUPERTRAMP
Advertisers are getting more adventurous and attempting to gain street credibility
by tapping into underground electronic cultures. Film trailers and TV promos are
constantly requesting dark and aggressive tracks for action packed spots and fun,
big beat type tracks for comedies and other more light-hearted programs. Crime
scene oriented TV shows gravitate towards the more obscure, glitchy side of downtempo songs, which are chosen for their ability to build tension and create movement.
Electronic music will continue to be a major influence, while still maintaining its
underground roots at the hands of aspiring producers and artists who continue to
push the boundaries of creating music with machines.

wolfmother own the night at ARIA
Universal Music Publishing Australia has capped off another hugely
successful year with its domestic roster taking home wins for Best
Group, Best Rock Album and Breakthrough Artist and scoring an
amazing 14 nominations for the 2006 ARIA Awards held at Acer
Arena. Testament to UMPA’s aggressive and holistic approach to A&R,
the nominations span the gamut of genres including rock, country,
bluegrass and dance.
There is no doubting the fact that
Sydney based three-piece
Wolfmother is the international
Australian music success story
of 2006. The night belonged to
the howling rockers whose selftitled
debut
album
for
Modular/Universal helped the
band to wins in the best group, rock album and breakthrough artist
categories and gathered a healthy swag of nominations for this
year’s ARIA’s. In a rare local television appearance, the band injected
their own brand of fuzzed-out, vintage rock into proceedings which
sent their already triple platinum debut album further into the commercial stratosphere.
Also leading the charge with an exceptional 6 nominations was the
PAUL KELLY WINS ARIA FINE ARTS AWARD
Unquestionably one of Australia’s finest ever singersongwriters, Paul Kelly, has added another gong to his
already overflowing trophy cabinet after his soundtrack
for the successful Australian film, Jindabyne won the
award for ‘Best Original Soundtrack Album’ at the prestigious ARIA Fine Arts Awards.
After amassing one of the finest back-catalogues in Australian music
history, Paul Kelly set himself the daunting task of performing 100 of
his most popular recorded works in alphabetical order over four
nights in three Australian cities. Accompanied by just a guitar and
piano, Paul Kelly showcased his stellar collection of songs in a truly
unique manner.
undeniable and always brilliant
punk-rock powerhouse The Living
End, scoring nominations in the
highly-prized ‘Best Group’ and
‘Best Rock Album’ categories. The
band’s fourth album, State of
Emergency also earned nominations for ‘Best Cover Art,’ ‘Engineer
of the Year’ and ‘Producer of the Year’ while the top five Australian
single ‘Wake Up’ was also short-listed for ‘Best Video.’
Rounding out the domestic UMPA contingent were nominations for
three of the country’s brightest and most enduring stars, Paul Kelly,
Paulmac and Adam Brand. Paul Kelly for ‘Best Original Soundtrack
Album’ for his work on the Jindabyne soundtrack, Paulmac for ‘Best
Dance Release’ for Panic Room and Adam Brand for ‘Best Country
Album’ for What a Life.
However, UMPA’s influence on the night’s events were not strictly
limited to its own domestic signings with controlling shares of
Australian Idol Winner Kate DeAraugo’s ‘Maybe Tonight’- nominated
for ‘Highest Selling Single’ as well as key tracks on multi-nominated
releases The Veronica’s Secret Life Of and the Rogue Traders debut
album Here Come The Drums.
UMPA SCORE TOP THREE ALBUMS
It is not often that a publisher can lay claim to boasting the top three
albums on their local charts, so when it happens two weeks in a row
in two of the biggest sales weeks of the year, we just had to mention it!
All phenomenal artists and all signed to UMP, Evanescence, The
Killers and Jet respectively filled out the top three positions of the
domestic chart with their stellar follow-up albums.
After amassing cumulative local sales in excess of
one million units with their debut albums, coming
into the festive season this triumvirate of rock will
undoubtedly represent a significant retail force.
JET
JET HIT PLATINUM
AND LAND AT NUMBER THREE
After conquering the world with their 3 million selling debut album Get Born, Jet has
returned to the fray with their career-defining epic follow-up album Shine On.
After amassing unheard of sales of 8 times platinum for Get Born and in the process
achieving the record for the most domestically successful debut album for an Australian
rock band in history, Shine On has not only raised the bar but hit expectations out of the
ball park.
24 • UMPG
Echoing similarly impressive chart debuts around the globe, Shine On has landed at
number three on the domestic chart whilst also notching up platinum status for sales
of 70,000 units after just one week. With the band returning to home shores for the
always massive annual Big Day Out festival in January, it appears inevitable that Shine
On will be the soundtrack to the Australian summer.
