Reviewing Vocabulary
Chromatin  An uncondensed structure in the nucleus that contains DNA wrapped around
associated proteins (histones).
Chromosome  A compact structure that carries information for gene. Consists of DNA and
associated proteins (histones).
Homologues Chromosome  Chromosome pairs of the same length, centromere position, and
staining pattern that possess genes for the same characters at corresponding loci. One
homologous chromosome is inherited from the organism's father, the other from the mother.
Sister Chromatid  Replicated form of DNA chromosome joined at the centromere.
Centromere  The centralized region joining two sister chromatids
Kinetochore  An area on the centromere that attaches to the spindle fibers
Centrosome  Also called microtubule organizing center, an organelle in the cytoplasm that
produces spindle fibers for cell division
Centriole  Consists of 9 sets of microtubule triplets. 2 centrioles are found in every
centrosome.
Chiasma  An X shaped region of sister chromatids where crossing over has occurred
